"Black Friday" Indeed
When I first read these two horrific stories yesterday, my first thought was "Only in fucking America" and that's the damn truth. Every year, we hear of bitches getting into knife fights over the last Bratz doll or choking each other for a discounted portable DVD player, but this shit right here is beyond disgusting. Beyond.
At a Wal-Mart (of course) in Long Island, NY yesterday, 34-year-old Jdimytai Damour, a temporary maintenance worker, tried to help to control the crowd of blood-thirsty zombies that stormed into the store at 5am for holiday discounts on dumb shit like X-boxes and flat-screen TVs. The crowd was so hungry to get their fat, greasy hands on stupid shit that they knocked the man over and kept on going. 200 crazies trampled over the man, killing him. He died at a Wal-Mart in Long Island, the day after Thanksgiving. Even when the man was on the ground and lifeless, shoppers continued to run past him like he wasn't even there.
One Wal-Mart employee, who was also knocked down in the stampede, said, "He was bum-rushed by 200 people. They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down, too ... I didn't know if I was going to live through it. I literally had to fight people off my back."
Damour's family members were told that he died of a heart attack. Four shoppers, including a pregnant women, were also injured. When shoppers were told that they had to leave because an employee had died, they started shouting "I've been on line since Friday morning!!!"
Wal-Mart's spokeswhore, SATAN, issued this statement: "We expected a large crowd this morning and added additional internal security, additional third-party security, additional store associates and we worked closely with the Nassau County police. We also erected barricades. Despite all of our precautions, this unfortunate event occurred."
Unfortunate event?! An unfortunate event was me almost pooping my pants yesterday. This is way, way, way beyond an "unfortunate event." You know, it makes so much sense that this happened at Wal-Mart, the epitome of American grossness. I hope that on Christmas morning, when the Wal-Mart savages' children are opening their stupid presents, they tell them "I hope you like it, because I had to kill a man for it."
And on the other side of the country, two men died at a Toys 'R Us in Palm Desert, CA. According to the L.A. Times, two chicks started arguing inside the store. One witness said it might have been over a toy, but another witness said it was over personal issues between them. Both were with dudes. One of the dudes pulled out a gun, shot it in the air and then shot the other man. It's assumed that the man who was shot also had a gun and used it to shoot the other dude. They both died.
What the fuck is wrong with America? Even wild animals behave better than we do. Stories like this make me want to donate all my shit to charity and go live in the woods for the rest of my life. People suck.

liquidliner, this has nothing to do with overpopulation. That is a complete lie. It is greed, superficiality, and worship of material crap that does this. Advertisers like to start brainwashing kids at a very early age getting them to want to consume, consume, consume. Most of us have forgotten what is actually important in life - this shit that just happens makes that disgustingly obvious. It is not about overpopulation - the governments of the world are owned, yes OWNED by private banks like the Federal Reserve. The Fed Reserve is not even a part of the govt (despite the deceiving name) - its a bunch of PRIVATE banks that took over in the early 1900's - so our govt has been in perpetual enslavement to them because of interest debt ever since then. Without these banks, the people of this country would not have to slave away just to survive - we'd each all be able to have more and there wouldn't be this kind of barbaric behavior going on. (stepping off of soapbox)
RE: BLACK FRIDAY
This was the actual origin:
"The earliest uses of "Black Friday" come from or reference Philadelphia and refer to the heavy traffic on that day, an implicit comparison to the extremely stressful and chaotic experience of Black Tuesday (the 1929 stock-market crash). The earliest known reference to "Black Friday" (in this sense), found by Bonnie Taylor-Blake of the American Dialect Society, refers to Black Friday 1965 and makes the Philadelphia origin explicit:
JANUARY 1966 -- "Black Friday" is the name which the Philadelphia Police Department has given to the Friday following Thanksgiving Day. It is not a term of endearment to them. "Black Friday" officially opens the Christmas shopping season in center city, and it usually brings massive traffic jams and over-crowded sidewalks as the downtown stores are mobbed from opening to closing.[12]"
However, you are all correct in saying that, now, it refers to the profit stores make, which puts them in the 'Black'.
Gotta get off this site. Bye all. Be careful out there.

