Travis Barker And DJ AM Critically Injured After Fatal Plane Crash
Travis Barker and DJ AM were critically injured after a small Learjet crashed during takeoff in Columbia, South Carolina. 3 men and 1 women were killed. Officials confirmed to NBC that two crew members and two passengers were killed. The names of the deceased have not been released.
Travis was taken by ambulance to a burn center in Augusta, GA. DJ AM was airlifted to the same burn center. They are both in critical condition.
Last night, Travis and DJ AM performed with Perry Farrell and Gavin DeGraw. It's not known if Perry or Gavin were on the same flight.
A spokesperson for the FAA said the Lear 60 was bound for Van Nuys, CA before midnight on Friday with six people on it. Air-traffic controllers reported seeing sparks. They said the plane went off the runway and crashed on a nearby road.
Condolences to the family and friends of the those who lost their lives. Good thoughts to Travis and DJ AM and their families.
UPDATE: Perry Farrell's manager confirmed to MTV News that Perry was not on the plane.
UPDATE II: Gavin DeGraw's publicist confirmed to People that Gavin was not on the plane. MSNBC reports that the female pilot, Sarah Lemmon, and the male co-pilot, James Bland, died in the crash.
UPDATE III: - MSNBC confirmed that 29-year-old Chris Baker of Studio City, CA was one of the passengers who died in the crash. Chris, who is known as "Little Chris," was Travis' assistant. One male passenger still hasn't been identified.
UPDATE IV: A witness who was driving down the highway saw two men, presumably Travis and DJ AM, taking off their clothes and trying to extinguish themselves. The two men told the witness that four other people were on the plane.
UPDATE V: 25-year-old Charles Still of Riverside, CA has been identified as the fourth victim of the crash. Charles was Travis' bodyguard.
UPDATE VI: TMZ reports that DJ AM's face has been severely burned and is being treated right now. Travis is expected to survive, but was burned from the waist down. Chris Baker, Travis' assistant who died in the crash, was a newlywed and his wife recently had a baby.
UPDATE VII: The National Transportation Safety Board held a press conference and gave a few more details about the crash. They said the jet overran the runway, hit a few lights and an antenna, crashed through a fence and careened across the highway next to the airport. The jet crashed into an embankment where it caught on fire.

No more updates? Too bad. I want to go back to bed (I'm a lazy bum, I know) but I have to wait for the friggin' carpet guys to get here. I hate it when repair men, cable guys or other people of that nature tell you "we'll be there between 8am and 2pm like you have nothing better to do than sit there waiting for them. I know they have other jobs to do and they don't know how long that shit's going to take, but I really wish they wouldn't make me wait all day.
Okay, rant over.

You reminded us beautifully that a prayer/ healing thoughts is all that's needed for this...The reality you presented is horrible.

I'm having a hard time caring, but I feel bad for their families. Yes, I'm a heartless bitch.

Spacegirl -- you summed up just why I think the dead in this incident are luckier than the living. I'd rather die than go through burn treatment. Survival at that cost doesn't seem like a victory to me.
OH PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAASEEEEE girlfriend, if the time comes you'll be pleading for life, everyone does!!! Human survival! I'd rather be limbless than dead!
Would this be a good time to mention that I had second degree burns on my left hand due to someone else's mistake, and that I still have the scars, ten years later? I know it might seem trivial, but I do know just how much it hurts.

Aubrey, your post listed exactly why I'll never fly in a private plane. Too much shit flying under the radar (no pun intended).

WHAT? Randy Travis injured? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
This is for you big boy, be strong!!
There may not be a Superbowl in 2083
Cars and trains and video games
Will all be history
The world just keeps on changin'
Things come and then they go
Nothin' lasts forever except one thing I know
(chorus)
There'll always be honky tonk
with a jukebox in the corner
And someone crying in their beer
And one old hanger-oners (???)
And a lady looking lonely
From a losing love affair
Yeah, there'll always be a honky tonk somewhere
Yeah, there'll always be a honky tonk somewhere
There may be factories on the moon
And farming out in space
It seems there's nothin' here on earth
That somethin' won't replace
But as long as there's a broken heart
There'll be a place to go
Where good ole boys meet good ole girls
And the wine and music flow
This is Tragic! But we can celebrate the great performance he had before the Crash

Well, to all of you who think it is unfortunate that Travis Barker and DJ AM survived, what they are about to go through is nothing short of hell.
They haven't said the extend of the burn injuries, but the fact that AM was burned on his face suggests significant lung damage due to smoke inhalation. Facial burns are always considered severe. He will most likely be hooked up to what can be described as an oscillating ventilator to help remove gunk from his lungs. These things shake the torso around in the most unnatural and violent of ways. The patient must be on paralytics due to the unnatural rhythm of the breaths from the ventilator.
Barker has burns from the waist down. Burns to the groin area are also considered severe.
During a clinical rotation, I spent a day in one of the top burn centers in the country. The work they do is amazing, but the hell the patients have to go through, I wouldn't wish upon anybody. No amount of painkillers can fully relieve the excruciating pain of the twice-daily dressing changes and wound debridement. Many of the patients suffered injuries due to their own idiocy. However, I would not wish what they are going through on my worst enemy. I sometimes wondered if these people ever wished that they were dead instead of going through that hell. If you spent a day in a burn center, you might have a little more empathy for Travis Barker and DJ AM.
I feel terrible for everyone, whether they made it our not. I'm sure these two will not be the same after this. I wouldn't be.

I've never liked these two, but I still would never have wished this on them. How terrible it will be for them to know that 4 others died and they were the only two to make it. And it will be a terrible, long recovery for them.

