I think that is a great observation.
I remember reading that Piaf wore a simple black dress, when performing, in order to draw attention only to her face or something along those lines.
Back in the good ole days, a singer would not rely on gimmicks to perform, because not only did he/she had the singing chops, they also knew how to sing a song with emotion in their voice and convey it with their facial expressions too.
