WHAT?!
While watching last week's opening ceremonies of the Olympics, I thought to myself how adorable the little girl was who sang China's national anthem. Adorable with a voice like a precious hummingbird! Well, it turns out the pretty little girl was lie-telling to us all! She lip-synched the whole thing. She's the Zelma Davis of China!
Chinese officials confirmed that they decided at the last minute to pull 7-year-old Yang Peiyi (on the right) from the opening ceremonies, because they felt her teeth were too wonky to represent their country. They replaced her with 9-year-old Lin Miaoke who lip-synched to Yang's voice.
The ceremony's music director said, "The main consideration was the national interest. The child on the screen should be flawless in image, in her internal feelings and in her expression. When we had the dress rehearsals, there were spectators from various divisions, including above all a member of the politburo who gave us his verdict: we had to make the swap." Was Jeff Lewis from Flipping Out the musical director? Harsh!
Peiye claims she wasn't upset after she was told she couldn't perform, "I am proud to have been chosen to sing at all." Peiye is way too nice. I would've sabotaged Miaoke by making the track skip! That way Miaoke would've just stood there, shrugged and danced a jig like Ashlee Simpson.
That wasn't the only fake thing about the opening ceremonies. The 29 fireworks footprints were digitally added later. A cameraman in a helicopter filmed the fireworks as they were happening live, but producers thought the footage might be too shaky.
So what was real?! I actually gave a standing ovation to that shit! I got my lazy ass off of the couch and I never do that! AND I even toasted the TV with my martini. I feel so cheated! I want my money back!

Amen to that. I was horrified when I heard this. Then again, it is not surprising. The Olympics aren't about sports or international "oneness" anymore. It's about proving whose country is better, and who can show off the most. (Michael Phelps-aloonies, take note.)

Maybe people will realize what a shallow shithole that society has become that girls as young as seven years old are being affected by the message this has sent that if you're pretty or cute enough that you're not worth a shit.

The Olympics are a joke now. It's not about the athletes anymore, because if it was they wouldn't be there. I know China's quickly up and coming, but a majority of it is still rural and backwards as fuck. It's a communist country so everything is their way or no way at all. There are no environmental regulations, so now scientists predict that at least 5 Olympians will die or suffer severe respiratory problems. They still toss out girls like yesterday's news paper. And 90% of the country is dirt poor and living in poverty. Hell, it's not that I'm pro having it in America (even though my neighboring NYC put in for a bid to host 08), it's just that I'm anti-China.
Don't get me wrong, I love the people, but as a country they're pretty fucked up. (But the same could easily be said about USA)

What I find disingenuous about this story is that the media could have waited until the end of the Olympics to break this story. Now these two perfectly sweet little girls have been thrust into a whole bunch of crazy.
I'm well aware of China's Human Rights violations, but don't ruin it for the athletes and the zillion opening night performers, crew, the thousands of people who are busting their asses for this historic event.

Thank you for saving me saying some of this: I don't blame the United States neccesarily but yes, the ideal of physical perfection outweighing talent or intelligence has permeated everything. Even the world of young children. I know that in some parts of Europe, artists are still adored for what they bring to the table, not necessarily their looks (which is kinda dumb, anyone can be pretty) but that seems to be changing. Shame.

As a singer, and as a Chinese person, I totally knew that girl wasn't singing when I saw the opening ceremonies. I even said to my boyfriend how Chinese that is, that they got some scary children of the corn "cute" kid to lipsynch the anthem on international t.v. and how fobby that was. I just had NO idea that it would blow up the way it has. I never thought anyone would speak out about it.
This is all over CNN/Headline News....NBC is too scared to mention this on their broadcasts or on their websites. They won't offend the Chinese until they're all back safely in the US.
