Rubina Ali's Father Arrested For Trying To Sell Her
Over the weekend, The News of the World ran a story about how they went undercover as a sheik to negotiate the sale of Rubina Ali, the adorable girl in Slumgdog Millionaire, with her daddy. After reading about this NOT RIGHT shit, Rubina's mother not only busted some ass, but she also reported it to the police. The cops in India immediately arrested Rubin's father, Rafiq Qureshi, and interrogated him for several hours. The Sun says the cops are now trying to get a hold of some recordings between the fake sheik and Rafiq and his brother, who were also working on the sale.
Rubin's mother said she heard about this craziness a couple of weeks ago, but didn't think Rafiq would go through with it. Rafiq still denies away that he was ever planning to sell Rubina, but he did confess to meeting with the sheik and his wife at a fancy hotel. Rafiq said, "I politely said Rubina is happy with me and wanted to leave. After this they made an offer of money in English which I did not understand. Then they requested me to leave her there overnight and take her in the morning. I refused and took Rubina away with me."
A friend of the family said Rubina thinks the whole thing is kind of hilarious and said to her daddy, "Father, how did you land in trouble - because of me?"
The producers of Slumdog Millionaire plan to visit Rubina next month. They are trying to get a hold of the family to see what actually went down.
You know, something in the milk ain't clean about this story. Rubina is a star in India, so why would her father try to sell off his future money maker? Maybe some shit got lost in translation? Lease, yes. Sell, why? White Oprah is scratching her coke hole over that one.

She DIDN'T turn out to be the money-maker (hopefully because Danny Boyle was smart enough to see that parents can be asswipes like this, and giving the money straight-up would be a huge mistake). And also, she's a girl.
I don't think arranged marriage technically is a parallel, because parents have to give money to GET RID of their daughters, which is why they don't want them. In this case he was going to get the cash.

While I am in love with the movie, I am so appauled that these kids weren't given a better life and weren't given money. This movie has made billions so far and will continue forever to make millions of dollars. These kids should of been set up then and there not after they won the awards, I despise Boyle and whoever else had their hands in this and using these kids this way.
Fuck that few dollars they put aside for their college education, what about their lives now, what about their families and how they're living now??? This makes me sooo sick.

Madonna's adoption of David was nothing out of the ordinary, a wealthy westerner wanting to give an impoverished child a better life. David's bio mom is deceased and the father unable to take care of him. I really think Madonna adopted with good intentions. She does not need to exploit a kid, No question David is better off with Madonna. This situation regarding Rubina's father is hardly the same thing. His intentions with the girl are dubious and probably putting her in danger.
Very sad story. Very sad that this goes on.

Selling children is somewhat a given in countires where the poor are beyond desperate to survive. Thousand of children are sold into slave trade, sex trade and Lord know what else. It's a pity it exists and a shame to any nation.
Still, what is the difference between this man and say David Bana's family who surely got a big pay off from Madonna in order to adopt him? What about Angelina Jolie who blows into Camboidia with a wad of cash and buys her babies paying off adoption agencies and gov't officals?
A person who buys a child is a guilty as the person who sells one.
A person would get more scrutinity and have to follow strict procedures if they tried to adopt a pet from the shelter.

rotten, you have a lot of good points, but i think regardless of the country it is religious culture's oppression of women that is the biggest overall problem. if women oculd control their own reproductive systems - contraception, safe and legal abortion, never mind economic independence from men - you wouldn't see this shit in india or anywhere else.
i also doubt he wanted to sell the girl though, since she's worth a lot of money to him. she's the goose that laid the golden egg. but i seriously doubt the girl thinks it's "funny". no doubt she blames herself for getting her dad arrested :(

This might be a question asked by someone like us who are used to seeing kids being exploited by their parents for money/15 minutes of fame on the entertainment business and not selling the kids for a literal "quick cash" as if they were cattle. Most likely it's the fast money the father wants or maybe he's just dim.
This sad situation is outrageous for a westerner because a westerner is not used to this kind of suckery, we are most likely used to other fucked-up crap. For Indians and other people who are used to arraigned marriages or selling of their kids as child brides or prostitutes, it might not be THAT bad or off the ordinary. He of course, should have taken the White Oprah/ Mama Spears road and whored out Rubina Ali for money on the long run but no, he's used to other kinds of kid exploitation in his country.
I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment that if a person can't provide ALL necessary stuff for their kids, they should NOT breed. I know we as animals are designed to breed and perpetuate the species, but we are also THINKING animals and can plan ahead. Too bad it will take quite a long time for those countries to change their minds about breeding when their religion/culture might be opposed to birth control or planned parenthood. Of course, this doesn't mean those rich Hollywood fucks who are over-breeding because they have MONEY and other resources are on the right path, specially when the army of nannies are the ones in charge of the kids. I mean a huge general planned population control, China-style.

There was just something so exploitive seeing all this poor Indian kids at the Oscars, knowing they were being adored and used for a brief period of time before they were banished back to the Indian slums once Oscar night was over and no one had any use for them.