Cici,
To answer your question, there are three that I can think of in Chicago where I am from.
Neighborhoods that are predominantly black, prospering and crime-free.
1) Hyde Park, where Obama currently lives
2) Chatham, where Jesse Jackson Jr lives
3) Pill-Hill, named that because mostly doctors and nurses reside there
BTW these neighborhoods have been this way since I grew up and I am 31 y.o

Doesn't sound stupid at all. It's a shame, but I think fearing others is actually a healthy & immeasurably safer way to live. I can understand how people become hermits or home school. It's a damned crap shoot whenever you leave home, & sometimes even AT home.

I blame everyone, the ignorant, greedy assholes and the assholes who run this hell hole of a store, which I've always boycotted anyway.
I remember when christmas was about one, two, maybe three gifts, then waiting for the relatives to show up, wonderful food, sneaking drinks out of my dad's scotch and canada dry, high ball to us older peeps, then to pass the time between dinner we'd play penny poker, tell stories, one time we sang and banged on pots and pans, grownups too, and re recorded it.
then later it would be cheese, crackers, relish tray and candy, candy, candy.
That is my idea of what Christmas should be and I'm horrified that a man had to die so some losers could get a fucking cheap ass sweater and shome shitty toys.

"In the Red" and "In the Black" are old accounting terms to describe whether or not a company currently has a profit or loss on the books. The red and black terms are derived from the red and black ink on an adding machine tape. Red ink on an adding machine tape means the figure was entered as a negative amount and black ink means it was entered as a positive amount. Black Friday is a day when retailers hope they will generate enough sales to either move them into or keep them in the "black".

Equating race with poverty - the standard misnoma of the racist. Black people originate from poorer countries than America etc. They haven't had the benefit of having generations of their family live, work and get educated in the wealthier Western world. They have much more work to do to get to the level of economic and educational privilege us white folks more commonly enjoy. And BTW, Western economies were built on the colonisation of this "third world" you speak of and the enslavement of its people. So rather than deningrating it and all the people who come from it, perhaps you should be showing it a little bit of gratitude.
I grew up with the "baby Jesus" theme in South America there was no Santa Claus or Papa Noel...and I was only allowed one present in Christmas cause "jesus" was too poor to bring so many gifts...and it was great.
Christmas was more of a holiday to see your parents get drunk, dance have fun and eat like pigs...here is another game altogether, and after 20 years of living in this country, I still haven't gotten used to...I have yet to do the "Black Friday" shopping....and we still open our presents on the 24th...

Manner and common courtesy would have prevented a death. Totally.
HOWEVER.... walmart knew from past experiences what was going to happen, they went ahead and fed this situation by their choices - both in advertising and lack of security and practices (best buy post again).
Just because people can be rude thoughtless cruel heartless assholes doesn't exempt walmart from protecting their staff and customers. They created the mob and tossed in raw meat.

It sounds like our Boxing Day sales - December 26th or 27th (I can't keep up with whether the 26th is illegal or not, think so.). There are huge crowds but they are pretty well-behaved, I think. I'll watch the news, this year, and see if I'm right about that.
However, even so, if I were 8 months pregnant, I certainly wouldn't go to a Boxing Day Sale. The stores are jammed and the chances of getting jabbed in the stomach, accidentally, are really high. So, yeah, I get your anger, considering the circumstances that, as you say, are predictable.
"Like that annual bridal dress sale at Kleinfeld's where the women stampede and claw each other's eyes out."
We don't have a Kleinfeld's. Sorry, Hekki, but this one made me laugh. It's so insane that it almost makes me want to come down and watch it from afar. Bizarre! You do know that if someone steps on a Canadian's foot, the person whose foot was stepped on will say "I'm sorry.".

aquarius: I was going to mention the Halloween Parade! And New Year's Eve in Times Square. Used to be crowded but fun. And the St. Patricks and Puerto Rican Day Parade. Maybe it's because I was younger, but it wasn't so scary; all you had to watch for were pickpockets and gropers. I don't recall being afraid of stampedes or terrorist events. The police didn't pen people in and search them. You could bring food and *beverages*. It's like a fascist state now, and it's not even any safer for all the surveillance.
I have been lucky enough to do all those fun things before they were ruined. I have good memories of them and sorry that my kids won't get to experience it.

