The Dark Knight Is Cleaning Up

Basically, "The Dark Knight" has already made a shit load of cash. The bitches at Warner Bros. are having a money party this weekend, where they will swim in pools of money, drink money martinis and wipe their asses with $100 bills.

It made $18.5 million on midnight screenings alone, breaking the midnight record set by Star Wars, Episode III, which made $16.9. George Lucas is a loser!

In total, it made around $63 million on Friday. It will probably make around ten billion dollars by the end of the weekend. "Batman Begins" made $48.7 million in its first weekend.

This is the thing, I really want to see TDK. I do. But a big movie means big crowds, which means BIG morons. Especially in this fucking heat. Heat makes morons even more moronic. And I have a fat mouth, so sometimes the word "cunt" just seems to creep out when I'm really annoyed. Before I know it, I'd have ten frat boys on my ass ( and not in a hot way). I don't need to spend the rest of my weekend in a hospital bed or jail cell. Nu uh.

I think I'll go see "Mamma Mia" instead. I hear it's fucking torture, but I'll bring Jack and ask the concession bitch to only fill my Coke halfway. You know, for my medicine.

I saw the Dark Knight yesterday in the Upper West Side on Broadway St. I had to go to the 1:30 showing in the afternoon (a matinee there is fucking $12) and it was still pretty packed, but as i got out of the theater, there was already a line half a mile long lining up outside the theater doors and going outside. People were like camping there to see a later showing of it. Its a GREAT movie though even if it is very long....see it during the day to avoid more assholes and people in general

come on Mamma Mia is pretty cute :D

saw it yesterday and it was great fun

Just got home from seeing it...and wow. It was REALLY good. I was honestly prepared to not enjoy myself, but I was rather tense the whole time; there's a ton of action and conflict and fun Bat toys. Plus, a preview of Watchmen beforehand nearly made my nerdgasm come prematurely.

Oh, also:

The Batman movies were on their last legs, like the Ocean movies, Heath Ledger was an exceptional actor and played many different roles without a problem. The movie media is taking advantage of his death, every commericial basically has the joker in it. A lot of Actors out there deserve an Oscar, lets hope they get it before its to late. Media whoring with kids and dead people seems the way to go. I will see the movie on tape, yes I can wait longer. Once again RIP My favorite batman was Michael Keaton.

No offense, but if he were alive, the commercials would focus on the Joker anyway. Know why? He's the damn antagonist. That's how movies roll.

Great review and advice, IC! Thank you! I'm really looking forward to this one.

So I saw it today! It was pretty crowded, but everybody behaved. The movie was FANTASTIC. I was expecting a lot, and I can't believe it, but it totally lived up to the hype, not because of Heath, just because it was an amazing movie. All the performances were good, and Heath's was very good, but the movie itself was better. I credit the director for that. If you saw Batman Begins, and liked it, which I did, this new one is actually even better than that.

Definitely GO, but two things: 1. Don't bring any little kids. It is super dark and violent and scary. 2. Don't go in there trying to relax like you're expecting some happy popcorn fun. I was completely nerve-wracked the whole time - it is that intense - but it's totally worth it.

This is why I love Michael K. I always thought I was the only one who had outrageous bursts of anger. Everyone else just sits back...but not michael. He's given everyone he un-pc slapdown they deserve.

My sediments exactly MK, my sediments exactly. i wanted to see TDN to but i did not want to go out in this heat. no way!

oh. and thought TDK would have made alot more money than it made this weekend. oh well. i guess that will teach me not to believe hype huh?

I went to the midnight showing in my home town. They had it playing on 10 screens.
Definitely worth seeing it in theaters. It is overall a really good film.

But you couldn't be more correct about the "big movie means big crowds, which means BIG morons" part.

Why should they have to change their marketing strategy because the actor OD'd?

No personal appearances, for one.

It is mind-boggling thinking of how much $$ this movie will rake in.. 18.5M just for the midnight showing??? Just think about the people like me that will wait until the "hype" dies down to see it, AND all of the fanatics that will see it 10+ times...wow, and I mean WOW...

I know Breakdown. I really need to be better prepared.

Another note on TDK, the theater I went to had the original costumes of Batman, Joker and the clown masks on display. Tongith they are displaying the batbike. If you're in L.A., see it at The Arclight. And call everyone a cunt to make up for my screw up.

People who keep saying that people who liked Heath's performance in TDK was only because he died, are just being cynical for the sake of being cynical. If dude hadn't kicked it, I'd STILL think he was the coolest superhero movie villain ever. See the movie if you're interested, don't if you're not - it's just that simple.

Im not saying TDK is not worth seeing.

Im saying people are being maudlin and giving TDK a lot more credit than it deserves because of HL's death.
******************************

I got that. I mentioned earlier that I have an aversion to these "must-see" movies, in general.
But the best I could explain it is that I'm just a snob like that:) Your post pretty much lays out my feelings on the matter.

