In a way, the entertainment business might just be an extrapolated version of reality. Who knows? I think in both worlds, people can be really apt at hiding these things. Only differences are the reasons as to why they do it.

Sibsi - no not really, I'm not exactly sure what you're referring to or what you're exactly saying but this is my essential argument:

1. Have lots of friends who have had lots of sex etc with people of the same sex and don't seem to be too attracted to the opposite sex but have struggled to come out and admit it. Some had long-term straight relationships before eventually coming out, others still closetted and trying but generally failing to have straight relationships or some just marrying and conforming.

2. Grew up in theatre, went to dance school, drama school, worked in tv industry so know a lot of artistic types and lots about the difference between what celebs say to the public and what is in fact the truth. Celebs lie constantly in interiews which a lot of people really struggle to believe. They lie about age, plastic surgery, sexuality, who they do and don't like, the works. This is standard practice amongst all celebs and not just one or two. The public think they know who celebs are but they don't have a clue that what they're being fed it mostly utter rubbish. In short, celebs actually do a very good job of keeping their private lives private and only tell us what they think will benefit their career. Even the most honest-seeming celebs don't say half of what goes on in their lives.

3. If you've dipped your toe into the theatre/media worlds you will find that there are far more openly gay people than in other more repressed environments. It is also a much more sexually liberated or debauched (however you look at it) world where much kinkier sexual practices are totally the norm. So I'm rarely surprised that so many actors etc have had gay sex, I'm more surprised at how shocked people outside that world are in reaction to it.

Gwen has on great shoes and her legs look enviable but that dress is really not flattering to her top half at all. There is no way that she can lift her arm above her shoulder without the dress falling off.

I have no problem accepting the revelation that Paul or even freakin' Sean Connery are gay or experimented with their sexuality and I agree with your last post. However, I back tracked to what started this whole thing and noticed that in some posts you seem to make the jump from saying 'this is a common thing with actors/musicians' to 'everybody is closeted' or something along those lines, or am I misinterpreting it?

I don't have a problem accepting that the 'normal' people may have repressed homosexual feelings either, but I think it's too easy to jump into the next step and generalize like this after your own experiences or what you know/heard about goes on in the entertainment world.

Yeah the Marilyn Monroe stories I find confusing. The story goes that her first lesbian experiences were with her female acting coach who had to teach her how to screen kiss and fantasised about doing it with her for real. Then the coach said she lost her to other women. In the tape from MM's conversation with her psychoanalyst she says how her drama coach taught her how to do it (give head presumably), but that she later turned Joan Crawford down as "she didn't much like having sex with women". I think the basic deal with MM was that she was a very lonely and insecure woman and was looking for love, affection, attention, company whatever with whoever she could get it. It doesn't sound like she was ever that attracted to women but tried it out all the same. I can't tell you how many girls who say they are straight have also done this - it seems like everyone is willing to experiment.

And as for Paul Newman I would say that it is likely he was much the same. Its so common amongst actors/singers/models whatever to experiment sexually with the opposite sex that its really not that unlikely that he did. I have to reiterate that acting has never been the thing that you find a lot of out and out heterosexual macho men doing. Male actors are always more in touch with their gay or feminine side so homosexual tendencies are no great shock. The Hollywood machine has controlled the images of its stars for such a long time that we have all been brainwashed into thinking that all actors are heterosexual. Its more likely that the opposite is the case, but when multi-millions are at stake who's going to be honest? Hell, I've even heard stories that John Lennon and Paul McCartney were together for a while, and why this may seem shocking, you have to ask why this is? It was the 60's, they were artists, why should we be surprised. My general rule of thumb is that in all artisic, hedonistic fields the likelihood is that more people are going to be gay or sexually experimental than in so-called "normal" life. Its a different world and the normal rules just don't apply.

Monroe was NO BETTER than Anna Nicole Smith, the studios just hid the facts better back then, but not well enough for everyone to know she was a drunken pill poppin' whore who happened to have big boobs and be pretty...Yeah, that whore whored arond like whores do, but if she was murdered, she didn't deserve that, and if she committed suicide, she probably did not deserve the dark place that led her there, and if she overdosed, I still have compassion, she died too young, but I don't consider her death any more tragic than Anna Nicole's. They were addicts, they were sluts, they were hedonists at the very least, but neither deserved their death.

Louise and Stank: Fontainebleau (MK spelled it wrong) is just the name of a famous royal palace near Paris. I don't think "bleau" means anything anymore. It was prolly a corruption of something long ago (maybe "bleu"?). "Fontaine" originally meant "spring"; it now includes fountain.

