Christina Applegate Has Breast Cancer

I always hear the worst news at the start of my day before I have even finished my second cup of coffee. I might just have to pour a little Bailey's in this shit after hearing this news. Christina Applegate's rep confirmed that she's been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Her rep issued this statement: "Christina Applegate was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer. Benefiting from early detection through a doctor ordered MRI, the cancer is not life threatening. Christina is following the recommended treatment of her doctors and will have a full recovery. No further statement will be issued at this time."

First, Christina's boyfriend dies of an overdose and now this?!

Her rep better be telling the truth and Christina better have a full recovery. Not Kelly Bundy. Not her. Buck the Dog and I will howl together in sadness. She'll beat it, I know it.

Christina's mommy is a breast cancer survivor. Because of that, Christina became a spokesperson for Lee National Denim Day, a fundraiser to benefit Women's Cancer Programs.

Good thoughts for Christina!

Wishing Christina Applegate the best. My mom just finished treatment for breast cancer. Chemo, bilateral mastectomy, reconstruction, the works. But all is well and today she out on a sailboat in the Gulf riding the wind in front of Edouard.

But everyone should know....she did not ever have a lump and her annual mammograms showed nothing except a wave of disorganized tissue. Docs originally thought it was nothing. One scintimammogram later and we had the cancer diagnosis. It was lobular and docs estimate she has had the cancer for at least 10 years.

If you have family history, look into scintimammograms. Very low incidence of false negative or false positive. If you glow, you know.

My PSA of the day. Keep strong Christina.

Good vibes and positivity to Christina. Love her. And OBVIOUSLY she is going to let the public know she is battling cancer SHE IS A FUCKIN SPOKESPERSON FOR CANCER. God some people really dont get it, why the fuck would someone who supports cancer research keep their own battle with cancer on the hush. Thats idiotic. Get a grip people not everyone does shit for attention and breast cancer is a really awesome attention getter I mean there isnt a chance it can spread or kill her or anything. Ugh.

Don't think of cancer as a death sentence, but also don't assume that a small cancer can't be life-threatening. Breast cancer is unusual in that it can be in the body for up to twenty years before it becomes large enough or dense enough to be discovered by even the best screening methods. That's why they give chemo to women with small breast cancers; a cancer that's been in your body for twenty years has probably spread at least microscopically, and chemo is meant to kill those cells.

I do worry that Christina's publicist's comment about the MRI is going to make women think that MRIs are better at detecting cancer than mammograms. This is not the case - MRIs are far less accurate than mammograms. They are however useful for women who have had implants - if there's a questionable spot on the mammogram near the implant, an MRI can determine that it's not scar tissue or leaked silicone. The only way to know it's cancer, though, is via a biopsy.

I guess a valid arguement for any public figure to publicize having an illness, is they feel either the public will start noticing it affecting their appearance, or they'd rather announce it before the press finds out somehow, because they always do!

I was in the doctors office getting a smear once and I could hear the doc SCREAMING at this one paitent like "you have open, puss filled sores and you know hes giving it to you...why do you keep sleeping him?" She was like sobbing " I dont know, I dont care what I have...I love him...blah, blah blah..." So the doc was like "you have this disease and that diesase that I can see off bat so you might have AIDS messing with him so im gonna have you tested....
It was unreal....

First and foremost, best of luck to Christina.

"If only more celebs were more open about genital warts and herpes, maybe that'd scare the shit out of all the horny teeny-boppers."

ITA. I used to work at an OB/GYN, and the things I saw... One girl thought she was hot shit until she found out she had genital warts, herpes, and was pregnant in the same visit. Another had anal warts that spread to her colon, and we had to send her to a gastroenterologist. Ugh...

I think keeping it secret or being open about it is a personal choice, and I don't begrudge her either, 'cause hey - at the end of the day, she's got fucking cancer. And it seems like the by the time she beats it - and she will, that bitch is a fighter - she'll have raised a lot of money for cancer research. So regardless of what you personally think of Christina Applegate, I don't really see what there is to criticize here. I hardly think her personal life (which ultimately affects no one here) is reason to anonymously talk shit about a cancer patient online. Some respect for Sue Ellen Crandell, please.