And the Heath adoration is bothering me. There's a reason I'm on D-Listed and it has a lot to do with the mass hysteria(my philosophy of the week) created by celebs. Not that Heath is not a fabulous actor and what not cuz I LUVS him too and would have loved to see his skills mature. His death was tragic, he was wonderful, what a loss, blah, blah, blah...and then the industry that killed him cashes in. It just doesn't make me feel good.

So I saw TDK last night and it was a great movie. Too give MK credit, there was a moron sitting behind me that kept talking like he was the Siskel & fucking Ebert of filmaking. Like every preview that came on, he had to blurt out the name, which he was wrong on like 3 out of 4. I said really loud how glad I was to have someone so knowledgable sitting behind me. He shut the fuck up for the movie. My husband works for the Motion Picture industry so he likes to stay for the credits. So then Mr. Movie started blabbing about more shit. I turned around asked him if he thought you should be allowed to slap the shit out of people once in awhile. He looked at me like he was so confused. I should have let the word cunt slip, damn it. Another golden opportunity missed.

yo, angel.

Im saying people are being maudlin and giving TDK a lot more credit than it deserves because of HL's death.

If HL "deserves" an AA for his portrayal as the Joker in TDK, why was Gerard Butler not awarded for his role as King Leonidas in "300"?

Gerard Butler's thighs alone deserved awards for an outstanding work!

Devore's picture

"Devore, wouldn't you want your last work on earth to be your greatest?"

That's not the point. His performance in TDK is the greatest or it isnt, regardless of his untimely death.
Wanting HL last role to be his greatest doesnt make it so.

I've seen TDK and its a frivolous piece of work.

Can we think logically instead of froathing at that mouth over this?

This is a movie based on a comic book, ok?

It's not friggen Shakesphere.

Movies are made for different reasons.

TDK is a money maker.

This movie was made to make money.

BBM reached a little further than for the audience's wallets.
Flaws and all, BBM is superior film with superior ACTING from all the performers involved.

You don't go to see a TDK to see an actors or even a director's seminal work, you go to see a movie like this to be entertained in the least challenging way possible.

"I haven't seen this movie yet. Have you?"

Youre already assured this is HEATH LEDGER'S GREATEST PERFORMANCE but you haven't even seen this movie yet.

I have seen TDK.

If you intend to see this movie I recommend lowering your expectations and seeing TDK for what it really is: cheap entertainment.

What I'm saying is, it's a lot harder to play someone who's crazy just for the sake of being crazy than it is someone who happens to be in love with someone of the same sex. Homosexuality is normal to me, so though I thought he was great in BBM, I don't think it was that much of a stretch for him. However, he sat in a hotel room for weeks without talking to anyone, letting his mind completely unravel to play the Joker - the preparation was more intense so his performance was more intense. Since Heath wasn't a complete and utter nutcase in real life, his portrayal in TDK is more impressive to me than the one in BBM. And obviously the majority of the people who've seen the movie agrees.

And don't bring up Julia Roberts at all in a discussion of acting - that chick gets by on charisma and looks alone, lol.

i am excited about this because of heath, otherwise not that into blockbusters...did love iron man and glad to see robert downey jr sober and back on top...will wait until hype and crowds die down...

Ok, well the hubby and I went to see this last night and it is awesome- it deserves the hype! It had it all, it was intense, emotional, and funny.
The place was crowded but not crazy- everyone was pretty cool because they were just excited to see the flick.
Heath is amazing- it made me sad while I watched it, knowing that we will no longer be able to see this great talent make movies! The nurse scene was priceless. Loved it!

muncle's picture

I'm not going to see it until the whole madness surrounding it calms down. I did go to see Wall-E and it was just amazing. I've already seen the best movie of 2008 so it's all good. The Dark Night will likely kick ass, but it's not worth the hassle anyway.

joe shmoe's picture

It annoys me when a movie or an actor gets this kind of huge build up before it's released. Inevitably, there's going to be disappointment, because expectations are so high. Having said that, Heath applies his make-up like my Aunt Mary did when she went potty.

how are you going to say Heath Ledger's work in TDK is superior than his performance in Brokeback Mountain?

Devore, wouldn't you want your last work on earth to be your greatest? Perhaps it's a sentimental omage to someone who died too young. I haven't seen this movie yet. Have you?

From what I've heard, Heath worked really hard on this role. I'm interested in seeing where he went with it.

Brokeback Mountain was intense and "The Joker" role probably doesn't showcase Heath enough throughout the movie but I'm positive it's still worth a watch.

I want to see DK, not only because CB is hotness but also HL's performance. Creepy!

BTW, whatever happened to Michael Keaton? It's like he's fallen off the face of the earth.

As for Mamma Mia, I have nothing against it, but for me the only ABBA-themed movie will always be Muriel's Wedding. A true classic, and Toni Collette is by far my favorite actress working today.
