"Black Friday" Indeed
When I first read these two horrific stories yesterday, my first thought was "Only in fucking America" and that's the damn truth. Every year, we hear of bitches getting into knife fights over the last Bratz doll or choking each other for a discounted portable DVD player, but this shit right here is beyond disgusting. Beyond.
At a Wal-Mart (of course) in Long Island, NY yesterday, 34-year-old Jdimytai Damour, a temporary maintenance worker, tried to help to control the crowd of blood-thirsty zombies that stormed into the store at 5am for holiday discounts on dumb shit like X-boxes and flat-screen TVs. The crowd was so hungry to get their fat, greasy hands on stupid shit that they knocked the man over and kept on going. 200 crazies trampled over the man, killing him. He died at a Wal-Mart in Long Island, the day after Thanksgiving. Even when the man was on the ground and lifeless, shoppers continued to run past him like he wasn't even there.
One Wal-Mart employee, who was also knocked down in the stampede, said, "He was bum-rushed by 200 people. They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down, too ... I didn't know if I was going to live through it. I literally had to fight people off my back."
Damour's family members were told that he died of a heart attack. Four shoppers, including a pregnant women, were also injured. When shoppers were told that they had to leave because an employee had died, they started shouting "I've been on line since Friday morning!!!"
Wal-Mart's spokeswhore, SATAN, issued this statement: "We expected a large crowd this morning and added additional internal security, additional third-party security, additional store associates and we worked closely with the Nassau County police. We also erected barricades. Despite all of our precautions, this unfortunate event occurred."
Unfortunate event?! An unfortunate event was me almost pooping my pants yesterday. This is way, way, way beyond an "unfortunate event." You know, it makes so much sense that this happened at Wal-Mart, the epitome of American grossness. I hope that on Christmas morning, when the Wal-Mart savages' children are opening their stupid presents, they tell them "I hope you like it, because I had to kill a man for it."
And on the other side of the country, two men died at a Toys 'R Us in Palm Desert, CA. According to the L.A. Times, two chicks started arguing inside the store. One witness said it might have been over a toy, but another witness said it was over personal issues between them. Both were with dudes. One of the dudes pulled out a gun, shot it in the air and then shot the other man. It's assumed that the man who was shot also had a gun and used it to shoot the other dude. They both died.
What the fuck is wrong with America? Even wild animals behave better than we do. Stories like this make me want to donate all my shit to charity and go live in the woods for the rest of my life. People suck.

This is a sad commentary about human nature and the lack of personal responsibility. Since when did shopping and the ‘all-mighty dollar’ take precedent over life? When did people become so single minded , so blind-sided that the death of a fellow human being caused by such carelessness, can become so nonchalant that “people” are willing to stomp and walk over him without thought or compassion? When did society become so uncivilized? Is it fear or weakness or both that cause such senseless violence and mindlessness? We could all be so lucky to watch nature take its course over these non-contributing slackers who waste good air space for the rest of us. One day, the world will be free of you and it can’t come soon enough. If you take offense to this, then that is just as well, for you know who you are. We all know.
May the all-mighty dollar and you’re your mindlessness sustain you for all it can. For when that runs out, you will know and understand what it feels like to be stomped to death, by your own lack of responsibility and consciousness. I speak for the majority when I say I look forward to that day.
Deals or no, I just can't imagine why anyone would subject themselves to shopping on Black Friday. The after-work rush at Trader Joe's is enough to send me over the edge. Thank god for online shopping.
Amen MK!
I live in Palm Desert CA and drove right past the Toys R Us, well "crawled" is a better word becuz of all the traffic, after the shooting. It didn't stop anyone from shopping, people don't care. People are self-centered jerks.
MK, its clear how strongly you feel about this. Im with you, totally.
This is the type of shit that makes me drink.

I'm happy to see so many people share my hatred of Walmart! I've never set foot in there and don't ever plan to. Pisses me off how some people act as if there is no other store w/ cheap prices for cheap crap that costs 10 cents to make but they sell at the bargain price of $9.99!
I wish every person who actually stepped on this poor man and kept running could be charged with manslaughter, but I know that's pretty much impossible.

