Standing Tall
24-year-old Angel Pantoja Medina of Puerto Rico apparently told his family that when he passes away, he wants to stand upright through his wake. Well, his family granted his wish. Dressed in a Yankees cap, sunglasses and a gold chain, Angel was mourned by family members while standing tall in his mother's living room for 3 days.
The funeral home told The Associated Press that they used a special embalming treatment to keep him standing. His brother said, "He wanted to be happy, standing."
The police are currently investigating Angel's death. His body was found underneath a bridge last Friday.
I guess it's not that strange. I mean, I want half of my ashes stuffed into one of Shauna Sand's exquisite lucite heels. I want the other half scattered along Robertson Blvd. That way I will always be with international supermodel Phoebe Price. Oh and save a line of my ashes for Amy Wino. I want her to snort me up, Keith Richards-style.

Your Mom Ate The Taco: I nearly went to mortuary school. The main deterrent was that the college, which is one of the top mortuary schools in the US, only offers classes during the daytime, and I wasn't able to find suitable shiftwork.
I have a small library of death books. And yet I'm not morbid, or a goth, or anything like that. It's not anything I feel like going into detail about, but I always looked at it as very necessary and noble work.

What, memorial photography? :) I have a book called "Sleeping Beauty" by Twelvetrees Press, the collection of memorial photographs. The babies freak you out at first, but there's a caption that says that before birth certificates, and when the infant mortality rates were much higher, the photographs were often the only evidence that the baby had lived. In that context, the baby photographs become poignant.

Memento Mori may not freak the two of us out, but it does give the majority the heebie jeebies because we exist in a society where death has become a taboo subject. Whereas you and I will observe a daguerrotype of a dead infant propped to look alive without so much as a flinch, others have to muster a plethora of strength to merely glimpse at it--but that's just me. I'm fascinated by the concept of death, the details of its physical process, and the rituals, superstitions, and beliefs that have been connected to it throughout the centuries. It wasn't merely the Memento Mori from the 19th century that I felt was worth mentioning--it's the more bizarre practices in which some people/families would partake that truly fascinate me.

The fact that your "friend" died at the age of 24 yo but also had an idea that he was going to die early by asking ahead of time to be emballed in a standing up position says a lot about someone's character! (Besides having a disease) young kids don't think about that kind of stuff unless they live a life of danger i.e. drugs/gangs/violence. You can remember your "friend" as a great person all you want but when people such as fatmartha point out the obvious don't get upset. Facts are facts and this kid was no angel. Also I get creeped out by wakes, I can only imagine how I would feel seeing a dead relative standing up like a mummy in my living room. *Shivers*

I can't stand funerals. Imagine how fucked up I would be had it taken place in my home for three days! The way a dead body looks is so unnatural, REALLY including that one.
I have a fascination with death but at the same time, I'm very necrophobic. I'm interested in the decomposition process, but it's not something I'd actually like to SEE. I admit to reading about it when I'm bored. It's so much more fascinating when you're reading about it in a book and it's just there in your imagination.
I remember about last year or so after Anna Nicole Smith's death, there were these magazines with her dead body featured on the front cover. I'll always envision the bluish-grey mold...I seriously felt my stomach drop.

Noelegy, there was a story in my local newspaper about a photographer who has a business where she takes the photos of infants that were stillborn or died shortly after their birth. They pose in the arms of their parents in portraits that are tastefully done. It's gotta be a tough job to take the photos, but what a wonderful thing for the parents to have--at least some memory of their baby that they only were with for a short time.
