Christina Applegate Has Breast Cancer
I always hear the worst news at the start of my day before I have even finished my second cup of coffee. I might just have to pour a little Bailey's in this shit after hearing this news. Christina Applegate's rep confirmed that she's been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Her rep issued this statement: "Christina Applegate was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer. Benefiting from early detection through a doctor ordered MRI, the cancer is not life threatening. Christina is following the recommended treatment of her doctors and will have a full recovery. No further statement will be issued at this time."
First, Christina's boyfriend dies of an overdose and now this?!
Her rep better be telling the truth and Christina better have a full recovery. Not Kelly Bundy. Not her. Buck the Dog and I will howl together in sadness. She'll beat it, I know it.
Christina's mommy is a breast cancer survivor. Because of that, Christina became a spokesperson for Lee National Denim Day, a fundraiser to benefit Women's Cancer Programs.

Why keep this quiet? What if she doesn't want to deal with this by herself? What if she wants to share this with the world so that maybe people won't look at a cancer diagnosis as the *cue scary music* Beginning of the End! Maybe she's terrified and would like to feel like some people are standing with her, sending prayers.
Texting the paparazzi and letting them know where you will be taking your next dump is being an attention whore. Sharing a cancer diagnosis with the world is bravery.

I think it's good that she does publicize this. Think of all the other cancer patients out there that might feel comforted somehow knowing that other people (including even the rich, beautiful and famous!) are not immune to this and are going through the ordeal with a brave face. Especially since she's a spokesperson for a cancer group. I think she can help people more by publicizing her own ordeal. Keeping it a secret kind of makes it look like its shameful.
I can see celebrities actually fearful to tell the public they have cancer because it could limit their roles and perhaps ruin their careers. So kudos to Christina.
I remember when Freddie Mercury was criticized for keeping his AIDS diagnosis a secret until days before his death. So, their damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Scary since she is so young. Growing up she watched her single mom go through breast cancer twice. That had to have an impact on her.

Actually, I tend to agree with MaDalice; if a star handles this type of thing properly, it can be kept quiet. No one knew Edie Falco had breast cancer treatment until after it was over. Same with Cynthia Nixon. I understand the argument that stars speak out in hopes of encouraging others to seek treatment, but I also believe there's a lot of sympathy-seeking and attention-whoring going on, and I don't believe it was really necessary for Christina to publicize this.
That said, I wish her luck. Cancer is a horrible disease and killed one of my favorite writers.

Actually, it's because she's promoting a fundraising event for cancer that she became part of when she was diagnosed. She's hardly an attention whore, I think.
