I think people have given Michael Phelps more than enough credit. I think people are losing perspective in whats important in the world over all. Yes his achievements have been great in the athletic world, but how important is that to mankind, nature, in what form per se. And as far as his "inspiring" other people to be fit by his great supposed selflessness. He just promoted corn flakes which has double the sugar, and less fiber than the healthier options because they wouldnt pay him enough. So are the kiddies you mentioned before whom were supposedly suppose to get fit because of Phelps being helped once again by his $elflessness now? PLEASE ! Its once again making more out of shit than what it is. He is a great athelete, not a saint. And I have even said before, I am happy for him he has achieved his goals, I am happy he represents this country, and I love to hear stories of people who as kids had a goal and after years of hard work achieve those goals, hell fucking yes I would be proud and happy for them. and interviews when asked for his prep he hasnt mentioned "to inspire others to try harder", but he has about it being something he always wanted, and like i said before to prove other people wrong that he couldnt do it. I think its apparent what constitutes a hero is different from person to person. I think he is a great athelet who inspires others, but its way to early in his career to throw titles like hero at him, hero for what ? doing what he loves doing and become famous and rich in the process??? then all of hollywood should be a hero as well. Doesnt mean he wont be a hero in the future, his wins have created a pedalstill for him to do great works in the future. Maybe he will help others and be a hero then. But at this point in time all he has done is for his own glory, which as I have said there aint nothing wrong for working hard for what you want, the hardwork is admirable, but does it really consitute a hero?, no. What defines a hero to ME is not based on what the folks at Merriam Websters penned or anyone else, I can actually formulate an opinion sans internet help. I think, a hero is someone who does an act which in some way HELPS someone, and in the process either risking somethinig themselves to accomplish the task, or doing it without it benefitting themselves in any way. Its like my beef with actors who donate money yeah they give money to charity and some people benefit from it. BUT theyre also being placed in a lower tax bracket and get free "look at how good a person I am" publicity, so no I would not call those people heros. Phelps is the same way, he has even said that before the matches he read articles that said he couldnt achieve 8 for 8. SO he placed those articles in his locker to motivate him to win to prove them wrong. So your telling me a "hero" is someone who works real hard at swimming in a pool, so that he can become rich and prove people wrong? Yeah great fucking hero. I even LIKE Phelps, he seems alright in his interviews, and he is an unbelievable swimmer and competitor, but to put him in the realms of real heroes like Mother Teresa or 911 people who actually acted *selflessly* then I could give a fuck what Merriam Webster has to say, I personally would not say he is a hero. And you can call him a hero if you wish, thats your decision, and I respect it, but like I said I just simply dont agree with it, because its exagerrating his achievements.
