DWoods has to be 26 or 27 by now (not that much of a difference...but it's the principal lol). We went to NYU together (back when she was a "Muslim" and wore scarves to cover herself). She's at least a year older than I am.

Sorry, Spoiled. Didn't mean to discredit you! That really was an interesting article. I had no idea until I read it that Kubrick was basing the film's theme upon that subject. I agree that it may have been irrelevant to SK's overall theme in the novel, but it did tie into King's declaration that the Overlook Hotel is evil. However, the origin of evil King was referring to was the general criminal type--murderers, drug dealers/users, mobsters, rapists, etc. whereas Kubrick's idea for the hotel's origin of evil came from the hardship of Native Americans inflicted upon them by the white man. I believe that Kubrick could've included a few key scenes from the book into the film, but overall I find his version a million times better than the made-for-TV version which was dull and cheesy. I think the only things I agreed with in that version was the hedge animal scene and the fact that Rebecca DeMornay played Wendy this time around (she was a closer match to the character in the book).
Good grief, I wrote a novella. Oh, well. I could write about this film all day if no one stopped me.

I can't take credit for the link, Spoiler posted it. It just took the movie to another level for me. I need to watch it again and pick up on all those "clues." If that was his intention, than it was done brilliantly. I especially like the part where the closing music and scene resembles our own dismisal. Perfect. We had to read The Lottery several times in school. I read the 'Castle' book because it was by the same author as The Lottery.
When we read The Lottery for Sophmore English class, we had a lottery. The 'winner' was stoned with paper wads by the rest of the class.

Clarisse--I adore subtlety in horror. It makes the result all the more shocking.
Justwondering--that essay you gave us the link for...is that the one that explains how Kubrick centered the theme of the film around the plight of the Native Americans? I actually used that article in college to write a paper for my horror film theory class. I thought it was an interesting take even though it's probably one of the largest reason why SK didn't approve of the film.

I couldn't finish reading Pet Sematary. Any book where a cat dies - hell to the NO! Kill all the humans you want, but leave the kitties alone!
--------------------------------
I hate it when animals die in books and film, too...but I love the supernatural and cemeteries and the dead coming back to life, so the cat dying was kind of over-ridden by all those other elements. You should've finished reading it--it gets really good and scary towards the end.

I have serious clown issues, too. I can never look at Tim Curry the same way, again. I did read IT, though. Good book.

lol yeah I saw that commercial the other day, except its 2 boys. Out of all the supernatural and far fetched things about the shinning, the most unrealistic one would be Jack banging Shelley, and Shelly being able to have such a beautiful child, cause that bitch is U G L Y. Shelley was also an idiot to say she was "jealous" at the time of Jack Nicholson, and there is a part where Stanley Kubrick has to tell her to stop "acting" a certain way because shes over doing it and it looks stupid in the dvd commentary.
"When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep - not screaming, like the passengers in his car. "
Many people are discussing it at wealthy dating club R I C H L O V I N G.C O M, where the hot affluent singles and sexy girls and models to hook up for Hot Love, Flirt and Sexy Dating!
ImpertinentVixen--True, Shelley Duvall was kind of a bad choice physically, but I think her performance was great. And I saw that phone commercial the other day and immediately thought of The Shining. Awesome.

Great link! That was fascinating, now I need to go watch that movie again. Happy Birthday to all!
Shelley Duvall was the WORST thing about The Shining. She was so unintentionally comedic, it affected the film negatively. Plus, I could not believe Jack Nicholson would bang her. She's like a floppy scarecrow.
Anybody see the new ads for a cell phone company, maybe Verizon, that features creepy twins a la The Shining? They are warning about bad cell phone service. Classic!

Yeah, it's not the kids fault since he was born that way...we can go ahead and blame it on the casting dept., or even SK himself, since he was more hands-on in this film and probably had a hand in choosing the cast because he was extremely disappointed with Kubrick's choice of Shelley Duvall for the original film.
The book scared the crap outta me, too...but not nearly as much as Pet Sematary.

In heaven, everything is fine. You've got your good things, and I've got mine.
I would also like to take this opportunity to snark about Michelle Kwan, because she gets on my nerves something fierce:
Bitch, you're not ever going to win the gold, so give it the fuck up! Retire your ass from the national championship and give somebody ELSE a fucking chance! Yeah, all your jumps are perfect, but who the hell cares, since you have the artistic expressiveness of a robot. Sasha Cohen can skate circles around your wooden ass even if she falls all the time. The way the judges suck up to you and give you better scores than you deserve is revolting. Don't even get me started on the fawning commentators (why the hell do they have to talk through every performance? Annoying skanks!)
Just give it up, Michelle Kwan. A gold medal is not in your future. Ever! You're like Charlie Brown trying to kick the damn football. The Lucy of Fate will always snatch it away from you. Give it up, you embarrassing ho. That'll teach you to write your damn autobiography at the age of 13 and give it a title like "Heart of a Champion". Arrogant skank! You'll never win the gold, neener neener neener!!
