Christina Applegate Is Cancer-Free!

Over two weeks ago, we got the sad news that Christina Applegate was battling a form of breast cancer. Well, she's in the clear! In an interview airing on "Good Morning America" tomorrow, Christina said, "I'm clear. Absolutely 100 percent clear and clean. It did not spread. They got everything out, so I'm definitely not going to die from breast cancer." Thank Buck Bundy!

Christina was able to catch it early thanks to a doctor ordered MRI. She said that when she first found out she "was so mad and I -- I just remember I was -- I was just shaking - and then also immediately, I had to go into... 'take-care-of-business-mode,' which was ... I asked them, 'What do I do now? What - what is it that I do? I get a doctor, I get a surgeon, I get an oncologist? What do I do?"'

She quickly started calling around to find someone to teach her how to live macrobiotically. Does that mean she can only eat seeds, grass and berries? Can you at least drink booze on a macrobiotic diet? It's made out of natural shit, right? Just say yes!

UPDATE: Christina said she underwent a double mastectomy, even though the cancer was detected it only one breast. She said, "My decision, after looking at all the treatment plans that were possibilities for me, the only one that seemed the most logical and the one that was going to work for me was to have a bilateral mastectomy. So basically I had a prophylactic double mastectomies. I didn't want to go back to the doctors every four months for testing and squishing and everything. I just wanted to kind of be rid of this whole thing for me. This was the choice that I made, and it was a tough one." She didn't undergo chemotherapy.

Phew! I'm happy to hear that Christina is going to be alright. Let's all celebrate by getting off of our fat asses and doing the "Bundy Bounce" in her honor. And don't forget to say, "The newwwwwww Allante" while doing it! Clip below (skip to 9:18):

Being estrogen dominant or having excess estrogen puts you at risk for breast cancer. It's very easy to test for this and it is a #$%@ing crime that medical doctors don't do it. I just got back from my gyno and he felt me up - that was his protocal for breast cancer. I'm not really overweight but I have gotten a little puffier over the years. Found I had excess estrogen. Just balance it out - usually with progesterone - and your risk of cancer goes down. Also, test for low vit d - also a risk for cancer. Supplement, go out in the sun if you're low. Again, reduces your chances of cancer. Osteopaths and alternative docs know all about this stuff - but of course the insurance system does not cover them. Sick people generate profits!!! Cancer is big, big , big busine$$. Not saying cancer is 100% preventable but there are things you can do to lower the risk. I feel terrible for Christina A. what a tough, heartbreaking decision to have to make.

I had it at her age and had a mastectomy also. But because I was so young, my oncologists made me do chemo as well because there could be microscopic cells in the body. It's now 11 years later and so far so good.

When you're pre-menopausal age, it's risky to do only a mastectomy.

Married With Children is an all time great in my books.
I too wish Christina all the best...that blonde slut has shown a lotta guts attacking that shit head on as she has. I hope she has caught it all and lives happily & healthily for at least another 60 years.

All the blessing to Ms. Applegate on her recovery, I've known of cancer cases among friends and it's very hard on everyone, have lost some of them to it.

The experience it's something you just can't get at the same level of the person with it.

Good she went for the double mastectomy, and yes, if she wants/needs to, she can get boobs back via reconstruction surgery (nips and everything).

M.E.'s picture

Wow. She had both her boobs removed. I can't imagine.

I hope she remains cancer free.

Breast cancer runs in my mother's family. My grandmother just underwent a double mastectomy and is going through chemo. We (my mom, 3 sisters, and I) are planning on getting the gene test done this year, and if I test positive, I will definitely get my breasts lopped off. It may not be a 100% prevention to cancer, but it's the best I (or christina applegate) can hope to do given how strongly this type of cancer runs through family trees. I wish her all the best.

"I hate to be cynical or a dick, but breast cancer can spread microscopically in ways that can't be found by even the best tests, even when it's at a very early stage. There is therefore NO way to tell whether she's cancer free or not..."

When saw the headline, saying she is "100% Cancer Free" I thought, who are they kidding? There is no way to know if she is cancer free. My friend's mother was "free" of her breast cancer for *years* when it suddenly came back and, unfortunately, was fatal.

I wish Christina the best of luck, hopefully she really will be cancer free.

There is something important left out of this story that I just read about at a news site. Christina is braver than we all realized. She feels she is cancer free because, even though her cancer was caught early and was only in one breast, she elected to have a double mastectomy. It seems her biggest reasoning is that she has tested positive for the BRCA 1 gene, which dramatically increases the risk of getting breast cancer. From what I have read, she also has a cervical cancer gene.

She states she will be getting reconstructive surgery in the coming weeks.

My sister had this gene testing done because all the women on my mothers side of the family got breast cancer, although it was post-menapausal. My mother died of lung cancer at 57, before the ages that her mother and sisters got cancer.

She, and in turn the rest of the family, does not have this gene.

