"Black Friday" Indeed
When I first read these two horrific stories yesterday, my first thought was "Only in fucking America" and that's the damn truth. Every year, we hear of bitches getting into knife fights over the last Bratz doll or choking each other for a discounted portable DVD player, but this shit right here is beyond disgusting. Beyond.
At a Wal-Mart (of course) in Long Island, NY yesterday, 34-year-old Jdimytai Damour, a temporary maintenance worker, tried to help to control the crowd of blood-thirsty zombies that stormed into the store at 5am for holiday discounts on dumb shit like X-boxes and flat-screen TVs. The crowd was so hungry to get their fat, greasy hands on stupid shit that they knocked the man over and kept on going. 200 crazies trampled over the man, killing him. He died at a Wal-Mart in Long Island, the day after Thanksgiving. Even when the man was on the ground and lifeless, shoppers continued to run past him like he wasn't even there.
One Wal-Mart employee, who was also knocked down in the stampede, said, "He was bum-rushed by 200 people. They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down, too ... I didn't know if I was going to live through it. I literally had to fight people off my back."
Damour's family members were told that he died of a heart attack. Four shoppers, including a pregnant women, were also injured. When shoppers were told that they had to leave because an employee had died, they started shouting "I've been on line since Friday morning!!!"
Wal-Mart's spokeswhore, SATAN, issued this statement: "We expected a large crowd this morning and added additional internal security, additional third-party security, additional store associates and we worked closely with the Nassau County police. We also erected barricades. Despite all of our precautions, this unfortunate event occurred."
Unfortunate event?! An unfortunate event was me almost pooping my pants yesterday. This is way, way, way beyond an "unfortunate event." You know, it makes so much sense that this happened at Wal-Mart, the epitome of American grossness. I hope that on Christmas morning, when the Wal-Mart savages' children are opening their stupid presents, they tell them "I hope you like it, because I had to kill a man for it."
And on the other side of the country, two men died at a Toys 'R Us in Palm Desert, CA. According to the L.A. Times, two chicks started arguing inside the store. One witness said it might have been over a toy, but another witness said it was over personal issues between them. Both were with dudes. One of the dudes pulled out a gun, shot it in the air and then shot the other man. It's assumed that the man who was shot also had a gun and used it to shoot the other dude. They both died.
What the fuck is wrong with America? Even wild animals behave better than we do. Stories like this make me want to donate all my shit to charity and go live in the woods for the rest of my life. People suck.

Isn't that the truth! Listen, I remember and am in my 30's.
It was not that long ago. I do blame capitalism brought to the extreme. Too much deregulating of industries -- it did not only hit the banks, but the retailers, tv stations etc. Everything is owned by one or two big firms, which is a shame because it actually striffles competition and different thought.

Ok, my friends all think I'm a lunatic for bypassing Black Friday. I have no interest in waiting for hours for a store to open. Fuck the cheap ass 50" HD TV. It's probably a piece of shit that will stop working shortly after Christmas morning. Having worked in retail, I know the game. The good stuff you really want is never going to be given away at rock bottom prices. My kids want iPods and Nintendo DS's. I noticed those weren't marked down worth a shit. Fuck Black Friday! And fuck all the walking pieces of garbage that found it necessary to trample a man to death to get into a sleazy-ass Walmart. I have no sympathy for the idiots who got hurt on the way in. I hope they don't get a fucking dime. You know darn well, they were pushing to get in just as hard to get in. They just got their ass beat down by someone stronger.

