The Last Living Survivor Of The Titanic Has Passed Away

Millvina Dean, the youngest passenger on the Titanic and the last living survivor, died yesterday at a nursing home in Southampton, England. She was 97.

Millvina was just two-months old when she made it off the Titanic alive with her mother and brother. Her father went down with the ship, because he decided to stay behind to help rescue more passengers.

A couple of weeks after they were rescued, Millvina's family returned to England. Millvinia worked as a cartographer for the British government during World War II. In 1972, she retired from her job as in the purchasing department of a Southampton engineering firm.

Recently, Kate Winslet, Leonardo DiCaprio and James Cameron donated money to the Millvina Fund to help pay for her nursing home.

One of Millvina's friends said this about her, "She was a remarkable, sparkling lady. She knew her place in history and was always willing to share her story with others, especially children. She was the last living link to the story."

Rest in peace, Millvina.... Run into Leo's arms! He is waiting for you on the grand staircase. Your beautiful wig will go on....

Wow...Milvina's birthday was on February 2nd; so is mine. I was born in 1972--on her 60th birthday-the same year she retired. And my great-grandfather was also a Titanic survivor.

I love Secrets of the Dead and that episode in particular; I'm a Titanic Fanatic. I liked the movie but am interested in the real history as well. Some pub in the UK somewhere has the carved wooden stairway from the Titanic's sister ship the Olympic.

RIP Milvina. She had no memories of the sinking obviously but she heard things from her mother, who definitely did remember it, and she passed that on in interviews for other generations. She had a good long life and cheers to her.

RIP last survivor of the Titanic.
Not to be rude, but how does one share their Titanic experience if she was only 2 months old, it has to be 2nd hand stories from her ma.

Yes, Mo Sup:

This grand lady looked way prettier than all them plastic botox bitches, read Madonna, Kidman, Joan Rivers (pass the sick bag) and the rest of this lot. I've heard the recording of a radio interview with her made some months ago - a truely wonderful and sharp person.

RIP Millvina, eventhough she can't have had any memory of the Titanic she is and always will be "The last survivor".

LCT - I think it's because passed = moved on.

Moved on to the "after life"
-----------------------------

That makes a bit more sense.

When I die, if anyone says I 'passed on' I'm going to come back as a ghost and slap them. Or ghost-puke in their chili. This term almost makes it seem rude to say someone simply died.

How did 'passed away' become a term for death? It doesn't make any sense. They passed their life away? To who? Where?

Just a nice expression. A spirit passing away. Better than "Sorry but ya Ma Kicked the bucket, too bad, byeeeeeee"!

I understand technically she was a survivor, but uh, 2 months old, no memory, yea, whatever, bless her little old lady self, I guess.

DAE, then she must have been "dying" last week, b/c I swear I read something about DeCaprio and Winslet visiting her......
*************
I think they were helping her pay for her assisted living because her benefits ran out - or something like that.

In her later years, she had a "male companion" ten years her junior.

lol. The elderly couple with their arms wrapped around each other is usually what triggers a tear or two. The cynical cold-hearted Dlisted part of me can't help but chuckle a little when Rose pushes Ice-Cube Jack away.

@ DiamondDawg: Ha, I was thinking the same thing! But she made it!!

@Mother Superior: When you think about some of the "firsts" she's seen - first film with sound, first TV, etc. - it's nuts. Not to mention the wars and other historical events. Crazy! I want to get that old!

@greenfinch: I think she got a letter from the president, but I'm not sure if she actually received it - her daughter (my BF's grandma) hates Obama.

There's obviously been a ton of docs on the sinking but one of the most interesting ones I've seen attempted to identify unknown victims who were buried in Halifax's Fairview Lawn cemetery, including the remains of a 2 year old boy whose grave is still maintained by the townspeople to this day.

More than 1,500 passengers perished when Titanic sank. Two days later, a Canadian salvage ship, the Mackay-Bennett, left port in Halifax, Nova Scotia sailing 700 nautical miles southeast to the scene of the ocean liner disaster. All in all, the sailors were able to recover over 300 bodies from the water.

All in all, the sailors were able to recover over 300 bodies from the water. The sailors numbered each of the bodies, buried some at sea, and brought the rest back to Halifax. Many of the unidentified vctims were buried in graves in Halifax's Fairview Lawn cemetery.

Among the unidentified victims recovered by the shipmates of the Mackay-Bennett was a young blond boy described in the coroner's report as being around two years of age. The sailors were so moved by the fate of this unknown child that they arranged a funeral service for the boy and had a headstone placed on his grave, which they dedicated "to the memory of an unknown child." The little boy's grave has come to symbolize all the children who perished on the Titanic.

On Wednesday my BF's great grandma turned 100, but her party was yesterday. It's insane to think of all the things Granny has seen in her life. Didn't even dawn on me that the Titanic sinking was one of them.

WOW! 100, that's amazing.
Yeah, it always seems like world wars and inventions have happened sooo long ago, but some people actually lived back then.
I've always got immense respect for old people and LOVE listening to their stories! :D
