"Black Friday" Indeed
When I first read these two horrific stories yesterday, my first thought was "Only in fucking America" and that's the damn truth. Every year, we hear of bitches getting into knife fights over the last Bratz doll or choking each other for a discounted portable DVD player, but this shit right here is beyond disgusting. Beyond.
At a Wal-Mart (of course) in Long Island, NY yesterday, 34-year-old Jdimytai Damour, a temporary maintenance worker, tried to help to control the crowd of blood-thirsty zombies that stormed into the store at 5am for holiday discounts on dumb shit like X-boxes and flat-screen TVs. The crowd was so hungry to get their fat, greasy hands on stupid shit that they knocked the man over and kept on going. 200 crazies trampled over the man, killing him. He died at a Wal-Mart in Long Island, the day after Thanksgiving. Even when the man was on the ground and lifeless, shoppers continued to run past him like he wasn't even there.
One Wal-Mart employee, who was also knocked down in the stampede, said, "He was bum-rushed by 200 people. They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down, too ... I didn't know if I was going to live through it. I literally had to fight people off my back."
Damour's family members were told that he died of a heart attack. Four shoppers, including a pregnant women, were also injured. When shoppers were told that they had to leave because an employee had died, they started shouting "I've been on line since Friday morning!!!"
Wal-Mart's spokeswhore, SATAN, issued this statement: "We expected a large crowd this morning and added additional internal security, additional third-party security, additional store associates and we worked closely with the Nassau County police. We also erected barricades. Despite all of our precautions, this unfortunate event occurred."
Unfortunate event?! An unfortunate event was me almost pooping my pants yesterday. This is way, way, way beyond an "unfortunate event." You know, it makes so much sense that this happened at Wal-Mart, the epitome of American grossness. I hope that on Christmas morning, when the Wal-Mart savages' children are opening their stupid presents, they tell them "I hope you like it, because I had to kill a man for it."
And on the other side of the country, two men died at a Toys 'R Us in Palm Desert, CA. According to the L.A. Times, two chicks started arguing inside the store. One witness said it might have been over a toy, but another witness said it was over personal issues between them. Both were with dudes. One of the dudes pulled out a gun, shot it in the air and then shot the other man. It's assumed that the man who was shot also had a gun and used it to shoot the other dude. They both died.
What the fuck is wrong with America? Even wild animals behave better than we do. Stories like this make me want to donate all my shit to charity and go live in the woods for the rest of my life. People suck.

The really sickening part is that they probably knew but just didn't care b/c if they didn't make it back to electronics, they wouldn't get their 60 inch plasma TV for 40% off. Absolutely disgusting.

And don't even turn this into a racial/ethnic argument. The South Side of Long Island is a fucking slum, and is also one of the whitest places in New York City.
I never do that Black Friday bullshit. Think of all the flu viruses, cold viruses and stomach bug viruses that are all concentrated in that store where the air is hot because everyone is sweating in their winter clothes and coats. EVERY YEAR there's a story about this nonsense. Someone doesn't always die, but there is ALWAYS a trample. I live in the Bronx and there was an ad for Century 21 accessories (name and locale placed deliberately) and they were talking about their AWESOME sale of MUST-HAVES!! It was the sale that made you "want to beat the other customers for!" (and I mean beat as in hit with sticks, not beat as in get there before anybody else... serious! There were other statements that uphold my analysis)
Also, for shame Walmart! If you can knock down the prices so low and still come out ahead, why are not the prices that low everyday? This goes out to any place that is having deep sales. I love the clearance rack, but I know that they're still making a profit off of my 70% off shirt. *grump*
But then I'm too lazy to make my own stuff...