Reading all these comments makes me grieve for the America I once knew. I think I am much, much older than most of you (63). I was lucky to be young in a time when Wal Mart did not exist (Thank God!). Here in Chicago you had Marshall Fields, Carsons, Wieboldts, Golblatts, Montgomery Ward and so many more Department Stores that were individuals (not that Marshall Fields exists anymore, thanks to corporate greedy honchos at Macys). Each store had a style unique to it. Going downtown on the day after Thanksgiving (NOT CALLED BLACK FRIDAY) was a real treat, not to buy things, but to see the decorations and enjoy the Walnut Room at Marshall Fields for lunch if you could get in! Sure, there were sales, but that wasn't the POINT of it...there was a sense of sharing the season. Nobody put up Christmas decorations in bloody October, for Pete's sake.
Christmas presents were few and treasured. Kids did not break their toys a day after they received them...they knew toys, any gifts, were precious and not replaceable (yes, charge cards were mostly unknown too when I was young!!). Are my memories colored by nostalgia? Of course. But the entire season was viewed differently. You looked forward to going to Church as much as opening presents.
I don't even go to movies anymore because of the people that are there (talking, cell phones, etc.).
Like many of you wrote here, I am avoiding crowds!
Oh, I am distressed that shopping is no longer a necessity but is a competitive and compulsive sport. Before big box stores came along, you could go to a real book store (like the defunct Krochs & Brentanos in downtown Chicago) and find knowledgeable employees who didn't need computers
(of course they did not exist!) who had all the information in their brains and were courteous and actually HELPFUL. When and where did everything turn to rudeness and stupidity? I don't know. I am so shocked and disgusted that Wal Mart even opened a few hours after this tragedy. Progress?
Is greed progress? I don't think so. Okay. I am done except to say I am ashamed sometimes, of what we have become.

It's not necessarily a response to people acting like idiots- its an American custom to buy everyone you've ever met gift for christmas- even if its people you don't like or are forced to work with or whatever whatever... I'm Dutch and have have lived in the US most of my life but in Holland its a custom to MAKE your family (really doesn't extend beyond that) something very particular to the person you're making it for- buying shit is really not done a tall. Around the world, people are copying the American custom of purchasing shit at xmastime- its really ridiculous if you just stop for a minute to think about it.

This incident is THE barometer for America and its alleged "civilized" society. This was a litmus test of how out of control large masses of people can become like stampeding cattle.

That's exactly what one of my foreign friends said after visiting America for the first time. He's from a "third world" country, and after seeing how Americans act, he made the statement that "people in America are only civilized because they have everything at their disposal. There's no shortage of anything. The minute there is a dearth of anything, Americans will act more savage than any other people on the planet." When he said that, it really hit me in my heart, because I know it's true. This is not the first time this has happened, and it won't be the last.
I'm not Christian, but in the spirit of the holiday, I wonder what Jesus would think about this bastardization of his birth celebration. I can't stand the whole concept of Black Friday, and I detest Walmart. I think I've been there maybe three times in my life to get some cleaning products that were sold out at my local Target, and each and every time, I got so depressed and disgusted by the atmosphere there. Just gluttony and overabundance of fat, plastic, and flourescent lighting. It smelled like fat, it looked like shit, and it made me want to vomit.
These people who trampled over this poor young man deserve to go to the deepest level of hell. MK, you worded my feelings perfectly.
Seriously, the local authorities should start banning people from all this lining up business. It's a public safety issue now, and there is nothing at any of these classless stores (I'm looking at you too Best Buy and Toys r Us), that you absolutely NEED on Black Friday. You won't go to the poorhouse if you wait a few days or weeks to buy that trash--big fucking deal if you save $50 on a computer that was going to be on clearance on the 26th. Truly sickening.

This is just sickening!!! These are the kind of losers that shop at Walmart. I knew there was a reason I hated that place, and those cheap sloppy, always in sweatpants people that shop there. I wish Walmart would go under, and never resurface. And how gross, the first thing they start spouting off about is this poor man being a temp employee. They need to break out some of that money that they save on exploiting children for this man's family. How sick can both Walmart and those gross shoppers be? The people who stomped over this man, they know who they are, and I hope it haunts them for the rest of their lives. Ughhh, imagine having a mother or a father that would do something like that? They should just ban Black Friday from here on out. And the stupid, stupid police. Can you imagine if it were a cop that got stomped on like that? Yeah, everybody in Walmart would have been held there for hours, until they figured out who the people were that killed him. Where is the justice in any of this?
