OMG. That Q-tip method cracked me the f up. When I was a kid, we had a siamese cat that started her heats earlier than the vet allowed her to be fixed. According to our vet, once that cat's in heat you have to wait until they're done before they can be fixed. Our cat went through that and it was absolutely miserable; we finally let her into the garage so she could 'prowl' and she never wanted to come back in. Found out she marked half the stuff in there, but at least you didn't have to deal with the yowling and writhing all day. Nothing like watching a horny animal to turn you off of sex...

When I was a little teeny child like 5 or 6, my first cat, Kitty, went into heat, and I remember getting all upset and crying because I thought something was terribly wrong with her, the howls, and the motions. My parents, of course knew what the deal was, and had her fixed. Bless them, they told me she had her appendix taken out! LMAO. Once I got older, I realized what the deal was, and we just dealt with it, tolerated it, tried to distract them, and as you said, isolated Molly until we could get her into the vet to be spayed. The very idea of the q-tip thing is just ultra-nasty.

I once cared for a huge colony of cats, many of which were intact, and although females in heat are annoying, it really isn't necessary to sexually abuse the cat. A good set of earplugs and/or isolating kitty in a soundproofed room would be a much less creepy solution.
