"Black Friday" Indeed
When I first read these two horrific stories yesterday, my first thought was "Only in fucking America" and that's the damn truth. Every year, we hear of bitches getting into knife fights over the last Bratz doll or choking each other for a discounted portable DVD player, but this shit right here is beyond disgusting. Beyond.
At a Wal-Mart (of course) in Long Island, NY yesterday, 34-year-old Jdimytai Damour, a temporary maintenance worker, tried to help to control the crowd of blood-thirsty zombies that stormed into the store at 5am for holiday discounts on dumb shit like X-boxes and flat-screen TVs. The crowd was so hungry to get their fat, greasy hands on stupid shit that they knocked the man over and kept on going. 200 crazies trampled over the man, killing him. He died at a Wal-Mart in Long Island, the day after Thanksgiving. Even when the man was on the ground and lifeless, shoppers continued to run past him like he wasn't even there.
One Wal-Mart employee, who was also knocked down in the stampede, said, "He was bum-rushed by 200 people. They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down, too ... I didn't know if I was going to live through it. I literally had to fight people off my back."
Damour's family members were told that he died of a heart attack. Four shoppers, including a pregnant women, were also injured. When shoppers were told that they had to leave because an employee had died, they started shouting "I've been on line since Friday morning!!!"
Wal-Mart's spokeswhore, SATAN, issued this statement: "We expected a large crowd this morning and added additional internal security, additional third-party security, additional store associates and we worked closely with the Nassau County police. We also erected barricades. Despite all of our precautions, this unfortunate event occurred."
Unfortunate event?! An unfortunate event was me almost pooping my pants yesterday. This is way, way, way beyond an "unfortunate event." You know, it makes so much sense that this happened at Wal-Mart, the epitome of American grossness. I hope that on Christmas morning, when the Wal-Mart savages' children are opening their stupid presents, they tell them "I hope you like it, because I had to kill a man for it."
And on the other side of the country, two men died at a Toys 'R Us in Palm Desert, CA. According to the L.A. Times, two chicks started arguing inside the store. One witness said it might have been over a toy, but another witness said it was over personal issues between them. Both were with dudes. One of the dudes pulled out a gun, shot it in the air and then shot the other man. It's assumed that the man who was shot also had a gun and used it to shoot the other dude. They both died.
What the fuck is wrong with America? Even wild animals behave better than we do. Stories like this make me want to donate all my shit to charity and go live in the woods for the rest of my life. People suck.

I just hope that President Obama is able to follow through on his plans for vastly improving education in this country, and helping to keep college an option for anyone who is willing to work for it.

I won't get into the economic/social impacts of Wal-Mart because I really don't know a whole lot about it. But I just don't understand this whole Black Friday maddness. I could care less about a state of the art TV (I've had one of mine since 1982 and the other two for about 12 years) or DVD players or IPODs or any of that other bullshit. If I had kids they would be getting a bike, big wheel, ball and bats or baseball gloves for Christmas. Not this fucking fat inducing video games and shit like that. Shit, if I had my way we would go back to 1979 with one phone in the house hard wired to the kitchen wall and a dime in a payphone if you have to make a phone call while you are out.

Kacky: I don't know if the subject is open for anyone to comment on, but I think you absolutely did the right thing. You were there for your friend over & over. Once it starts to affect your family, most specifically your children, you need to look out for them 1st. I'm sure there are shelters your friend could go to. If she's not talking to you now after all the kindness & generosity you've shown, it shows how out of touch she is. Please don't think I'm minimizing the issue of domestic violence. I just have come to believe that, unfortunately, there are some people you can't help.

Can we go off topic for a minute? Because I have been trying to figure out, what are we supposed to do about someone who keeps going back? I finally refused my friend a place to stay because it would throw our whole house into turmoil, the kids would have to listen to her recount what he had done, then she would go back when she was sure he had cooled off, only to repeat the cycle. I eventually said No Mas. Of course she doesn't speak to me anymore, but what's the right way to handle that?
It's hard for me to understand because I am a bolter. I leave at the first sign of physical contact and I do not come back.

