Palin is the poster child for bad parenting and why "abstinence" doesn't work. Honestly, I wish someone had aborted her.

Before I get set on fire by all of you my American fellows, no, I will not issue a statement about your politics or candidates, 1) because I am not American -not even North American and 2) because I would be talking out of my ass since I know little to nothing about American politics.

But I do know about teen pregnancy, and I was once a pregnant teenager. If you will, I am pro-life (fancy title to say I think that having an abortion just because you don't want to deal with it is murder). But I am not one of those angry activists or whatever, in fact if you want to do it go ahead, I do not expect people to apply to my politics, and I do agree with abortion in cases such as rape, incest or if the child will have a shitty life due to some illness.
Sadly, I was 17 when this happened, and I was there to open my legs (my case was an accident, condom broke) and the father of the child was there to make the sperm donation. Again difference is I had finished high school 1 year before that and had no problems attending college pregnant; I never considered abortion because I was there to make it, therefore I was there to raise it. End of story, but well I miscarried, so I take it someone else took care of the abortion part? I don't know. The point is that NO, Jamie Lynn or this other kid or whoever, they're not to blame for teenage pregnancies, but as I read on different comments, parading your pregnant teenage daughter and her disaffected fiancee to build your political platform henceforth glorifying the situation, that does in fact put you to blame...not exactly for teenage pregnancies...but most likely for being a twat. And again, no, I am not issuing a statement about proverbial American politics, please don't get that part wrong.

She did remind me, however, that you could still get a venereal(sp?) disease and a bad reputation to boot. So I listened to her advice, didn't bed-hop too much and dodged the V.D. and pregnancy bullet! Whew!!

In all honesty, I think that kind of thing will work itself out over time - it's just a step in the learning process.

To be fair, I think parents are struggling these days. During WWII, babies REALLY became accessories, hence the development of scheduled feeding, cribs, playpens and formula. Kids were really at the bottom of the totem pole because we had a war to fight.

There's also industry and technology and economics...all of these come before kids. Look at any government budget and it becomes painfully obvious.

So its been, until recently, ok to smack your kids around, keep them lined up and penned in like sheep and force them into oppression. It was for their own good.

So then we learned, if you treat little children like animals they can grow to be pretty fucked up. AND this is the land of freedom, after all - don't kids deserve some of that? They do but it doesn't mean they don't need guidance.

The US government is one of the worst examples of how to apply discipline and guidance while being kind and generous at the same time. It's not impossible but you do have to slow down. You have to actually LOOK at the person your dealing with, LISTEN, and take time to THINK about the best way to handle things. Parents are told to be gentler with their children but then they have no time and no energy...and they still feel oppressed themselves.

PS. You don't really need to hit kids (sometimes, if they're hitters, it's a good way to show action and reaction...) If you really REALLY pay attention when an issue comes up, you can usually talk it through - a LOT easier than adults. And it's ok to get angry - that's just human and they have to grow into a world full of humans - just to be rational about your anger (so they can learn how too).But what you can't talk through you have to demonstrate - kids need training and they can't do that for themselves.

Exactly. I am against abortion but think that people should have the choice to have one if they feel that's what is truly needed. I waffle on that one, but I'm not one to take someone's choice away from them - you have no idea what they've been through!
That being said, I think that late-term abortions are horrible, heinous, horrendous -- there should be, i think, some restrictions placed on that.

We can classify people by their choices but every situation is different. I don't think there is a fill-in-the-blank answer that will fit everyone. Even as a prochoicer, I don't condone using abortion as birth control and I have issues with terminating in the third trimester. But it's really easy for me to say that when I haven't been in the position to need it.

I do hate that Jamie-Lynn and Bristol are the public examples of teen pregnancy. They have access to what most pregnant teens don't- MONEY.

I agree and disagree--while I agree that you can't blame Jamie Lynn for teen pregnancy, you can certainly blame the media for recently attempting to instill in our brains that getting pregnant while you're still a minor is acceptable. Yes, back in the day it was a hush-hush situation if a teen was impregnated and unwed, not to mention the consequences oftentimes prevented many underage kids from making the same mistake. It happened, but it was never acceptable. Shit always happens, in all aspects of life--but why should we welcome thousands upon thousands of mistakes with open arms? And they ARE mistakes. I'm tired of hearing, "well, girls used to get married and have children at a young age." Enough. We were supposed to have evolved immensely since then. People live longer due to breakthroughs in medicine and anyone can get a college education. Teens should be enjoying their youth instead of trying to grow up too quickly because once the real world hits you like a ton of bricks the fun's over.
No, Jamie Lynn is not to blame except when it comes to having ruined her own life--however, the people who are putting her in the spotlight as some kind of hero certainly are. What are we trying to tell our kids? That it's ok if they get pregnant because someone will always be there to take care of them and give them praise? Sorry, but if I was stupid enough to get preggo as a teen my mother would've slapped me ten ways til Tuesday and my father would've disowned me.

@ Angel - Yes, I agree with your points also. Teenage pregnancy should not be glorified or excused. It's up to the parents, teachers, and other well-informed adults to at least TRY and tell the raging-hormone teens to keep it in their pants, at least until they graduate college and/or have financial security within their grasps....but like i said, teenage raging hormones are sometimes hard to control. Many teen girls are so fertile that even with the various birth-control methods available, well, you know - shit happens!

But then again, some of the older sluts (Skankelina, Whoredonna etc.) have had babies out of wedlock and that seems to add to the young girls' glorification of thinking that it's ok to get pregnant before marriage or at least until their in their 20s for God's sake!
