I'm guessing Michael was estranged from his family for quite some time - it's probably been years since Michael even had contact his father.

Yes many people have had parents who are abusive who are not fucked up. However, there are way more people who have had abusive parents who ARE fucked up. Not to mention, they did not grow up with the world following them and judging them since they were a child. I think it was the perfect combo of an evil father, a very sensitive human being and a life so grand that he was unable to develop properly into an adult. Staying child-like allowed him to escape the complicated life he faced. Now, I do not think we are enabling him, we are showing compassion. There is nothing any of us could to to change his destructive path in either direction. Trust me, if he was a friend on mine, I would have been shaking him trying to make him change. Also, the Jacksons were talented, they were the stars, a much more nurturing parent who had the same ambitions would have gotten the same results. My mother, while not abusive, is completely passive-aggressive, has a martyr complex, likes to guilt people and passed her neurotic tendencies and fear of everything right on to me yet she wonders why I am the way I am. If you try to tell her this, she flies off the handle and gets completely unreasonable. She's like a child.

All we can do is try to rework things and move forward, but it does leave a lasting impression on one's life and sometimes people are too weak to get completely into a good place in their lives.

It's like military brainwashing. I lived with my parents for many years and had to listen to my mother and father preach and judge and instill fear in me to the point where I thought it was normal and natural. It took people at my first job to look at me like I was a loony because I was AFRAID to make left hand turns!!

I'm trying to take back control in the relationship, but it isn't easy. So I can see why MJ fell prey to his father's controlling, abusive ways. Sometimes people just aren't strong enough to deal with it.
