Sad Puppy News
Earlier this month, Oprah adopted two golden cocker spaniel puppies, Ivan and Sadie, from the PAWS Shelter in Chicago. Oprah showed off her new puppies on her show shortly after she brought them home. The blonde chick with the newscaster hair is holding Ivan and Oprah's got Sadie.
Well, I have some sad puppy news, Ivan is now in heaven after he passed away over the weekend. Ivan had that evil doggy disease called PARVO. Sadie is still alive, but is very ill. Oprah has flown in a team of specialists from around the world to treat Sadie. Okay, I lied about the flying them in part, but I'm sure Oprah will not let the Parovirus fuck with her life again!
Oprah released this statement to the Chicago-Sun Times: "I'm saddened by his passing though we only had him for a weekend. I remain hopeful that Sadie will pull through."
And in related news, the PAWS Animal Shelter of Chicago disappeared in a black cloud of smoke late last night.

Number One: Parvo sucks and it's scary and it may not be the fault of PAWS because it's such a common puppy disease.
Number Two: I'm in Chicago and I can personally vouch for the insanity of the PAWS organization. I don't know about the quasi-whatever comment below but I do know that they are ridiculous people. I got my cat from them and they are chock full o' nuts. There were extensive background checks and follow-ups before we could adopt (a freakin cat! aren't people just givin 'em away for free on craigslist?) They wanted me to feed my cat only either this super expensive cat food or this other super expensive organic gourmet stuff and threatened to take away my cat if they stopped by my house and saw that I wasn't feeding my cat the right food. I love my cat and take excellent care of her, but I'm not going to spend more money on her food than I do on my food! They even evaluated how much money we made a year and they told us we didn't make enough! once again-- it's a cat, not a baby. they finally "let" us adopt and they actually did do a couple of house-checks/follow-ups. talk about the most psycho animal people I've ever met.
I work at an emergency vet hospital and we regularly get parvo cases. Most shelters do vaccinate dogs for parvo but if the dog has not had the complete set of boosters, it is susceptible to contracting the disease. Contrary to an earlier post, parvo does NOT survive for 50 years. It can, however, remain dormant in the ground for 6-9 months and has an incubation period of 7-10 days. It is shed through fecal matter, which is why it is so easily contracted as it can be unknowingly tracked in on paws and shoes. This is why it is important for pet owners to pick up after their dogs. Whether you're at the dog park or in your own backyard, pick up the poo! It is part of being a responsible pet owner. You do not need any specialized "sterilizing agent." The virus can be killed by using a one part bleach to twenty parts water solution. Direct sunlight inactivates the virus, so take any furniture, rugs or bedding you are concerned about outside to an area that has already been treated.
Parvo is not an immediate death sentence. With proper supportive care, your dog can live a long, healthy life. Symptoms of parvo are lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, and bloody, foul-smelling diarrhea. The biggest danger for small puppies with parvo is dehydration, which is why supportive care is so important. Supportive care usually consists of IV fluids, antibiotics and something to prevent vomiting, such as metaclopramide. The virus bascially causes the lining of the intestine to slough off so it is necessary to administer antibiotics to prevent infection. When your dog is ready to leave the hospital, you should feed a bland diet, such as Hill's Prescription Diet i/d or Purina EN.
While I'm thinking about it, please do not feed your pets table foods! You may think you are giving it a treat but you may be giving it pancreatitis instead. But that's another conversation altogether.
If you suspect that your dog may have parvo, take it to your vet and have it tested. The test takes about 10 minutes. And for the love of Pete, please carry your puppy in your arms and do not put it on the floor to let it roam around the lobby of your vet's office, thereby spreading the virus there. If you are unable to carry your dog in, please leave it in the car and go inside to tell the receptionist at the front desk that your dog may have parvo and ask for assistance bringing it in. Dogs infected with parvo must be quarantined.

Oh, my heart breaks just thinking about that beadly beaten puppy you took care of. Kudos to you for having such a great heart. You earned your wings in heaven for that.
Viridian-
Agreed. Since highAboveManhattan views dead puppies as "karma", they are one sick bastard! I'm sure "karma" is keeping tabs on his ass.
Let's just hold Sadie in our prayers and best wishes to her.
Rest in Peace, Ivan.
It doesn't take much for puppies to get Parvo...
one trip to the dog park when they're this young. You have to take lots of precautions and keep them away from other dogs. I think Oprah lives on a farm or someplace rural. Her puppies could have been exposed to a lot there.
Poor little guy.
I spent 5k on my dog last year who was a rescue and had been so badly beaten that 28 discs in his spine (out of 32) were messed up. What can I say? I love the doggies.
This is such a cover-up.
Oprah ate that puppy and washed it down with the blood of an abandoned youth.
Where's Nancy Grace? She'll get to the bottom of this. Whoops, on her period...just read the Wheel of Fortune article. My bad.

