Magda Szubanski - Sharon Strzelecki from "Kath & Kim."
Without Sharon, Kath & Kim would be....well....they would still be Kath & Kim, but it would be a lot less funny. The US version of this shit debuts this week and they didn't include the character of Sharon! Instead, Sharon is now male and gay. Butchery!

I don't think it could ever be as good as the original. It's so.... Australian! That's what makes it funny.
But hey, they might have the same luck as The Office, where they adapt it well, and it becomes a great TV show in its own right.
(Before people cry blasphemy on my arse, I will point out that I love the UK Office more than any other show... but I still think the US one is great.)
Looking forward to seeing Molly Shannon as Kath though... not sure about Selma Blair...

Magda Szubanski refused to let the American version adapt Sharon-she created the character and so owns the rights. I'm torn because she's so unique but I seriously don't understand how she out of all the char's could've possibly been translated to US audiences- her fascination with Shane Warne, cricket, netball, footy franks and fat free frouche

How does one see the Australian version? It's not available on dvd in the US, and there are only clips on Youtube.

You can buy the dvds (watch for region encoding shit) or download them via a torrent. Just google: torrent Kath and Kim. Illegal of course, so I'm not advocating it, but if you need help just post back. It's VERY easy once you get the hang of it... so I'm told.

Fortunately, I was able to catch it on IFC or Sundance (I forget which and they are interchangeable to me). Sadly, they seem to not be running it anymore.
Those hilarious bitches also have a show called "Big Girls Blouse" which is running now. I think (??) Kath, Kim and Sharon originated as recurring characters in skits on that show.