I don't know if Paul Newman was gay or bi, but I prefer to remain neutral and base my opinions on something other than *rumour*. What I do know about rumours is that anyone can start them and they can be devastating because they're like cockroaches - they will not die - even if they're proved to be false. They will survive like urban legends. There will always be *someone* whose cousin's best friend's girlfriend's brother saw it/heard it etc etc etc.

Joe Shmoe- I was referring to the stuff written about Travolta/Cruise/Will Smith & Scientology telling them they can cure them of homosexuality for a price. Plus what's really been going on in Madge's marriage, the Cruise/Holmes marriage etc. The Hollywood madam stuff will either be disproved or otherwise when her book comes out - if she hasn't got the proof she won't publish as she'll be sued to within an inch of her life. That had all the detail about men hiring male hookers etc: Jack Nicholson, Eddie Murphy and so on. She wouldn't come out and say these things if she couldn't back it up - she'd be toast. The Newman stuff was separate to that - more speculative. I stand by my view that the site is "brave".

I don't know about you but I was pretty surprised to hear that Marilyn Monroe had sex with women - I'd never have thought that in a million years. Plus nearly all the supermodels did or still do if they haven't conformed to society yet a la Cindy Crawford. I get surprised myself about these people even though I'm gay so it must be even more difficult to believe if you're straight. I just think anyone is as likely to be gay as they are straight, or bi if they fancy it. But so many people stay in the closet it skews people's view about how many of us are really out there!

But I'll give you this - there could have been a fair few dalliances like these for just about everyone given that they all went through the 60s and 70s together - the age of aquarius, as it were. Especially artists tend to put themselves in the way of advancing ideas.

Could he have been gay? No clue on my part.
Is it possible he checked out some sexual liberty - I think that's highly likely, myself. But as I've said before - makes no difference either way - he was a great man. That is all I really need to know.

angel_i, trust me I love old Hollywood and growing up watching and reading just anything I could about it. Actors such as Errol Flynn, Cary Grant and Lawrence Olivier were openly bi. They didn't care who knew and yes everyone talked. But the studios didn't want the public to know. That's why we know about them today.

I think if Paul Newman was gay or bi we all would have heard at least one rumor. I have never heard any just that Butch and Sundance were supposedly gay in the movie. And if it turns out he was gay or bi after JoAnna dies people will come out in droves to talk. Trust me on this one.

To be honest I didn't read it in too much depth as Paul Newman is a bit before my time so not of great interest to me. There was something about him living with Gore Vidal or something I can't remember what it said. The thing is those pretty actor men are very often gay or bi, its pretty common. I guess what shocks me more is why people are so shocked at someone possibly leaning that way. It just demonstrates why so many actors stay in the closet - for a lot of people so much seems to be invested in who they sleep with outside their films as opposed to how good an actor they are in them.

Thats cool - yep there are a whole lot more of us gays out there than you might suspect. Lots of people I've had sex with now categorically deny any same sex leanings or the fact that they've ever even dabbled. It's bizarre to me but I understand the societal pressure they're under. I just feel sorry for people who just can't be who they are. It sucks to have sex with someone you don't fancy at all and have to pretend to be enjoying it believe me! I don't know how they keep it up (boom boom).

Keane my intent wasn't to offend I read the article he wrote about the way some men have been dressing lately and it pissed me off. So in the spirit of the piece I responding the way he feels the average schmuck would.

Putsomestankonit - I've not read any thing about which you speak on that site so I can't really comment, but "trashy" is not the word I'd use to describe it, more like "brave". He's put a lot of stuff out there thats been rumoured for a very long time but he's the first person who's brave enough to say it. As a general rule I have discovered that there are a whole lot of gay people in this world, a whole lot more than most people realise. The reason being that a lot of them are closetted or conform to society and get married rather than coming out to everyone. Lots of my friends and people I went to college with are like this so the Hollywood rumours don't surprise me at all. And just one other thing - "shirtlifter" is not the best way in the world to refer to someone who's gay - its considered pretty offensive by some.

Keane: Well, I guess anything is possible. I'm always laughing a little at the people who go "Oh no, not my Anderson (or Hugh Jackman or WIll Smith or whoever)!", so I will not be so naive. But that hurts...

Deb - but why? Why would anyone be so shocked that anyone is or isn't gay? I'm a lesbian and seriously no-one ever believes it when I tell them - I always go through the 10 minute disbelief statement when I tell them. People say that I seem so straight, that I'm totally feminine and there's nothing about me that would indicate that I am, but I am absolutely 100%. People who don't know now would NEVER guess it in a million years. They will be shocked when they find out. But why so shocking? Nothing apart from my biological sexual feelings which no-one would know about if I didn't tell them make me gay. And its the same for a lot of other people. I know plenty of other (mainly closeted to be honest) men and women who are exactly the same.
