Remembering Mr. Newman
When I told my mother Paul Newman passed away today, she was so upset that she had to get off the phone. When I read the comments here on Dlisted and other websites, people only had amazing things to say about him. Not just nice things, amazing things. Family, friends and co-stars of Paul also expressed their sadness with the world over his death. Robert Redford's statement made me a little teary.
“Paul Newman played many unforgettable roles. But the ones for which he was proudest never had top billing on the marquee. Devoted husband. Loving father. Adoring grandfather. Dedicated philanthropist...Always and to the end, Dad was incredibly grateful for his good fortune. In his own words: 'It’s been a privilege to be here.' He will be profoundly missed by those whose lives he touched, but he leaves us with extraordinary inspiration to draw upon. During this difficult time, we ask for privacy for our family.” - Paul's three daughters with Joanne Woodward: Elinor, Melissa and Claire
"There is a point where feelings go beyond words. I have lost a real friend. My life—and this country—is better for his being in it." — Robert Redford
"It is a real loss not just for me, but all the people in the world who knew him and that he connected with. Paul touched so many lives and mine especially -- we were friends for over 50 years." - A.E. Hotchner, Paul's longtime friend and business partner
"I was blessed to have known him. The world is better because of him. Sometimes God makes perfect people and Paul Newman was one of them." - Sally Field
"Paul was a very fine actor and a really good race driver. But mostly, he personified humanity -- always taking care of those who were less fortunate. For me, this will be his legacy." - David Letterman
"He was my hero." - Julia Roberts
"He set the bar too high for the rest of us. Not just actors, but all of us." - George Clooney
Here's just a few pictures of Paul throughout the years. A class act, a really hot man and a legend in every way!

OKAY AND SHE DOES HAVE A BOX WITH A DANCE BUT YOU CAN'T STOP HER BOOT CLAP WITH A BUTT SLAP!
I was out of the country, so I didn't hear this news until today and it left me speechless, heartbroken and shocked. Paul was a wonderful man in every way and Hollywood and the rest of the world could learn so much from this true artist, family man and humanitarian. I'm sad beyond words.
Do you think he had a Life Alert? I heard a lot of celebs have 1. All the best, Harry
What a class act... so different from the trash that's in Hollywood today.
The White Queen
He was truly a great guy. The only good thing to come of this is that he is no longer in pain. My family wrote to him a good few weeks ago and we got a reply about a fortnight ago from his assistant - our letter had been read to him, we were lucky to get a reply in time and we are in England too. We thanked him for my brother going on one of his "Hole in the wall" camps (in Ireland)as he is being treated for cancer and it was a great break for him. He gave so much to charity, not just money but time too.
Very much appreciated by us, unlikely to be anyone as close to him again. RIP.

"D-Listed is like chicks who hang out together for a long time- they start getting their periods the same day.
All d-listed sluts start to think exactly alike after a while. LOLOLOLOL" Mel-tang!
My brother always says that one of the best times of his life was when he was F1 racing in Canada and spent the day hanging out with Newman Those pictures are plastered all over his office walls
"Schulz-crest, out"
Brainy: that is the kind of shit i love to read. i don't know if i've ever read a single negative thing about him. ever. maybe his movies...but never him.
total class act. all those stupid Hollyweird assholes SHOULD take a page from his book and learn how to be a real human being.
i think i'll watch Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in his honor!
Brainy, that is such a nice story.
I have always admired Paul Newman for many reasons. Most recently for his charitable endeavors. Prior to that I just thought he had great blue eyes, was handsome and was perfect in The Sting and Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid"
I never got to directly meet him, but I was in the pits, (Pit pass for the entire race) at the Indy 500 in 1985. I was standing less than 8 feet away from him. It was hot, very crowded at times and far from glamorous, no shorts or short shirt sleeves allowed in the Pits. I thought it was unbearably hot and Paul Newman was all business and taking it in stride and never asked for special treatment. I am about 35 yrs years younger than him but I felt 50 years older than him that day. I just wanted to find the nearest air-conditioned place!
I do remember he looked over at me, and smiled. I think it was one of the only times in my life I was starstruck. He was older than my Dad, but he seemed timeless.
Wow, what a guy, there are no words.......

Thank you for sharing that, not only did you make me smile (in a nostalgic way) but also paid tribute to who this wonderful man is, because he is, always be.
he is the only person that I know of that I want to be, emulate, become, ...and all I will continue to do is TRY, just like he said, yet he not only tried, he achieved it. His decency, character, loving nature, realness..
I don't have a father, never did, and P.N. made it alright, because I expect nothing less from a father than the man that he was.
it is true he set the bar too high and that's a great thing, we have someone with of all his "things" to look up, to emulate, to respect, to wake up to everyday and try our best.
I can't express how sad I feel, it might sound absurd since I never even had the honor to meet him but it feels like I did, even more like we were extremely close.

such a wonderful story.
One of the few that epitomized (and was) greatness. He will definitely be missed.

Looking at those pictures, I just realized for the first time how much my father looks like Paul Newman!
More actors need to use Paul Newman as an example as he was a great humaniarian and all around wonderful human being.
Between two evils, I always pick the one I never tried before.

Very touching story, thanks for sharing.
A highly evolved human and exemplary aquarian. Lucky girls to have called him dad. Lucky wife to have called him a husband. R.I.P.
This is the kind of legacy everyone aspires to leave behind.

ever since i saw cool hand luke, i've had a serious crush on him. he was a great man and i will miss him.
Ever since I heard this news yesterday, my world has had less of a shine. Mr. Newman was a class act in every way and the world is a sadder place with this tremendous loss. God bless. You are up in heaven now and my grandmother finally gets to realize the dream she never achieved while alive - meeting you.

