From Chastity To Chaz
Chastity Bono's rep confirmed to TMZ that she's in the process of becoming of a he. For those of you that had too many 'tinis at lunch, let me put it bluntly: Chastity's replacing her vag with a peen. We're all clear now.
40-year-old Chastity starting making the change earlier this year. He's just in the early stages.
My first question was what would Chastity change his name to? I was thinking Chace, Chad or maybe something completely different like Rex. Personally, if I was him I'd go by Tity. Well, I would've made people call me Tity a long time ago.
Anyway, Chastity is now Chaz. I wouldn't have thought of that! It sounds like the name of keyboard player in an 80s new wave band. Or the name of the asshole jock with chunky blonde highlights in a John Hughes movie. I like.
Here's the full statement from Chaz's rep:
"Yes, it's true -- Chaz, after many years of consideration, has made the courageous decision to honor his true identity. He is proud of his decision and grateful for the support and respect that has already been shown by his loved ones. It is Chaz's hope that his choice to transition will open the hearts and minds of the public regarding this issue, just as his 'coming out' did nearly 20 years ago. We ask that the media respect Chaz's privacy during this long process as he will not be doing any interviews at this time."
What would Cher think? Seriously, I'm totally curious as to what Cher has to say about this. Wasn't she kind of weird about Chaz becoming a gayelle? I'm sure she has known about this for a while, but I bet her face fell on the floor when Chaz first told her. Then the dog nibbled at it and they both had a big laugh.
And when you get a peen installed, do you get to choose the size? Because that's a big deal. My advice to Chaz is not to get too carried away by getting an enormous one. Yeah, extra huge wangs look pretty, but they don't always get the job done. Nothing is worse than a big limp dick that keeps poppin'out. Actually, a small limp dick is worse. Oh hell, go big! You only become a man once!

Yeah, it seems strange at first... Though, I would say that "transgendered" doesn't necessarily mean gay. It means they feel like they were born in the wrong body. So, in the case you gave as an example, the man feels like he should have been born a woman (identifies as a woman, wants to dress like a woman, live as a woman, etc.) - even though he might be a "straight" man, since he's attracted to females... So, if he gets a sex change, SHE now feels like she's finally in the right body, though her sexual orientation is still the same (she likes women).

Before sex reassignment therapy, Ts do go through a battery of examinations and evaluations to determine if they are mentally fit enough for the procedure. Then when its determined that they are, in fact, gender dysphoric, and that the change will be the best option for their overall well-being, then they proceed. All of my friends who have done this have said it is quite the process. They have to do both, so to borrow your parlance, they have to "fix" the mind AND the body. One can't be done without the other.
What im saying is that if you are genetically female but identify as a male then the mind is at fault, not the body. (this obviously excludes situations where a person is xxx, xxy or yy etc). surely its better to fix the mind then do a half assed job on the body. Dont get me wrong, i fully understand and sympathise with transsexuals, but i think they go about it backwards.

are you suggesting that through counseling, transgenderism can be cured? A lot of it has to do with the body in the first place, feeling confined in a body that feels foreign, and that's why they undergo the treatments to radically reconstruct their bodies?

An acquaintance of mine once said to me,'one has to wonder where the fault lies'. In this case he meant that if Chaz is XX genetically, then the mind is at fault, not the body.
Transsexualism is not like homosexuality. In homosexuality given no external influence there is no reason to not be happy with yourself, but a transsexual will not be happy even with no external pressure. Its unfortunate that the only solution for most is surgery or hormones, rather than counselling.
I hope Chaz finds more happiness as a man, because it takes balls (pun intended) to make the huge transition from woman to man.
I live in Germany, which has more sex-assignment operations than anywhere else in the western world I believe, and so I have seen more than my fair share of transgenders. MTF and FTM. Some of them have the works done, and some have pieces to go. And yes, some of them you would never know they went under a knife, so it is all case by case.
And as with any situation, there is no time frame for one to realize they want to do this. There are many people that get it done even later in life. Chastity is lucky in that she can get some of the best care money can afford. Most people in her position do not have this choice.
Having Cher as a mom is definitely a plus!

