She was found guilty, but the conviction is in her married name, which she hasn't used in over 30 years. That's the best her family connections could do for her, in this situation.
This is a pretty crooked town, one where you can get screwed royally for fucking with the wrong people, and get away with a lot if you work connections such as the ones she has.
She's always been a recluse though. Not exactly a social butterfly, by any definition of the term :)

I have a neighbor who did something very similar! Her grandfather was a senator, her father and brother are prominent attorneys, and her first cousin is a staff writer for The New Yorker, as well as a regular guest on all of the news talk shows, both PBS and cable.
She and her partner also believe that they are voodoo doctors, and try to harrass people with that nonsense. He is now in a nursing home, and she is battling lung cancer, so their voodoo didn't work out so well for them, after all.
