This story made me literally start checking Craigslist for apts in Oregon. I have lived my whole life in Indiana, and while I would be sad to leave, it is a place where everyone gives a shit about everybody else's business.
Seriously---I have frequently been called a "lesbian" (I'm not) by passers-by in stores or on the street, because when I go out to run errands, I purposely dress casually and wear no make-up. I mean, it's literally just like scenes in old movies in which Blacks are harassed openly and enthusiastically.
More than a threat or a even just an epithet, that kind of harassment makes me want to live in place where nobody gives a SHIT what you look like or what you do behind closed doors.

I am floored! In 1976 I was litterally ran out of Silverton because my foster parents there thought I might be gay or something. I am now a transgender male to female at 45 years of age. I was 14 and younger when I was terrorized by the Christian fundamentalist's from the Assembly of God church which last I knew was across from the old High School. in Silverton. It's too bad you cannot make anti-hate retroactive in Silverton as mayor. I will never forget how hate filled that town was in the mid 1970's towards different people. I hope the change is real. I also know hate by a few can be much more potent than acceptance by many. After all, it is not those who accept you who wish to harm you is it? I apologize for gramerical errors, it is really difficult to talk about let alone spell check!

I think this is wonderful! He seems like a fantastic person. Good for him for having the courage to live as he wishes, especially since it hurts no one. As I said before if he lived in 17th Century France, or if he were in an 80's hair band for that matter, he would fit right in.
Fashions have shifted so much over the years that many men who naturally prefer a more flamboyant style have been left out in the cold. Men's business suits don't offer much in the way of variety and casual attire for men also is not very interesting. It seems natural then that he would want to get the cleavage so that he looks better in women's clothes.

I, too, would love it if men in general would not fear losing jobs/being looked on as "freaks"/"unstable" just for wanting to be creative with their attire on a regular basis. I think the 80s as well as the 60s and part of the 70s all came close with accepting men going to work with at least some "wild" or "femme" colors (pink dress shirts in the 80s were big IIRC) and hair (not just hair band hair, but Flock of Seagulls-styling hotness). I'd also love to see more men, now that winter is here, in those floor-length overcoats/leather jackets with maybe some unusual broaches/lapel pins, etc. A little more oomph to daily male attire.

My hometown is Silverton, Oregon, and I grew up going to Stu's movie theater (the only one in town, 1 screen). Last time I was in Silverton, he was still collecting movie tickets at the door and welcoming every guest to his theater. He was dressed to the nines that night--dress, cape, platform high heels, long red fingernails, and of course cleavage for all to see.
He's probably the only cool part about Silverton--really an icon, especially as Mayor. In the spirit of Milk, perhaps someone will step up and make a movie about Stu.