“If you're playing a poker game and you look around the table and can't tell who the sucker is, it's you.” - Paul Newman
I used to work for a non-profit that was a recipient of Mr. Newman's generosity. We were having a special event for leadership donors and he was on the guest list to be called. No one in the office wanted to call for follow-up on his RSVP because they were too intimidated by his celebrity status. Being a junior person on staff I was designated to do it and was told "you'll probably just get the secretary anyway."
Well I called the company and ask for Mr. Newman and explain why I'm calling. I'm put on hold, and then a man picks up. It was him. He was so gracious and unbelievably kind. He said he received invites to things all the time and no one ever called to see if he was coming and he was touched that my organization was calling and was treating him like a real person. We chatted for about 10 minutes. It turned out he was going to be out of town for the event but afterward he sent a personal note to me and a second gift was enclosed. His note said that he had enjoyed being treated like everyone else, because he was JUST like everyone else, but had just been incredibly fortunate in life. He asked me to call him every year moving forward because if his schedule allowed he and his wife would love to visit and learn more about how their gift was being put to work. He included his home number so I could contact his wife as well.
Now seriously, I always thought he was an unbelievably wonderful actor and that he seemed to be such a nice person but that interaction with him was priceless. His public persona as a giving, generous, and kind person was every bit who he was in private. It wasn't the manufactured nonsense we see with all these celebrities today. Robert Redford is right, the world is a lesser place for the loss of such a lovely man.
his Newman-O's are the bomb! i love Paul Newman and he totally was the best kind of person. he rocked.
MK, a very well-done tribute to Paul Newman.
see, I didn't take clooney's comments as that twatty.I read it as, yes, he was a brilliant actor, but he was so much more than that, and its a hard precedent to follow. Did anyone notice an especially large smug cloud yesterday?

Damn, such a beautiful man inside and out. Goodnight, sweet man.
I think I'll go out and get some Newman's Own Pretzels and some Limeade.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have something in my eye...*sniff*
Damn, This man was the hotness, even looked better in his mid to late forties than he did in his "prettier" younger days. Clooney and Pitt do not compare to his acting ability.
50 years of marriage in Hollywood? Unheard of. Take a look at a REAL man Clooney and Pitt who can commit to ONE woman. He seemed to be a man who perhaps started off as not perfect but learned through tradgedy (such as the drug overdose of his son). He really reached out to help people in his older years. Its called developing character. I hope more men in Hollyweird can learn from his example.
This is the way a life should wrap up - at a good old age, with a probably wild youth, then solid work life and family, and using what you earned to help others.
Not a saint - but an admirable human being.
Well done, Mr. Newman.
im still so in shock over his death. i am glad he lived a long life and hope he didnt suffer too much at the end. i'm happy he was able to be with his loved ones when he passed away.
what a man! classy, faithful, generous, and the hottest man ever! i watched cat on a hot tin roof last night and i cried thinking this man was gone. may he rest in peace! we'll always have your blue eyes and your salad dressing! lol!

Mr. Newman made the world a better place for having been in it, the thumbnail of him with the kids painting is what epitomizes what he loved best. having grown up in a world with his films, we knew greatness when we saw it and know the difference in films now.Thank you sir for sharing your many many gifts.
RIP Mr. Newman...<3
Why was Clooney Tunes quoted? He is the antithesis of Mr. Newman. None of these Hollywood twats today will ever come close to having the impact that Paul made on the world. And, he did with quiet integrity and modesty with no hint of arrogance. RIP, Mr. Newman.
He actually came into our little hole in the wall restaurant back in his racing days. He was soft spoken and very gracious. I was surprised, like I always am, at how small movie stars are in real life, but his eyes were just as strikingly blue as they are in every picture. We were all shocked that a movie star of his caliber would be visiting our place of employment, believe me, it is a story I tell my children!
A very sad passing indeed.
He said this- why don't we have actors of his class anymore?
I'm a supporter of gay rights. And not a closet supporter either. From the time I was a kid, I have never been able to understand attacks upon the gay community. There are so many qualities that make up a human being... by the time I get through with all the things that I really admire about people, what they do with their private parts is probably so low on the list that it is irrelevant.

"He set the bar too high for the rest of us. Not just actors, but all of us." - George Clooney
The bar Paul Newman set was indeed "too high" for pretentious George and his retarded peers to meet, but only because they're too stupid and too self-obsessed to even try to act like humans.

Well said madam. I would also like to add gave a hell of a lot more to charity than Clooney's equally dumb mate and his baby mama but failed to see the need to have his mug all over the news whenever he so much as farted a few pence to a good cause. He did not whore our his children either. Great man, RIP.

I am still in shock. R.I.P. Paul. He was such a handsome man!

I will miss those eyes.
Rest well dear Paul.
this makes me so sad, he was perfect: an amazing actor, gorgeous, funny, kind, a true humanitarian, the list goes on. There will never be a greater man, he did some really great things, it makes me so sad that he is gone. He was the ultimate human being
He was truly, truly beautiful. R.I.P. Mr Newman.
The world just got a little colder. Hot in every way, especially as a human being. Today's "stars" should take a lesson in quiet dignity.
A beautiful human being who was so full of love, compassion, hope, and the unquenchable urge to help so many less fortunate.
RIP, kind sir.
You are missed! :)

I really liked Paul Newman. One of my favorite movies is "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". It stars him and Elizabeth Taylor. He was perfection in that movie--so good looking and so solid. He will be missed.
Great post. We knew he was dying and yet, it's so sad. This was a real star in every sense.