Boycott Walmart. It's evil and uses child labor. I used to work there about 13 years ago. I quit because they treated their employees like crap and the stuff they sell is horribly manufactured. I haven't been in a Walmart since I quit 13 years ago.

When I was 7 y.o My mother created a shelter for battered women that counsels them, helps them get a job, so they can find their own place and take care of their children. Its called Tabitha's House.
I spent a majority of my childhood there and it greatly shaped me as an adult to not take my "good" life for granted; And I saw firsthand the impact that giving back has. I still spend time there (when I get the chance I am a small business owner). I was there with all my immediate family on Thanksgiving, all day.

Yes, there is a trashification of America. But it's not that the "lower class" has "taken over". It's that the middle class is disappearing and joining the "lower class". Long gone are manufacturing jobs that gave people and their families a chance at a home, a good education, etc.

Damn, the sales weren't that great at Walmart or anywhere else for that matter. I live in So Cal and went to the local Walmart with some relatives. The police presence was plentiful, the line orderly, and when they opened the doors people walked in and did their shopping. There was no running and no fights broke out. Of course, there were about 700 people there, and I have read that 2,000 people were at this particular incident. If that is the case, that store should have had uniformed security letting people in 50-100 at a time. This could have been prevented.

one other thing, i have volunteered my services free to train unemployed blacks in my city so they could improve their job prospects. i also teach immigrants' children for a living. alot of whom are here illegally yet get free education, lunches and social/medical services we can find for them. it is not a shame to be white, hardworking and successful.
Beside the whole greed aspect of this story, think about America's landfills. They will be filled with old TV's that contain 4 to 8 pounds of lead in the glass tubes. Those TV glass tubes also can contain smaller amounts of other toxins, including arsenic, chromium and beryllium. Unless you sell or give away your old TV set, they will be disposed of in a landfill near you. Disposable society indeed. :(

Though this took place in the white trashiest of all American places, WalMart, and makes the U.S. look horrible, this kind of insanity is not exclusive to the U.S. Soccer riots and concert crushes happen in other countries as well, and I would assume the shopping stampede has occurred too.

This is not a phenomena unique to America by any means. While not resulting in a death, something very similar happened in an Ikea - yes, I repeat, an IKEA - in a rough part of London (Tottenham). People were literally stampeding to get in to the store for cut price sofas and some people were hurt in the crush. I believe knives may also have been involved. I recently went to queue up outside a Diesel store to get their limited edition 30th birthday jeans and all was orderly and relaxed, but that was in a posh part of London where not many people went, apparently in the central stores people were fighting each other and they had to call the police - all over £30 jeans.

All joking aside though, I really liked this post, because it illustrates beautifully what some people might be missing: this is not a problem of America only.
I am always very cautious about using stereotypes to justify sad and scary events taking place at certain parts of the world with such stereotypes.
'People just suck' is a worldwide truth. It's easy to blame America and its culture for this, but I also know how hurtful it is to be unfairly compared to the less than exemplary countrymen, who are to blame for stupid and savage acts such as this, so I refrain from that.
If I really bought into that kind of generalizations, I'd be denying myself the chance to meet amazing people who are born/live in various places around the world.
PS: sorry for the long winded and very incoherent post.
I also want to make sure that this has nothing to do with how I feel about this particular case, because I do believe the people responsible for this poor man's death should be held accountable for their shameful actions.

Not even crowds! A couple of years ago, I was leaving a parking lot w/ my son in the back seat. Someone came screaming around the corner, & if I hadn't SLAMMED on my brakes, I would've hit him. I was pissed off, & I laid on the horn. The man blocked me in, got out of his car, ran up to mine & started screaming at me. Words I certainly didn't want my 3-year-old hearing. I backed up & got the Hell out of there. Luckily, our apt. was about 2 min. away. I managed to get home & get my son & me inside before I started to shake & cry. I had no idea if that guy was going to pull a gun, attack me or my son. All I could think was how I could've put his life in danger, & it freaking terrified me! I remember as I took off, The Child said, "Mommy, did you win?" I told him there were no winners in that situation.