I read that. I've heard before how they treat vendors. Their demands are outrageous. Employees live in poverty and go to the state for health care coverage, many small to mid sized vendors risk going out of business if they don't cave to walmarts demands. Do they treat ANYONE fairly?
Hopefully this will make more people think twice about the store - a lot of people revile it, but a lot more only look for the cheapest thing going and/or they just never think about or are exposed to the reality of walmarts practices.

You are right Nikki Lamb, is is not just Americans, but people in general...I remember reading about a stampede somewhere in the Middle East, during some kind of religious ceremony. So it does happen everywhere. It just seems especially vulgar when the stampede is due to people trying to get into a store to buy garbage. When you compare it to a human life, it's all garbage.
I don't ever venture out on Black Friday, but yesterday, I had to run over to Target to get some extension cords, and a few other things (to get my decorating finished)...the store wasn't so bad at about 2 p.m. Funny, I told my husband, I'm NOT going to Wal-Mart, that place will be a zoo...I said this *before* I read about the man being killed.

Exactly. The only time I have ever been scared for my life was during the NYC Halloween Parade 2 years ago... by the time you got to a certain point, the crowd swept you up, and you were powerless to stop it. I'm 5'3", and if it weren't for my foot-and-a-half-taller husband basically picking me up and carrying me, I could have easily been trampled without anyone even noticing. And if that can happen on a city street, I can't imagine how packed the entrance of Wal-Mart must have been. Yes, the people who ignored him or knew what was happening are also to blame, but it is fundamentally Wal-Mart's fault for knowing this was going to happen and failing to take any precautions. Like others have said, hiring extra workers for a day is NOT an appropriate precaution.
sadly this confirms what the rest of the world stereotypes as America, however, greed and stupidy = human nature world wide!

P.S. Somebody go to wal-mart and buy sushi a "vocabulary word of the day" book so he/she can express himself better. Your lack of vocabulary only intensifies your frustration; and the four letter words just aren't helping you get your point across...are they?

Well said. Sums it up perfectly for me. What an awful indictment of our once-great country.
Walmart sucks! I avoid them 98% of the time. BUT I occasionally go there for things I can't find anywhere else. One of the local grocery store chains used to sell these yummy pizza crusts that are a lot better than those Boboli crusts; they're called Mama Mary's Pizza Crusts. You brush olive oil on them before you load em up with topping and bake em, YUM. But of course the grocery store chain has either discontined them or they keep getting sold out, I'm not sure at this point. The other grocery chains don't carry them. I Googled that shit and found out Walmart has them. I have to have them.
(I don't know why I felt like talking about pizza crusts. I just had to get that out)
yeah, people do suck sometimes. the poor guy. somebody should go to jail for that.
.
And while I blame the collective greed of the door-stormers, if you've ever been caught up in a moving crowd, you will know that you can't just stop and let the people flow around you. Doesn't work that way. I've been forced off a subway car and not been able to get back on because of the packed flow of a crowd. It's not something you can fight. And if you fall down, you are dead meat. Seriously. Even if people want to stop and help, they can't.
OK, y'all. I'm stepping around some rotten sushi here and this tragedy, and heading on out to lighter posts by hot ass MK. See ya there, hot hookers <3
A few years ago there was a walmart employee who had a heart condition. At some point in his work day he was ordered by hie manager to lug a big tv to the parking lot for a customer. When the man explained that medically he wasnt able to do this the manager said like fuck you, do as I say or loose your job. The man did as he was told and dropped dead. Of course Walmart denied forcing the guy to carry this shit. Then to top it off, the man had life insurance thru Walmart. Funny thing is Walmart changed the poilcy to show the corporation as the beneficiary. Of course the widow fought and won.
I don't believe for a second Walmart Corporate anywhere cares that this poor guy died yesterday. As long as those fucking cunt shoppers were able to grab onto shit and run it over to the register Walmart approves whatever fuckery it take to get them there. I hpe the bastards that stomped on this man get to go to jail for the holidays. Merry Christmas with a gangrape broom stick up their asses.
People are fucking disgusting. Note I didn't say Americans, but PEOPLE. The pure idiocy isn't unique to our country.
I stay home purposefully on Black Friday because people are raging assholes on that day, even more so than usual. I refuse to participate in the consumeristic greed orgy that overtakes everyone. I made the mistake of going out once for Black Friday when I was young and dumb ... never, ever again.
I hope every fucking person that ran over that poor man burns in hell. Seriously.
