angel_i: But you know what? My dad applied for and got food stamps. He's old and in not very good health, he's retired on a fixed income and lives very very frugally. He's a Vietnam vet and I've been encouraging him to use the benefits he's earned through his service to his adopted country.

He found out that if he got a job, he'd have to pay back any benefits he received. He decided not to accept the food stamps after all, in that case.

It's pretty unlikely that he will be able to even GET a job, but if he did, paying back his benefits would wipe him out and he'd be back to square one. I think that once someone gets a job, they give up the benefits. Having to pay it all back is a complete disincentive.

vivienne - I agree with what you're saying but its a tricky thing to police. I've had a chronic illness which has made me unable to work for the last 4 years so I'm grateful welfare exists as it has kept a roof over my head. However I have had to deal with the weirdnesses of the system which frequently declared me "fit to work" as I didn't fall into their neat little categories of either "physically disabled" or "mentally ill". Apparently there is no section for a "physical illness"(?), so they had to assess me under the mental health section instead which was bizarre. However on the rare occasions I've had to go to welfare offices I've been shocked by the attitude of many of them claimants. Trampy old men who probably hadn't worked a day in their lives yelling at the staff in anger for not being efficient enough (maybe he could do better?!), and one teenage lad who looked as fit and healthy and capable of work as anyone I've ever seen, aggresively demanding they give him more money than the state benefit allows. He was like "£50 a week, what the fuck can I do with that, you've got to give me more". When the lady serving quietly suggested that he should get a job he said he couldn't for a reason I couldn't make out and they would have to give him more money. I have paid my taxes in the past and am grateful for the support I have received from the state to get through a very difficult period in my life. Other people clearly see it as a right. I've even heard people say they're entitled to not work and claim the cash because they are called "state benefits" which means its a benefit of being a British citizen! Yes you fucking moron, just because you were lucky enough to be born British you get to choose whether to work or whether to live off other people's tax money. There are millions of people like this in the UK.

I was reading this story, online, in Canada's National Newspaper (Globe and Mail) and one of the (193) comments included the sentence - "This is a disaster in the making.".

I mis-read it as "This is a dlister in the making.".

Both true.

I'm speechless - because this woman is beyond my comprehension.

It's really hard for me to understand that mindset (going through pregnancy and motherhood alone, on purpose), but I wish them all well and give them credit for being strong enough to do it. And I wouldn't stop at welfare. The system of EVERYTHING needs to be redone. People just wander around saying: That's just the way it is. All the livelong day as though we've forgotten that it was just a bunch of people who made it that way in the first place.

I don't know about you but it happens to me. I say: This is how we're going to do things. And it might work for a while but when it stops working I say: Now, we need to change the way we do things. Easy Peasy.

Unfortunately, when you got people walking around speaking on behalf of God and the even greater power, The Almighty Dollar...a lot of us treat the systems in place as tho they can't never be changed. SO frustrating!

PS. I like OUR welfare system. A lot of people poo poo'd it - calling it workfare and what not but it really does work at helping people get the support they need when they need it, getting back into the workplace AND businesses who support such social development. It's pretty cool. It's only about 12 to 15 years old now.

Chastity - just because someone is willing to pay for it doesn't mean the docs should have just done it. Docs should (but quite frequently seemingly don't, especially in places where health care is paid for privately like the states) have a code of ethics which prevents them from giving treatments to people where they don't consider it appropriate however much money they are willing to pay. Admittedly they obviously didn't realise she planned on keeping all 8, and they couldn't force her to abort some of the fetuses, but even so 6 kids already and no means of paying for them? Its unforgiveable, the General Medical Council (or whatever the US equivalent is) should strike them off. People in the UK are frequently astonished with the things people can get away with in the US in terms of health care e.g. going to multiple docs to get multiple prescriptions etc. This is much more tightly controlled in the UK and if you're with the NHS is simply impossible. It seems like in the US money talks.

Having said this I know there was a case of a woman doing the exact same thing in the UK - getting IVF and then refusing to termninate any of the 6 embryos against her doctors advice. Unsurprisingly they all died. I don't think she had any children previously though or it may just have been one, but like this woman she was clearly just in it for the money and was villified. Does it ever occur to people to work for a living?

No, seriously, this really bothers me. The long-term health implications to these children, given their premature birth status,is almost a certainty. Never mind the fiscal irresponsibility that has occurred and will occur in the future due to the adverse health impact of a premature delivery on each of these children (one I am sure that these people will expect the taxpayers to subsidize), the psychological impact of these children having to live with an avoidable and unnecessary disability as a result of the irresponsible actions of these people.

Who really won here? Take a look at the smiling doctors in that picture. Their egos won the bragging rights in the name of science. Bull.

100% Agree. The whole system needs to be re-done. There are too many people taking advantage of the government aid programs. I did my first internship at DSS and I couldn't believe some of the people coming in there to apply for welfare. Young, healthy people who just sit around on their asses popping out babies left and right for other people to take care of. Why would you have a baby if you know you are struggling to make it? Why add another mouth to feed? It doesn't make any sense. Don't get me wrong, I am all for these programs. As long as they are going toward the people who actually need it and not to people who are able to work but just won't.