ummm, Radical? Quasi rescue? Obviously you are some sort of crazy back yard breeder that shouldn't be breeding. And plenty of "reputable" breeders house and produce sick and diseased dogs, please. They just sweep it under the rug.
Rescues that work to save animals sometimes get sick dogs dropped on their doorsteps, even with the best precautions, sometimes there is an incubation period where the animals don't show signs. With something like 30-50 healthy dogs dying a day in a city alone, simply because there aren't enough homes, people do the best they can, to save as many as they can. It's hard and thankless work.
You are obviously some sort of total loser that thinks by putting two animals together to fuck you've accomplished something or because you have an animal with a high price tag, you're something other than a douchebag loser, but you're not. Sorry.
Glad you view animals suffering and dying as karma or vindication for your douchee self.

if oprah hadn't aligned herself with a radical quasi rescue organization who cares more about publicity then they do about dogs - the same organization that spent 9 million on a rescue facility that houses 10 dogs - the same organization that claims legitimate hobby breeders should be outlawed because they can't control canine diseases is the same organization that themselves allowed the puppies to be infected by parvo on their very own premises - brava oprah - karma kicks ass."
The Parvo virus is highly contagious and puppies and elderly dogs are very susceptible to catching it. It is a very serious virus & often deadly to dogs & puppies that don't have strong immune systems. I will bet that all the other puppies in the shelter where these two came from also have the disease. How sad.

I think this is a show here. Oprah adopted 'blonde' dogs. what does it mean subliminally that black people reject black dogs to choose white dogs? How this culture's 'whiteness' made homegirls shy away from dog's of their own race to choose dog's of the white race?
And why don't more bi-racial people have dog's named "Spot"?
*********************************
LOL! I'm brown and I, actually, rejected a white dog (not because of his colour; it had to do with timing and the situation as a whole) to keep a dog that was exactly the same colour as me - only better cuz he was brindled. I never had a dog named Spot cuz that's LAME, dude!;p

Ooh. Not cool. I was all mad at Oprah there for a second when I thought she had been remiss in vaccinating those dogs....but now I see where the fault lies...

Parvo is so sketchy and scary especially when you have puppies.
So sad.
Parvo sounds like mad cow disease prions! Indestructible. That's scary.
And even though I don't care too much for Oprah most of the time, my heart goes out to her. Losing a pet is devastating.

This is true with any vaccinations. Diseases evolve and adapt to survive, just like most things.
AND Parvo can survive wherever it is deposited without a host for over a year.
“You a motherfucker and ain’t all that.”
Even WITH vaccinations, some dogs still succumb to the virus. There are apparently some strains resistant or immune systems not strong enough even with antibodies.
“You a motherfucker and ain’t all that.”
Parvo is a dastardly disease. Even a survivor can have lifelong complications. Sadness.
“You a motherfucker and ain’t all that.”
Parvo vaccines are given in several increments. With each vaccine, the dog is more immune to Parvo. The shelter would have given the dogs a vaccine or two, depending on how old they were when Oprah adopted them. The sequence is usually completed by 12 wks of age.
Parvo is very easily picked up by even partially-vaccinated puppies. They can get it simply from walking on a surface that the pathogen is on.

Poor little things. Parvo is pretty much a death sentence. Oprah is going to have to get anywhere those puppies went in her house scrubbed down with bleach if she ever wants a dog again.
I'm confused cuz parvo is one of the things they vaccinate them for, which if he came from a shelter he should have had all his shots, so strange. Poor doggie
Probably Eddie became a Guest Star in Leann and GayFace hubby's bedroom........Leann Did all the making out/kissing while GayFace did all the works down Under..........

Pretty lame the last several weeks Michael. Thought you might be in a slump but seems something has happened or changed. How much did they give you? I might as well watch the E channel, commercials and all. Boo your opinions are so watered down they blend in with the mainstream.
Where has all the dignity gone.
Ricki lake- probably got it from when they were in the shelter. They usually quarantine puppies, but sometimes stuff can still sneak in.
Sad news, but I like the comment about "newscaster" hair. So true!
Parvo sucks so hard. The virus can live in soil or even on furniture or flooring for 50 years, even with normal cleaning. If your dog becomes sick with parvo, you have to sterilize everything you own or never have a pet again. And the sterilizing agents that work the best on parvo are very harsh and can damage wood, wool, and most upholstery.
I have a baby chihuahua, and was given EXPLICIT instructions to not let him outside or around other dogs until his parvo shots and all the booster shots were finished. Parvo vaccinations are like, THE most typical dog vaccination across all breeds. I too don't really understand how OPRAH'S dog, of all dogs, could have gotten it. Unless of course she's been too busy giving her personal chefs diva instructions and recipes for her pampered dogs' gourmet meals that she couldn't be bothered to provide like, actual health care for them. I hate that fucking cow.

Wish I lived in NYC, I'd be over tonight with doggie!
PARVO is terrible. I had a friend who had a dog get PARVO as an adult dog. It lived, but had many health problems thereafter.
i was scared to death of parvo when my pup was 2-5 mos old. they're not really supposed to be going outside before they finish their parvo shots. i took my dog outside to go to the bathroom, but the vet said don't take him anywhere public, or where there are other dogs, only around your yard. so she could've taken better care of them.
but when it strikes it can kill the pup within 24 hrs :(

There a vaccination for parvo. How did the shelter not vaccinate these dogs before adopting them out?? Who knows what else they might have or how any other dogs were infected.