Best wishes to Christina. In today's Hollywood society, I feel she is extra brave for taking this drastic step. I wish her good health and happiness.

Thank you. I am encouraged at the number of people in here whose lives have not been touched by this, but you join Christina in denial. The truth is that the doctors don't see any cancer right now. It could still be there, and in fact it is likely to come back, no matter what she does about her diet.

Meanwhile, I thought the real stats were that 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer, not 8 in 10?

Good for Christina. I watched the whole clip. God, "Married With Children" was a great show. How about the great Tina Louise in the cameo as the casting agent?

"This ain't rock n roll. This is genocide!"

How can a macrobiotic diet help anyone be cancer free with all the pollution going around? I wonder.

Anonymousss, "increase the risk" doesn't mean "cause". And the increase isn't that amazing. If every woman were as skinny as a rail, breast cancer rates would be less, but only by 20%. That means eight out of ten women would still get breast cancer. Not only is there no way to tell which eight out of ten that would be, not only is it ludicrously, laughably unrealistic, but having a little extra weight actually protects against early cardiac death. So you trade lower breast cancer rates for higher cardiac death rates: not much of a trade, unless you're just looking for an excuse to put other women down for being fat, that is.

The best way we know to reduce breast cancer rates would be for every woman to have at least three children by their sixteenth birthday. That would cut breast cancer rates in half (which means that five out of ten women would still develop it). It would also reduce women's life expectancies overall more than higher rates of breast cancer would, since millions of them would be thrust into abject poverty.

There is NO way to make sure you won't get this. It's mainly chance. Accept that and stop judging others.

****************

I wasn't judging. I merely answered someone's question.

NonnyMouse's picture

That should be, of course, "eight out of ten women who would have got cancer originally". Sorry, but the idea that if you do everything right you'll never get sick is a pet peeve of mine. It's a form of defense - people don't want to think about their own deaths - but it's horrendously hurtful to those who have had health problems, and it's ultimately self-deceiving and self-destroying.

I'm not trying to be a bitch..but..what does being fat or skinny have to do with cancer? It can strike anyone, no matter their size or age.

*************************

Estrogen is stored in fat, so being heavy increases a woman's risk of breast and reproductive cancers.

NonnyMouse's picture

And breast cancer is worse than other cancers in that if you survive most cancers by five years you're almost certain not to have a recurrence. Breast cancer can recur twenty or thirty years down the line.

So I hope it gives her peace to have heard this, but whoever told it to her is full of shit.

I saw the enquirer or another paper one (you know, the non glossy ones that always lie)and it said she had a double mastectomy, so maybe that explains the speedy recovery? It's sorta mean of them, if she wants personal things unsaid about her cancer then no need to tell us like it's a big juicy secret to put on the front page. I personally think she has comedic talent and I do like her so I was super sad when I heard.

By the way - nice to see a vintage Tia Carrere in that clip. The *cough* non-bulky version of her.

I hate to be cynical or a total dick, but is it possible her announcement and rapid recovery just happened to coincide with her work for the breast cancer charity? Just a bit of PR going on, perhaps?
**********************************

I don't think that's dickish. Actually, I think it's true. I don't think Christina would have publicized it if it wasn't for the event coming up, necessarily.

It sounds like she's been dealing with it awhile. It just seems like a rapid recovery for the way we heard about it.

Well, that is some spifftacular news, indeed!

I just found out that one of my friends from high school was a breast cancer survivor. She "kicked cancer's ass," as she put it, two years ago, apparently since the last time I saw her. I felt sort of sad and useless and embarrassed to learn this. The price of not staying in touch.

I know this sadness. Last year, a girl I knew in HS died of breast cancer. I always thought about dropping her a line (she was in town and one of the best people I ever knew) but I never did. *sigh*

Two weeks since she issued a statement. Nowhere did she say when it was diagnosed, when treatment started or if she had finished her treatment.

Good for Christina!

Hekki's picture

That's great news. I wish the absolute best for her, because that's important. But like other posters here said, she's going to be looking over her shoulder the entire time.

I am a nutrition freak, and I am not so hot on that macrobiotic diet. Just my opinion; I think it's way too restrictive and doesn't take into account a person's genetic predispositions (I'd shrivel up and die if I couldn't eat dairy and meat - it's what my forebears ate). But it's got some good aspects and it's certainly healthier than the way most Americans eat, so I can't hate on it too much.

I totally recognized Tia Carrere in that clip too. I forget she's sort of old.

Go in with breast cancer, come out with botox, will modern medicine never cease to amaze me? I think macrobiotic means no alcohol, sorry MK. Those health nuts always cut out the fun stuff!

Your face!

I hate to say it, but breast cancer always comes back. Even if she had a double masectomy, which is what the rumor is, the cancer will return. Breast cancer always does, typically in the bones. It might take 40-50 years, it might take less, but breast cancer always resurfaces somewhere.