Alright, I'm going to be a callous bitch, and risk pissing off everyone, but is it wrong that I really don't feel all too torn up about DJ AM and Travis Barker? I feel bad about the pilot and his family, and all the other people, but these two, not so much. I think I'll save my sympathies for people who deserve it better like the other (deceased)victims, and the 34 people who were killed last night in Islamabad in a bombing, rather than these two drug using wastes of organic matter. I know, I'm probably going to hell, but I just can't garner any sad feelings about these two. And I am not dissing burn victims and their families at all, my prayers go out to them

I'm gonna have to reserve a spot in hell and cosign. What's unfortunate is that these useless idiots are the ones who survived. How the fuck did that happen? *waits for lightning to strike*
Fuck! I've been dlisted deprived for a long-ass time due to work overload and the first thing I read is this! My heart goes out to the families of the victims. As for these two, I've never liked them, but I holeheartedly wish they have a prompt recovery. _______________________________________________

Speaking of DJ AM, I next to nothing about whether or not he’s a “goof-off” or a “douchebag,” as some here say, but I DO know he’s a mind-blowingly talented DJ. He spins music like a natural genius, this guy.
Once in a while, they’ll play stuff of his on 103.1, and listening to it, you never want the set to end. DJ AM’s got that gift of knowing & feeling music and beats, putting them together seamlessly; he really is a fantastic DJ. He’s one of the best of his kind in the world right now, IMO.

Out of everyone on the plane, these two lived. Sounds like they have pretty severe burns though. Hoping these two realize how lucky they are to be alive and hopefully will take this as an opportunity to do something good.

It's amazing, isn't it? The two people who had the plane chartered for them in the first place, Travis Barker and DJ AM, are the sole survivors. What a strange coincidence..

Sorry to hear about your step-dad. Thankfully, there are so many advance treatments nowadays, and I'm sure that once stem cell research is explored, they should be able to find even better methods of treatment. Can you imagine what they'll be able to do once they figure out how to turn on the hibernating gene in humans that can better improve regeneration, and even regrow limbs and skin faster than ever?

I just read that there was communication between the flight crew and ATC right after lift-off. I wonder if the black box/flight data recorder will contain useful info.
It sounds like a mechanical problem to me, not pilot error.. Who knows? I guess we'll see. The problem with chartered and private jets is that they aren't looked at as closely by the FAA-- as commercial planes.
That's why there are so many private plane crashes and not very many commercial jet plane crashes... at least in the USA.

My heart goes out to their families.I hope that the healing process goes in their favor.
My step dad was an engineer for a frozen foods manufacturing plant..and one day(about 10 years ago)he was repairing an ammonia tunnel, and a spark ignited&there was a huge backdraft. He burnt half of his face&had to go through debridements.
Now you can't even tell that it happened.
So I'm just saying, there is hope.

I think the tendency is to sympathize with two groups of people: 1) those in our own, personal lives who are going through something tragic; and 2) people whose tragedies are well-publicized. That can be the people in TX, Barker and AM, or people in the local paper, even.
Most people, other than that, don't spend a lot of time thinking about the misfortune of others. If you tried to do so, you'd never be doing anything else. Doesn't make either group more or less deserving of sympathy.
That said, the media could do a bit better job reporting on the 'regular people' (e.g. those killed/displaced by the hurricane) versus celebrities... although they know what most of America really wants, so I guess it's not even entirely their faults.

I love you. You love me. We're a happy family. With a great big hug and a kiss from me to you. Won't you say you love me toooooooooo. BARNEY ROCKS!
I can't even imagine the hell they're going through for burn treatment -- everything I've read about it is horrific. I don't mean to be heartless when I say the dead are probably better off -- they're not suffering, although their families are (especially Chris Baker's family, with his new wife & child).
Sadness all around.

That might be right but I still think he has a loyal "under 18" crowd that flock to his site because it is so ridiculously immature and retarded. He's 30 yrs old and his blog looks like it was created by a 13 year old..what a joke.
They eat up his fkn stupid, immature captions that he posts on the pictures he STEALS from other sites.
Tweens and teens still go onto that site. If you ever read the comments section on any of his posts - you will know that a bunch of 14/15/16 year olds are posting it up on there.

Even if they are "goof off musicians" as you proclaim, does that really matter? A human suffering is a human suffering. I like to live in a world where we can feel safe, and bad things do not happen, but it doesn't exist. But what I can do is see the tragedies of the world and hope for the best. For them, as well as the victims of wars, hurricanes, disease, famine, etc.
Does that make us "hollywood" sympathizers, no...just humans.
Being severely burned is probably the most excruciating suffering that a human can experience. I feel sorry for these two dudes(even though they are the tooliest of tools)
@ woodhorse, that rant wasn't really geared towards you... and please don't get me wrong, I am not an unfeeling asshole. I just have a difference of opinion and I can't fake sympathy. Maybe I'm just too honest?

I feel terrible for Travis Barker's children right now. They must be devastated :( And I don't know if DJ AM had any children or a partner, but his family must be torn up with grief and worry. Poor Travis' assistant. His baby is going to grow up without him :(

Fuck riding in small planes. I have two friends who lost their fathers (in separate incidents) because of small plane accidents. This isn't the first time something like this has happened.
-- I hear that. I mean, just look at how many musicians have been killed that way... Buddy Holly, Big Bopper, Richie Valens, Ricky Nelson, half of Skynyrd, Aaliyah, John Denver, Stevie Ray Vaughan (sob), etc...
And the musician segment of the population, while more likely to ride in small planes than the average person, is still pretty slim.
I don't give a shit about Barker or AM, but it's very sad about the 4 who were killed. Tragic.
(P.S. I HATE planes, even big ones, and now that ticket prices have quadrupled I'm glad to have an excuse to rent a Prius and drive the 700 miles to see my family @Xmas instead of flying! Hate flying!)
