Prop 8 Passed....

Look at these two precious lesbians being all smiley and married. Well, Prop 8 has come along and stomped all over their pure happiness. They're just two sad lesbians now and that is a sin! Gayelles should never be sad.

Prop 8, which re-bans gay marriage, will most likely pass. Right now 95% of the votes have been counted. 52% are for and 48% are against. There's still around 4 million absentee ballots that need to be counted, but it's probably not enough to turn things around. The state is no longer marrying the gays as of today. It's looking grim and gross.

A few of the 18,000 couples that were married will file lawsuits. Civil rights groups are also challenging the measure by asking the Supreme Court to strike it down based on the argument that you can't just take shit away from one certain group.

I don't get this shit. I'm a tax-paying dumb bitch like everyone else. I should have the right to fly to California, catch a sugar daddy on his death bed, marry him, wait a couple of months for him to kick it and then collect all his cash. Seriously, that's my lifelong goal and now a bunch of fun killers in California have stopped me from being able to achieve this!

I totally agree.

By the old standards, I would probably identify myself as a Republican. Less government interference, states' rights, fiscally conservative. Yup, that would be me. Although, I'm all for legalizing pot and gay marriage and adoption.

As a Californian, I am shocked and really pissed off about the 52% of retards with whom I share a state. I can't believe people can be so progressive to vote for Obama (thank goodness for that!), but still be stuck in a status quo mindset about marriage. It just shows we've come a long way but still have much further to go. The fight is not over. I live in San Francisco and I already know of some serious lawsuits being brought to prevent this hateful proposition from taking effect.

That's just awful. We've has gay marrige in the UK for about four years and the sky hasn't fallen. How can something that was legal become ilegal? Doesn't the human rights act forbid retrospective legislation? Or did Bush fail to sign up for that? I feel so sad for people who thought they had civil rights, only to have them taken away. It diminishes everyone when we don't have equal rights. Today of all days. Shame.

BellaDiva, and I would never say any church or person should be forced to "believe" in gay marriage. But I do believe in the separation of church and state -- and I think Christ did, too, as he said, "Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s.” For me, religious beliefs just do not enter into this. I don't believe in legislating religion or morals in that way.

I honestly wasn't aware that gay unions weren't able to take advantage of the same things that straight marriages can. That's ridiculous. I figured it was all about some interpretation of the bible.

On the GOP issue. As bad as they got spanked last night they may want to turn to the gay community to progress their party into the now. They obviously have no chance with minorities due to the "spread the wealth" issue. I don't think all GOP'ers are zealots. Some are just hard working Americans.

Gay marriage wouldn't bother me in the least, even as a straight married Texan. Love is love regardless of the hole or the pole.

Why is labeling a relationship as "married" mean so much? Isn't it just another Judeo christian label the zealots use to beat everyone over the head with.

I thought gay folks still have the same rights as "married" people like insurance, adoption, wills, etc. I'm just asking."

No, they do not have the same rights. Some states provide civil unions that are equal to marriages with regard to state rights, and some states provide civil unions with SOME of the straight rights of marriage. There are federal rights (social security inheritance, for example) that are not open to any gay people, whether they were married in Massachusetts or civil-unioned in New Jersey. Civil unions are not all equal, and none of them are equal to marriages when you cound federal rights.

I, for one, could give a shit about the word. If we had civil unions, in ALL states, that offered ALL of the EXACT same rights as marriages, that's fine enough for me - but it must be FULLY equal, or it's not fair. Some gays disagree on the word 'marriage,' saying it's still "separate but equal," but the issue of semantics doesn't personally interest me.

Then there is those commercial featuring the exploitation of children of the few people with a fixation for banning non-religious marriage using them to say gems like "I don't want to be taught about homosexuality at school".

It's easy to see how the passages in the Bible about marriage connect with the times it was written: a few political leaders knew that population was a tool for both growth, military force and support of their laws, so it translated in to the religion as it was (and shamefully still is) the perfect tool to move masses by their faith into blindly follow the will of a few, and since homosexuals can't procreate, let's say, oh, it's a sin... cue to misinformation, persecution, bashing and stubbornness for hundreds of years and still going (and in unfortunate cases, because it's a free pass to be an asshole and to bully people that are as you are).

It's really a faith test when things are allowed to happen because of a few, and please, don't talk in plural when speaking of religious groups or any group, it's well know there are always assholes with power in both sides of an issue, but they don't represent the collective will of it.

Keep in mind that 1.5 million Obama voters voted to pass Prop 8 -- around 25%. Actually, African-Americans and Hispanics were two ethnic groups that overwhelmingly voted for it; whites were slightly against. There's a lot more to this story than a bunch of right-wing hate."

Of course many Hispanics voted against it, and half, if not all, were mostly Catholic I'm sure. It's OK to let their priests get away with molesting boys, but not for gays to find true happiness. Fucking bullshit.

__________________________

I'm in Cali, Catholic, and voted No on Prop 8. And my sister works for a Catholic institution. I was pleased to learn that many of the religious folk were also planning on voting NO. As well as NO on Prop 4, which would require parent notification for underage abortions. I don't think Catholicism is as rigid or conservative as it is portrayed... or it doesn't have to be. All the nuns I've known have been incredible feminists. (Although parish priests are usually the worst and most conservative). My mother always told me that as people, we differ from animals because we have the power to reason... and in that way, we are made in God's image. Think, people. Don't just follow -- that's completely unchristian and non-Catholic.

geliasen, I noticed that those idiotic ads were on the Latin channels all the time. One lil' girl asking "Mommy is it true I can marry a Princess?" and the mom looking all shocked... My mom would get so angry at those commercials. Those commercials would far outnumber the ones against.

Well, the old-school Republicans would've been likely to legalize gay marriage, for the reason you stated, but have you checked out the Republican base lately? They are creationists, evangelists, Mormons, people who want abortion to be constitutionally banned - and if that's not interfering, I don't know what is. The new school Republicans, the Palin fans, etc. are more in favor of children being born to children than education. It's disgraceful.

You're right, and I've been saying this to people for weeks. Republicans do NOT stand for less government, when they try to legislate people's morals, their marriage partners, and what they do with their bodies.

This current Republican party has moved so far to the right that they are unrecognizable from the "glory days" of Reagan.
