So Long, Larry Harmon
I know, two sad posts in a row and right before a holiday. I'm going to need to pick up an extra 12-pack tonight. Well, Larry Harmon, a longtime Bozo the Clown, died today of congestive heart failure at the age 83. His publicist said he passed away at home.
Larry wasn't the original Bozo, but he believed the clown could become a major star, so he bought the licensing rights to the character. Eventually, he licensed Bozo out to dozens of TV stations.
His wifey of 29 years said, “He was the most optimistic man I ever met. He always saw a bright side; he always had something good to say about everybody. He was the love of my life."
Larry is off to the Big Top in the sky! May he rest in peace......

BAck in the day it was a very big deal to be on the Bozo the clown show. My grammar school friend Mikey and his sister got tickets. My friend, who at eight years old was way too cool for school, did not want to appear on the same screen with a clown. Of course we were all glued to the TV when the show was on. Back then it was live TV. Mickey scowled and grimaced his way thru the program. At the end of the show, during the spotlight on smiles segment, Bozo went up to Mickey and said, How about you give your folks at home your best smile. Mickey looked straight into the camera and said: FUCK YOU Clowny.
Bozo took the insult with resigned good grace and cut to a commercial.

Christ on a bicycle, that picture is scary. I don't know if it's because I'm relatively young (twenty-three) or because I'm Canadian, but I never had the [dis]pleasure of seeing Bozo on television. The closest I came to an entertaining clown on TV was seeing John Wayne Gacy's biography on A&E when I was twelve.