This is why I haven't participated in Black Friday shit since 2001.
When I went to a "Best Buy" that year, they had TONS of security to help control the amounts of people waiting in line outside the building and around the parking lot. A BB employee was outside, asking people exactly what in the sale ad they were looking for and handing the amount of tickets they had per each item. Once they ran out, that was it. If you didn't want anything else, you were asked to leave. When doors opened at 6 a.m., ONLY 20 people were allowed in at a time. That's organization right there. If Wal-Mart wants to avoid something like this unfortunate death, they should take into count what other stores do to help prevent such a sad case. In fact, all stores should do something like that. It's sad that a death has to result in someone thinking clearly.
With that said, I hope the family sues and gets a lot of money from the greedy corporation that is Wal-Mart. Target is the place to be, folks!

I always find it ironic when people complain about low wages, crappy benefits, low quality products, jobs being shipped overseas, the decline of communities and then shop at Wal-Mart.

People DO suck, Mikey. I hope to god the Wal-Mart man's family sues them for hundreds of millions of dollars (a drop in the bucket to them) and I hope fucking Wal-Mart settles for at least $100M. Those assholes. I know they'll make the family sign a non-disclosure gag-order type thing to go along with it (mustn't continue to smear the good name of WM), but that will be worth it.
As for Toys-R-Us - my in-laws live in Palm Desert and it used to be a nice community, but is now overrun with redneck white trash and cholos with guns, which makes it like every other place in LA. Damn. You can't get away from the armed crazies anywhere.

I know everybody wants to punish W-M in general, and the employee's family undoubtedly will sue W-M, but the real fault is with the cattle who trampled him. The cattle are just bad targets as defendants: even if someone can ID who did it, the responsible people likely have few assets or insurance. I don't think opening early for a sale is an invitation for shoppers to behave like savages.
As an aside, there's a fair chance the employee's only remedy against W-M or its subcontractor is under NY's workers' compensation law. Not buckets of money by any stretch.

There should be a special level of hell reserved for the kind of greedy materialistic swine that contributed to this man's death and a crap-filled pit even one level lower for the Walmart marketing geniuses who thought "Black Friday" was a brilliant idea over a three-martini lunch one day.
This only strengthens my preference to do my shopping online and even moreso NOT with Wal-mart where the only thing cheaper than their products (or rather the quality of their products) apparently is their ethics and sense of moral obligation for the safety and well-being of their employees and customers.

People in general suck. I think there should be a lottery system in department stores on a daily basis during the weekend of black Friday where so many people win the opportunity to shop early for sales. This way people wouldn't be killing each other to get in. I know the greedy fucking department stores won't do it though. What is Christmas anymore? I think nobody remembers even what the hell it is!

They admitted that they hired extra security and took other precautions because a situation like this is dangerous. Also, the south shore of Long island is polar opposite of the north shore. There is a certain element, trashiness and way of speaking and treating other people that alludes the rest of us who were not raised in the 'south'.

O man, my heart goes out to the Wal Mart man's family. So sad. I get up every morning at 10 minutes to four. I've never participated in the gladiator fest known as black friday because I've hear enugh horror stories to stay away. Yesterday morning I got up as usual to go to work but I was perturbed because there were more cars than usual on the road, not even remembering that it was a national sale day. I got more pissed when I realized that I had to take a detour because my ususal route was blocked off. My new route took me to the highway. I normally try to stick to the main roads because its so early in the morning and anything can happen. As I was driving down the highway I looked to the right and what I saw shocked the hell out of me. Not only was our local electonics parking lot filled the the brim but the neighboring furnitures store and houses, and gas stations, and people's lawns filled to the brim but there were hundreds of people waiting to get through four doors. They looked mashed together like cockroaches. As I was driving by all I could say was wtf? I know a sale is a sale and a bargin is a bargin but damn! To risk your life in order to save $20??? I know those bastards that ran over that man and kept going and the ones walking past him as the emergency was working on him could give a shit that somebody was dead just so they could save $5 on a toaster oven could give a shit. Consumerism at its fucking best. Almost made me late to work too.