Ah, I forgot the minimum wage went up this year! I guess they're starting out at $6.55 an hour these days. My husband's cousin was laid off from one of the GM-affiliated factories and ended up back at Wal-Mart (where he had worked some 10 years earlier when just starting out) -- his salary was literally reduced by 2/3 because he started out at minimum wage (plus, Wal-Mart doesn't like to give anyone more than 32 hours a week lest they qualify for the shitty health insurance).
Anyway, more on topic, great post. I remember my mom commenting on how depressing it was that so many people she knew refused to wait in line to VOTE on Nov. 4 ("why should i have to wait? voting is my right!") yet willingly left their homes at 2:00 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving to wait in line for a fucking television. Like she said, "Everyone I know has a TV. What is so wrong with everyone's TVs all of a sudden that they have to run out and get new ones?"
Working in the social services will definitely burn you out, kudos to you for keeping with it for so long.
#Aqaurius - paying its starting associates $5.50 per hour.
What? Is that legal? Surely the US has minimum wage?
I am sickened by this and agree that it's not confined to the US. What pisses me off is alongside the dreadful herd mentality and the impossible to imagine actions of this mob- why are they there? I imagine the answer will be they 'need' to but things for xmas but why? Are they Christians for whom this is a big, spiritual event? Then you don't need cheap shit then. Are you pagans celebrating the winter solstice? Then you don't need cheap shit then. Are you morons who do what ever you are told to do by multi nationals and think you are less of a person if you don't have a big TV? Ah, then you need cheap shit then. And if some poor sod gets killed then so be it- your kids will have the finest cheap shit and you can watch awful telly on a screen that is the size of my bathroom and the sprit of the festival of buying stupid shit will be alive and well.
One of the many images that haunts me from my recently ended social work career is the home visit where one wall is dominated by a TV the size of a cinema screen and there is no carpet on the floor and the kids are in filthy clothes. And this is in the UK so I can’t blame Wal-Mart or its ilk. I was shopping the other day in Matalan- I don’t know if it exists outside the UK but it’s cheap. People were buying horrible little sets of nasty bubble bath and soap and I thought – who the hell would want that? It will go in the bin or it will sit on a shelf and be given to someone else. I got to the checkout with some wrapping paper and the queue was so long I just left. . There isn't a material thing I would queue for hours for, let alone at the crack of dawn like these people in the US on Black Friday and the UK on the opening day of the January sales.
I like nice things as much as the next person- I don’t much care about TVs but love my ipod irrationally- but holidays are part and parcel of human history because we need special times to enjoy each other and think about the past and the future. For that, no stupid shit is required.

That people have this kind of power, but they won't use it for something worthwhile, like reforming our fucked up social system. No. They coalesce into one all-powerful, raging mass, in order to gorge themselves on material things. And not even quality material things, but crap mass-produced by slaves in Chinese factories.

The Walmart incident was horrific and a tragedy. But before you slag off Americans, be careful. The same thing happened at the grand opening of the Primark store on Oxford Street in London last year!
People all over the world are capable of being selfish, greedy and insensitive.
As people have mentioned, it takes common sense, and planning for Black Fri, which I feel should no longer exist.
I used to work for Circuit City, granted C.City doesn't have half the crap walmart has, but it was still pretty popular on Black Fri. When I had to work Black Fri they handed out cards with numbers to the people outside who were there early. The number on the card corresponded with the big sale item you were purchasing. We only handed out as many cards as we did inventory to avoid fights, etc. It worked well, but we still had idiots that ran in acting crazy. I worked at a Circuit City that had two levels, and these idiots were running up the escalator that was going the opposite way, people were falling. It was crazy, but handing out the cards was a smart move, cause it could have been much worse.
Other scary ass situations to avoid:
-Mosh pits
-College football stadiums after the home team beats some massive foe and the students storm the field to tear down the goalposts
-Small bars with 80's bands that have a pyrotechnic show(The Station bar anyone? Great White?)
-Woodstock reunions where there's poor sanition and the concessions are overpriced

I don't know if this has already been said--- but I find it ironic that Wal-Mart won't stock any music with a "Parental Advisory" sticker on it, yet obviously have no issue with the safety of their employees. Screwed up priorities much?