there isn't a whole lot of education STILL about this, but gender dysphoria/transgenderism is definitely worth discussing. Most people understand, or are at least acquainted with the idea of MTFs, because it's more prevalent, but FTMs have a hard way to go. My education, which is still very much evolving, comes from being acquainted for years with several folks who have transitioned, or are still in the process of doing so. It helps to have a community that supports and understands, but even still in the queer community itself, trans folks are somewhat marginalized because there isn't that discussion. Mainstream culture is trying, I guess, but ignorance is pervasive; I'm in the minority who believes Pregnant Dude going public in the name of discourse was a good thing, but still he was met with shame, intolerance, disgust, and confusion.
Thank God Chastity has Cher for a mom. If anyone could handle being Chastity's mom and give her the love and guidance and acceptance she needs, it's Cher.
I saw Chasity Bono at Disney World when I was a wee kid. Her mom had her in a light blue dress and her hair was long and blonde. She looked really sweet. I think she still probably is, but she doesn't look anything like the princess-y little girl she was.

I hate to be the person that takes our fair moderator to task, but just because Chastity/Chaz is transitioning from female to male as a transgendered person does not mean that he's electing to have the penile implant. In fact, most FTMs I know (and in the general population) do NOT have that surgery, because of the incident rate of failure. It will never quite function as a biologically available penis, and its an expensive and not widely tested procedure. PROBABLY what will happen with Bono is starting "T (testosterone) therapy", a hysterectomy (some FTMs don't opt for this) and a radical masectomy to remove the breasts. Outwardly, once the hormones start kicking in, Chaz will appear male, but will still, like "Pregnant Dude" retain the genital structure of a woman (a vag). It saddens me that technology to help FTMs FULLY transition (that is, having the penile construction) has not caught up to that for helping MTFs. It's unfair, really. As they say, its easier to dig a hole than to build a pole.
Ok, Chazz can do anything she likes. After surviving a childhood with Cher with most of her wits about her, she's to be admired.
But does this mean he is not, and has never been a Lesbian? Does this mean she has been a straight man all along, just in the wrong body? I am confused, but perfectly willing to learn.

Can you imagine how miserable a person must be in their body for them to be willing to go through the emotional, physical and financial trauma of sex reassignment surgery? I can't even begin to imagine what hell that is. It's hard for anyone to do, but it must be that much more difficult to do it while in the public eye. She is very brave. Now, see. This I have no problem with. Transgendered and genderfuck folks are just as entitled to be as happy as the rest of us. Personally, the idea of cutting my dick off gives me a panic attack, but whatever. I'm proud of Chaz for coming out . . . especially in the wake of this "pregnant man" bullshit.
If someone honestly feels this is the correct path to take then that person should do it and we should support them. Life is too short to feel that your body is completely wrong. I'm also glad that Chaz is going public because trans people get a bad rep thanks to fuckers like "pregnant man".

Haha, thank you. I grew up close to the military base where Barry Winchell was killed. I was 18 when that shit went down and I'd actually seen Calpernia Addams perform and actually talked to her after her shows. She was awesome. Awesome. To this day, I would not say one bad word about her because she was patient, kind, sweet, just awesome. That tragedy gave me, and a lot of other people I know, the courage to actually be who we were. So I owe a lot of my strength to Calpernia.
I have a deep appreciation for what transpeople go through. I also love genderqueers. And, hell, even I've worn guyliner and glitter. Genderfucks are always a blast and we all deserve to be treated with respect.
But when you have someone who stands up and says, 'yo, I'm a dude, treat me like a dude, I'm getting married because I made the state recognize me as a dude, I'm a husband with a wife . . .' Ok, I will stand behind that person until my last breath. But to go through all that bullshit and then go, 'oh, hold up. I'm a dude and you will still treat me like a dude, but I'm gonna go over here, get knocked up and have a baby. Still a man, though.' Um, nooo. You're not.