The man who was trampled is sad. But he was there because it was his JOB. And I don't think too many people would choose to be a temporary maintenance worker, standing in the way of a frothing-at-the-mouth mob at 5:00 am on Black Friday at Wal-Mart if they had a choice.
This woman CHOSE to be there. One could argue that she didn't anticipate a stampede. But every single year, there is a news story about people rushing into stores, pushing like crazy. Like that annual bridal dress sale at Kleinfeld's where the women stampede and claw each other's eyes out. It's not a new phenomenon. It's a totally predictable outcome.
Ok..i have to say more on this. sorry I need to get it out of my system. This incident at Wal-mart is how the world is today. Race or where you came from doesn't matter to me. Not just in the states, but everywhere. Trying to get "cheap"shit we dont Need, but want for selfish crappy reasons. A company should always think of the customer's, and employees' safety when an event like this is going to happen. Knowing how people nowadays are so desperate to get what they WANT. and then crap like this happens. This is when I remember why I appreciate lawyers, in spite of the true assholes I've come across in that profession. Unfortunately the courts are the only way left in the US to punish corporations that leave workers and customers vulnerable to their own negligence when trying to maximize profits.
And make no mistake: Wal Mart could have easily prevented this. Yes, yes, the stampeding pigs are ALSO liable for their behavior. But I worked as seasonal help in Wally word while in school and believe me, those fuckers WILL lock down a store tighter than a super max prison when they feel the need to. No worker should have been in the line of that crowd which was whipped up to a frenzy by Wal Mart's advertising methods and whatever local crowd goading they were doing there. There should not have been regular workers right in front of that damned breakable glass entrance, or in the front of that crowd, period. Wal Mart can certainly afford security staff forfucksake.

It's a dirty store with a real sleazy, trashy quality and aire about it. I buy ALL my things at Publix. It's clean, fresh, good quality grocery store and the clientele are decent and respectable people. I don't care if I have to pay a little more. It's worth it.

Yeah, but half of you probably didn't have to work Black Friday. I work at an outlet mall, it mostly isn't even America citizens shopping on Black Friday any more there were more Chinese tourists there then Americans. They were the ones running into the stores, and grabbing everything, making messes pushing people. It sickens me that they act that way in another country, when if they were back in china I know they wouldn't act like that or they would get shot.
Plus the you know the people that trampled that man to death are reading about it today and our appalled at themselves and pretending they weren't apart of it.
What gets me more is they will all go to church tomorrow and pray for salvation. Too bad they sold their should to the devil for what ever the fuck was more important then that man's life.

...We were invited to a neighbor's for drinks after Thanksgiving and several of their relatives were in attendance who work at "local ___" (I have no idea what they do, they just indentified themselves as being with "local something or other"), and proceeded to drunkenly bitch about having to work more than 4 hours a day (not enough down time in an eight hour shift that includes a one hour lunch and frequent breaks), that they didn't like their family dental plan, didn't like their company vehicles, then proceeded to tell a slew of a Barack black jokes, all with the poorest grammar I've ever heard in some time. I found out from our neighbor that they both make over 200K a year (having barely graduated high school). I've never had a lunch hour nor breaks, nor ever worked just an 8 hour day/received overtime for over 8 hours, and never had a dental or eye glass plan. But --whatever -- I love what I do and don't complain about it because it's called "WORK". But these two guys' gigs are cush, and with so many people working 3 jobs and barely making it including not being able to afford health insurance, I wanted to punch both of them. P.S. Both told us that they didn't vote, because standing in line was a waste of time. I kid not. I wanted to scream.

I happily pay $2.00 more for cat litter - actually $4.00 because we have so many cats that we go through 2 boxes a week. It's the good stuff too, Arm & Hammer. We have to change both boxes out every week even though we scoop once a day. Our cats are gross.
I pay more for EVERYTHING but because I buy almost all USA-made, the stuff lasts longer so it evens out, cost-wise.

This is seriously pathetic. When I heard about the Long Island incident, I flashed back to people in Haiti and Africa fighting over FOOD because those poor people were STARVING...god.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I don't know what is wrong with America. Maybe it is that we have more than we will ever need while other people don't have basic necessities of life. Given that fact, the only way for us to live with ourselves is to continuously distract ourselves with the acquisition of more stuff. Notice I didn't say "possession" of more stuff; it's all about the shopping and acquiring.