Now, hold up there Missy...Which came first the chicken or the egg? Huh? It's them NASTY lyrics in that NASTY music other retailers feed to the masses...Them masses would be good peaceful Christian WalMart shoppin' folk if other retailers didn't find a way to git the DEVIL in 'em...Then, they come to WalMart, not knowin' they's possessed with SEX AND ROCK 'N ROLL EVIL, and they done what they done...or rather they done what the DEVIL in 'em done...but we here at WalMart is hopin' they do the right thing and ask JESUS for forgiveness, so their beautiful Christian children can watch their $9.99 Incredible Hulk DVD's on Christmas Day...oh, and it's a shame about that dead trampled guy, what's his name? We'll pray for him in church, after we've all opened our presents....

There are MANY things a store can do for crowd control, and WalMart CHOSE to do NONE OF THEM. I've worked in retail, and I KNOW there are things you do to avoid this kind of shit. WalMart CHOSE to do none of them. They knew this type of shit could happen. This WAS NOT unforeseeable. WalMart will argue that it was, and because they have the $$$ to keep any case against them in court FOREVER they will win. So, the victims will take a paltry settlement IF that because they can't afford to fight this disgusting MONSTER in court and bring it down. No one can. They are untouchable and they know it.

r5bales, I totally agree with you. It was someone else earlier in the thread that said that thing that you quoted, about the people not helping the immigrant employee guy.
Walmart sucks. These stores can take measures to stop this nonsense. Give out line tickets and make people go away after they've got their tickets; have the local police get involved and not let anyone loiter on the property before a sale. If a crowd develops that's too large for the employees to safely handle, DO NOT OPEN FOR BUSINESS.
Actually, the economy implosion oughta help with this rabid desire to buy shit on one singular day. (Or hell, it might make it worse, with people being more desperate and all).

The cockroaches always survive. I fucking hate wal-mart and I hate what they stand for and I would gladly see those fuckers FINALLY have some karma.
"since he might have a different skin color than they do they just rush on by without helping him."
From the news reports, there were 4 people who tried to help him. They were also trampled. This is how the pregnant women ended up in the hospital. The issue was not race, but one of mob mentality, fed by the press' harping on and on and on about the economy, foreclosures, the stockmarket, and how bad things are going to get. It was a stupid & heartbreaking incident. I agree with one poster who said they should have gathered up the whole bunch, hauled their asses to jail, and charged them all with manslaughter.
I am not sure how we can prevent this from happening again without US becoming a nanny state. Walmart can't set guards with dobermans at the doors to keep people from lining up. That would cause outrage with cries of racism, elitism, or discrimination of what ever kind. I have seen it and heard it locally when a store tried to prevent people from entering a specific area.
I know some Walmart upper managment in my area. They do care about their employees, they do care about the community. They also do what headquarters tells them to do. Hence the lead loss sales. The name of the game is to make money. That is the whole reason for anyone to go into business. I am not in business to lose money. Walmart isn't either. Their practices are harsh, but legal in the US. We can't fight that. We can only vote with our money and feet by not shopping there.

I'd like to say that I'm too principled to shop at WalMart but I've gone in there occasionally when I'm not feeling to fragile and will again probably.
The people that I feel sorry for are the people who work there. Those WalMart Greeters who totter out and shriek their greeting at you and slap a sticker on your bag, the bored, middle-aged people with yellow skin and bad dye-jobs at the cash, the 15 year old drop-outs sorting socks in bins....if there is hell on earth, it's at your local WalMart.