Soul - me too, 1998. No family history.

I was Christina's age when I got it. Don't ignore ANY lump - if a doctor tells you it's nothing, go to another doctor. Time is not on your side if it is cancer.

I agree with London Bridge:

When Magic Johnson stated he had AIDS, AIDS awareness grew by leaps and bounds. Now we need Miseralba, Wonky McValtrez, and Derek Jeter to admit they have herpes and it hurts when they walk, pee, or laugh during an outbreak. Then awareness will rise.

Maybe Wonky needs to run for senate.....please, down here in North Carolina.....anyone is better than Elizabeth Dole.

as for christina i am glad she found out early and is recieving treatment. cancer is a horrible thing to go through for both the patient and their famiilies and i wish they'd hurry up and find a fuckin cure already.

And yes, one can be the epitome of health...but as you know, cancer is many times linked to genetics.

TRM, TRUTH in all you wrote. If you know you have a genetic link or predisposition to cancer you definitely have to get checked more than the average person. Cancer happens. Do I want to live forever? No. -But, I'd like to live long enough to enjoy some grandchildren and if I'm lucky maybe even some great grandchildren. Being OLD isn't a death sentence either...people can live long and pretty damned healthy nowadays. Sometimes it's about the choices we make and how we choose to live.

Devore's picture

chemo therapy is no fucking joke.

the radiation treatment wipes people out.

people who have this treatment have no energy and dont want to eat.

the only lesson here is one we always knew, everyday is a valuable one and if you have your physical and mental health you have more than most.

Actually, I tend to agree with MaDalice; if a star handles this type of thing properly, it can be kept quiet. No one knew Edie Falco had breast cancer treatment until after it was over. Same with Cynthia Nixon. I understand the argument that stars speak out in hopes of encouraging others to seek treatment, but I also believe there's a lot of sympathy-seeking and attention-whoring going on, and I don't believe it was really necessary for Christina to publicize this.

That said, I wish her luck. Cancer is a horrible disease and killed one of my favorite writers.

----------?? I work in healthcare and I have to ask--"WHY SHOULD SHE KEEP THIS A SECRET??" Adopting a third world baby? Yeah that's a private family matter. Spreading the word about the improtance of early detection of cancer and other diseases--SHOUT IT from the rooftops! Bravo for Christina! I have a patient now who is only 34 and just suffered a major stroke. He had no idea he had diabetes along with other health issues. We can bash celebs all day but their impact on people can not be denied. Look at what Katie Couric has done to spread the word for early detection of colon cancer. Being that Christina is so young maybe other young folks will have a wake up call and realize youth is not always on our side.

There are people who live perfectly healthy lifestyles and die of cancer (isn't Christina a Vegan?) and in the end it's really about listening to your body, knowing it and when you feel WRONG get your butt to the doctor and get checked out. NO, I'm not promoting emetophobia, I'm just saying that being kind to yourself and your body and being self-AWARE are very important for your overall health.
_________________________________________________________________

The problem with cancer is that one often doesn't feel it. There aren't always lumps or anything until it's too late. And you don't even want to know how many doctors will brush aside symptoms as "nothing wrong". My friend's daughter was losing some weight--doctor says nothing wrong. She gets a bad headache several months later and the doctor tells the family she has a cancerous tumor in her brain and has two months to live!
And yes, one can be the epitome of health...but as you know, cancer is many times linked to genetics.

AMEN to THAT, Devore. Good call. I truly believe in self-recovery and overcoming giant obstacles like cancer is no small feat but it's definitely possible.

I think self-awareness is the biggest key to staying healthy. So often it's easy to neglect ourselves (especially women) and then BAM! -Cancer hits.

it's a serious matter but it's best to NOT think of any cancer as a death sentence.
_____________________________________________________________

Very true, but more than half the people I have known that have been diagnosed with some form of cancer have either died or are going through a lot of heavy duty treatment that has resulted in a lot of side effects. Most of the people I know have had breast cancer--two have died under the age of 35. Even if you do survive, there's a lot of emotional damage because you have to be ever-vigilant because in some cases it returns. Breast cancer is super serious. Early detection is important and I'm glad Christina came out with her diagnosis.
