In boring ass political news, John McCain's stupid new ad compares Barack Obama to Brit Brit Spears and Wonky McValtrex.
If you're going to use footage of Brit Brit, at least use recent video of her looking tore up and carrying a Frapp. Do it right.
And if Obama is like Brit and Wonky, does that mean he doesn't wear panties and is going to give us a crotch shot soon? I'm waiting.....

Guiliani is a spiteful, overrated cunt. Many New Yorkers despised him and as far as reducing crime, that can be attributed to other factors having nothing to do with him. He used September 11th as a stage for his political ambitions.

Anyway, I am a new yorker as well, and I will let you in on a little tid bit, he was hated by most New Yorkers, and then 911 happened, there were some photo ops of him and viola, he can lead our nation? Yes, violent crime has decreased in NYC, but he cannot even take all of the credit -- property values here in NY have skyrocketed to the point where a studio apartment can cost you 1 cool mil to 500k, with maintenance for that little apartment in the thousands. I am sure white collar crime has increased ten fold.

I live on Capital Hill. DC use to be known as Dark City, Murder Capital, Drug Capital etc. Things cleaned up tremendously. It's now one of the top most beautiful cities in the world (OK, I feel this way). But I fear things may be turning around a little. I believe crime will/has increase all over America as the economy goes down the drain and crystal meth grows in the burbs. Our crime has gone up 30%. May, I suggest an alarm system.
I feel for my brown brothers. The metro area has imposed harsher regs on day laborer stops and on other immigration issues. Some live in fear of deportation after living here for decades and raising families.

This is NOT a racial issue. The reason this started was not because of Hispanics, in particular - it started because of the rise in serious crimes. Don't get me wrong, there has always been crime here - we used to be known as "Mob City" But the violence and drugs are completely out of hand, lately. Shootings, etc... used to be major news because they happened so infrequently. Now it's no longer shocking.
How would you like to wake up and find a stranger in your house? That happened to me. I'm lucky I was able to lock myself in my bedroom and call 911. The police were able to apprehend him and cart his drunk, non-citizen, ass off to jail.
We used to be able to leave our doors unlocked and not be afraid to walk the streets. Now, that is not possible. Why is it so wrong to want the same quality of life I had, when I was growing up?

Devil's Advocate: Sometimes illegal immigrants are not criminals. Often the government makes it SO hard for ok people to gain status that they have to live there illegally for a while to get things straightened out. But this is why I think Federal Governments should give more leeway to local governments...so you can have more control over the things that YOU have to deal with.
Some guy way up on Capitol Hill (?) can't know what it's like in every single neighbourhood, or begin to give one iota of a shit about any single person or family outside of his "clan" in America...but a local government can. I do understand about illegal immigrant criminal activity...and how they support each other and make a huge network of ugliness. That happens too. And if you're government was closer (or rather, your local government had more power), it would be dealt with way more efficiently.

It has NOTHING to do with race! It has everything to do with LEGAL status as a US Citizen (or foreign national who has the proper Visa to work in the US)
Before I went to college, I had applied (as a walk in) for a job, at a local factory. While I was in there, I realized all the workers were White (Not Hispanic or African) Europeans. Needless to say, I didn't get a job and the factory was later raided for hiring illegal immigrants, who worked for little pay, as modern-day slaves.
The Hazleton Law did nothing but enforce the Federal law, which states:
A person (including a group of persons, business, organization, or local government) commits a federal felony when she or he:
"...assists an alien s/he should reasonably know is illegally in the U.S. or who lacks employment authorization, by transporting, sheltering, or assisting him or her to obtain employment..."
The Illegal Immigration Relief Act was passed to comply with the Federal law, which plainly states that it is illegal to employ or shelter an illegal alien. If you don't agree with the Federal law, then work to change that - don't call us racist for trying to enforce it.

It would allow certain racist people to have more power over people of different skin colors, because they could make the application process harder. The law probably (I hope) was created to lessen illegal immigrants in your town (btw- I believe we should lessen the amount of illegal immagrants in this country simply to help them- illegal are basically forced into slavery because their bosses can have them deported at any time- so no asking for a raise).
However, it would be easier to hijack that law for racist purposes than a more carefully phrased and differently constructed law.

Yeah, I kinda figured it was not your town after my research. Anyway, I am glad you do not feel he deserved it cause he was a minority or an illegal. I spend a lot of time in political blogs and saw a lot of that and it made me sick.

That tragic beating did not happen in this town, not even in this county. It happened in a town called Shenandoah, which is about 30 miles south of here. So, yes, it was near here, but if you lived around here you would know that Shenandoah is in it's own little world.
Everyone was shocked by the beating and (nearly) everyone who commented on it (on local news and news radio) agree that those boys should rot in prison for what they did. Of course, there were a few (very few) that said stupid crap like "it wouldn't have happened if he wasn't here illegally" but the majority of people don't feel that way.
My major problem is the drug/gang related crime that has increased dramatically, in the past few years. Less than two blocks from my home, there was a fatal shooting, by an illegal immigrant - that is the incident that started the Mayor's fight against this problem.

I just researched Hazleton PA and their ordinances and how the mayor said that murders and other violent crimes had increased dramatically over the prior 10 years since hispanics (both legal and illegal moved in).However, evidence presented in court showed Hazleton's crime rate actually declined at the same time its Hispanic population was increasing.
It is also interesting to note, no offense to LC, that Hazleton was the site of the Lattimer Massacre in the late 1800's the largest massacre of Central Europeans because at the time, 1897, they were illegal, it did however started a labor movement. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lattimer_Massacre

Mayor Barletta and the city council [of Hazleton PA] tried to change that by pulling in the welcome mat. They passed an ordinance called the "Illegal Immigration Relief Act," which punishes local businesses and landlords who give work or shelter to illegal immigrants.
Under the local law, anyone who hires an illegal immigrant or rents an apartment to one faces the loss of their business license and thousands of dollars of fines. It also requires everyone in Hazleton who rents an apartment to go to City Hall with a passport, birth certificate or immigration documents or citizenship to show that they are in the country legally. The names can then be checked against a federal data base to determine their immigration status.
...you can't pass an obviously unconstitutional, discriminatory illegal law like this one, you can use illegal tactics to get rid of illegal aliens. I'm sorry you are dealing with increased crime but it is truly a shame if you cannot see how ugly this law was. How hard it would make it for ANY person of color to find a job in that city. And if that had passed...and took over the nation...WOW! Denying people work and shelter based on race basically. UGLY!! Whoever thought of that as a solution should be smacked. And of course something needs to be done with illegal aliens but that is not the answer. To me, personally, illegal immigration is one of the most important issues. I live in Hazleton, PA - a town that somehow became the center of the illegal immigration battle.
When our mayor passed a law against illegal immigration, it was later overturned by a federal judge. Obama called the judge's ruling 'a victory for all Americans'.
This was NOT a victory for my town. Hazleton makes up app. 16% of the total population in Luzerne County. That being said, more than 60% of the illegal immigrants incarcerated in the Luzerne County prison were arrested in the Hazleton area.
Does it make me a racist because the criminal [illegal] alien population is disproportionately large in my hometown and I no longer feel safe in my own neighborhood? No, it does not. Race has nothing to do with this. There are criminal aliens of all races and I don't want any of them living in my neighborhood.
I know McCain isn't much better, when it comes to illegal immigration, but at least he has some sort of plan mapped out, which starts with securing out borders and deporting criminals.