Ignorance=Ignore.
I hate it when people do that. It's a good reason for them to think of a "God" always watching them. They think that if no one can pinpoint them as the wrongdoer, they don't have to do right. It's a sad testimony to the examples they've been given by the leaders in their societies. All kinds of leaders - not just political; spiritual, industrial, corporate....the whole shebang.
I was kind of a naughty kid, sneaky (I'm still sneaky now but I don't use it to steal;)- but I came from criminals, waddyawant? There was a point early on tho, where it was just knowing that I knew that it was wrong was too much. It didn't matter that I never got caught.
Honestly, I do believe it's my interest in spirituality that saved me. Not any one God, because they all say it at some point and in some way: We are all part of the same thing - that which we bestow upon others, we are also bestowing upon ourselves. That's a good way for me to think about it, being a selfish teen - or : Do unto others as you would have them do unto you...because it cuts through the human affliction of "ego". It's not all about someone else - it's about ME too.
Now, tho it's more about: Do I want to be a sick component of this world or a healthy one? Do I want to pay into the "good" or the "evil"...choices, choices....

Hi . Hope your Turkey Day was good and I agree with your comment. I never shop at Walmart for many reasons. I'd love to see people pay a bit more for goods made here and know that they didn't contain lead or items that end up killing pets and people. While I may bear the cost at this end on the price of the goods (and it isn't that much) it boosts the income of towns which funnels back to schools, etc. when factories stay here.

Hi back, OCD! I hope your TD was good as well [and, yes, mine was]! :)
I agree, I'd rather pay a bit more at a "Mom and pop" store or a local grocery chain rather than save a few bucks at some slave-labor outsourced driven chain.
Nature was already telling us our fate with the colony collapse disorder from the bees, genetic altering of plant life, our environment is getting majorly effed up with toxic waste dumping, plastic manufacturing, mercury and lead poisoning, melamine poisoning, purposeful polluting city water with fluoridation, cell phone radiation...
No, I'm not wearing a tin-foil hat. This shit is just resultant of us all being a bunch of sheep and trusting the fucking gov. to protect our fuzzy butts.

Hi, tuna528...thanks for your thoughtful words. I saw a Walmart ad on TV this afternoon, and I was amazed how angry I got.
I will be writing my letter this week.
oops wrong thread
Hello again from Tuna528. Thanks to all the people who acknowledged my post. I've been sitting here at the computer for the last letter composing a letter to WalMart. About how disgusting they are, etc. Of course they won't even read it, probably, but I HAVE to do something. Sure, I don't shop there so they aren't going to miss my money (!!!) but think of this....what if we could encourage current shoppers somehow to NOT GO THERE anymore? That is the only way they will "listen'. WHAT IF all of you here take the time to write a letter too? You are all very capable writers...maybe MK could spearhead some kind of category such as a simple "I'm mad as hell at WalMART and I'm not going to take it anymore?" (with apologies to the movie NETWORK). It is not only the greed of the ugly shoppers who killed that poor man; it is the entire concept of WalMart. How many Mom and POP stores have they shuttered forever? Just one person (me) throwing a stone at Goliath won't do much, but we could try, could we not? Where would President elect Obama be now if all of you did not believe in him? Oh, oh, two rants on one day.
Sorry folks, I'm just so upset that man died. For nothing. Thanks for listening.

I offered ignorance as a reason, not an excuse. Sadly enough, there are obviously people who are ignorant of basic human decency. It's way fucked up, but they haven't learned any better.
EDIT:
In my humble opinion it IS ignorant to wait in line for hours for a thing. I've never done it in 47 years. I've never camped out for concert tickets, or to get an the latest, hottest phone gadget, or even to vote.
People all over the country were bitching about the wait to vote early. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I voted around 7:30 on November 4th, and was out of there in 10 minutes.

Well, so much for that "Ignorance is BLISS" bullshit eh? lol There's a term called, "Block buster" for a reason...people will wait around blocks for a frickin' movie! -Tack that up to another thing I've NEVER done. Thank goodness the whackos dressed in character didn't trample each other though...I don't know if my psyche could have taken seeing Chewbacca stomp C3P0 to death over a theatre seat. *sniffle*
Ever feel like you're the only sane person you know???????
(((HUG)))
I've never camped out for anything other than just to be out in nature. Whatta concept eh?!
