It's Not Just A Bad Dream
America ruins everything and this is no exception! The American version of the beloved Australian comedy "Kath & Kim" has already shot its first episode. NBC has also bought 7 more episodes bringing its order total to 13 episodes. Molly Shannon plays Kath and Selma Blair plays Kim. Give it a bone, NBC!
NBC might as well just stab me in the heart with Skeletor's clavicle bone. This is illegal!
I'm not that only one that is shitting mad about this fuckery. Selma Blair spoke to news.com.au about the Australian backlash, "Some people are really protective and horrified that we're doing it in the United States."
The crappy US version will take place in a suburb in Florida. It's the same set-up. Molly will play an overly positive mother and Selma will play her celebrity-obsessed, bitchy daughter.
Selma also claims she gained some weight to play chunky ass Kim, "The joke is I wear the same clothes from when I was 13 and when I sit down there will be a big roll over my shorts and I call myself the hottest thing. There will definitely be the appearance of a thong or two."
Kath & Kim is the one of the only shows that makes me laugh until I barf. "Cops" is the other show, but for different reasons.
You can already see the Americanization from just the first photo! Molly and Selma are supposed to look frumpy and fugly! They look semi-hot. Epponnee Rae is not happy about this.
VIA ONTD

I give this show 2 weeks.
And just another little ps. if Selma Blair has put on weight for this role, she is now (judging from the picture) ALMOST the size of a normal woman. Kim is supposed to be 'big'. HARDLY.
Well, as long as Turner/Riley are getting some money out of the hapless Americans, happy days.
OK there is a reason why this is NOT going to work - i mean, be as funny as the Gina Riley/Jane Turner version. Because the Australian version is giving shit to AUSTRALIAN BOGANS. These do not exist in America. I guess the American version of that is a 'redneck' and redneck jokes have been done to death.
In conclusion, this is going to be axed VERY quickly.

Hey now, it's not like we had a choice in it.
No one sent me a preview and ballot.
At best, two seasons of it, one Emmy for Molly, a nod for Selma, then 100 years of useless media hworing.

God, seriously! Americans suck!! How dare they not get British/Aussie/other country humor!?!! It's like we live in our own, oh I don't know, country with a different culture or something.

It's less that we live in our own country with our own culture, than that we live in our own deeply nationalistic bubble and the rest of the world seems a lot less real to us.
I'm American, and I understand Australian humor just fine, so I don't think it's all that esoteric.
I don't know why they couldn't just syndicate the show here instead of feeling like they have to make an American version. Ruining foreign films and series by remake is a Hollywood tradition. They did the same thing to Godzilla. Bastards!

The pic looks like Married with Children, different colour hair. Maybe the vibe has been lost in translation because you'd never see a drab, worn out lounge suite at Kath's place.
As a New Zealander I have never in all of my life heard us call anything 'New Zealandish' by the way lol.
OnT: I LOVE Kath and Kim. It's hilarious, love it.
However, what terrible casting this American version appears to have. And by only judging the promo picture alone it looks incredibly unfunny. It just looks, well, wrong somehow.
And Selma fucking Blair for starters as Kim. Good god. (Love Molly S, but not so sure about her in this).
Like the US version of The Office, I don't think I will be bothering to watch this version of K&K should it ever be shown down-under.
Too much just gets lost in the translation. Quite sad really.

BUT WHO will play the bfd Sharon!? And I wouldn't worry, America, it's not high culture - don't feel like you're supposed to be "reading between the lines" that you aren't "cultured". Kath & Kim is fucking hilarious!

Why go I get the feeling that between the lines there's plenty of people arguing that Americans aren't cultured, just because some of us have'nt heard about these shows?
1) Watching television sitcoms doesnt make you cultured. Traveling or reading Faulkner, James Joyce or Ibsen or even watching National Geographic does.
2) British, Austrailian, New Zealandish, (you fill in the blanks) humor is in fact British, Austailian, New Zealandish humor. This is the reason it goes over many of our heads(as a few of you put it). It's a certain culture's humor. It's sorta like the humor you and your circle of friends share. Another circle might not get your humor. Remember, laughter is universal, not humor.

Kel was my favorite character. I know the American version will suck. The original Kel had this subtle charm which will be completely lost in translation.
This is pure blasphemy.

Oh I love Father Ted! And most English comedy for that matter. Except the fourth season of Coupling (that sucked because Jeff wasn't in it).
Must be why I married a Brit.
***************************
I love Father Ted too, but it has nothing to do with Brit humor.
I just don't see how an American version of this show would work. The various affected Australian accents are the best part. I mean, how can you Americanize Prue and Trude? And who can play the equivalent to Magda Szubanski's Sharon??? Disgraceful.

True. I don't think Hollywood will give us a Helen Mirren anytime soon. Meryl Streep is close, but unless she produces the movie, she's not free to be sexy AND old in a storyline; closest she got was eons ago on Bridges of Madison County.
FUCK this is depressing. Reminds me of watching Corrie on YouTube and realizing not only did their gay plotline have hot men kissing hotly, but most of the actors look "real" for lack a better word. Yes, many are downright ugly, but it's beautiful to watch when either a man or woman is not surgified to death but still oozes hotness.
... and counting the days till they do a US fuckery on Bad Girls, too *sigh*
The US is currently in the process of fucking up about a thousand of my favorite Brit/Euro shows...why would I ever hope they'd do better with this one?
What is it with North American actresses that they're soooooooo fucking terrified of looking ugly, or even just dowdy? Why does every character on TV have to look like a gym-addicted makeover queen? BORING!

"In the original show, the actresses are the same age in real life even though one plays the mother and the other plays the daughter. They also played additional characters who were peers, not mother/daughter, such as the snobby shop clerks Trude and Prude."
Oh I didn't know that! I only saw clips of the show. I still think Hollywood will have them be Mother and Daughter only as I doubt the Australian show's concept will cross over properly to the U.S. sitcom, and of course, a female in Hollywood over 40 is considered old. :P
Yep. One of the things that make the original show so funny is that "Kim" is way too old to be acting the way her character does.
The U.S. version will still suck, because Hollywood refuses to realize that sexing up everyone on TV severely diminishes the comic potential. Ugliness is funny. Bland, run of the mill prettiness isn't.

hung like a hampster.
Let's cast a girl (Selma Blair) who is known for being 3 lbs and having eating disorders and cast her as "chunky" She claims she put on weight for the role, so this means she only threw up 3 times rather than 5 that day.
It gets worse, Selma Blair is far too old for the role. She's 36.

My point exactly!
I LOVE the only gay in the village!
I heart Kath and Kim and this just pisses me the fuck off. America DOES ruin everything.
Best case scenario: it tanks, forcing the creators to go the fuck back to Australia where they belong and make more episodes of the ORIGINAL show.

I can see that this show will be nothing close to the original and that's just in the casting department! How old is Molly Shannon that she can have a daughter who is Selma Blair's age? Isn't Selma Blair close to 30? Molly isn't close to 50 is she? So typical of Hollywood!
Imported TV on network television for American audiences never really works. The network sensibilities cater to sponsors not the viewers.

With Paul Feig directing it could be ok (Arrested Development, Freaks & Geeks).
I actually thought this could translate. As long as a good accent was used - Southern being the best and Florida sounds good.
The casting appears to be awful.
I want to know who got the Cujo role.
Ah, good ol' Hollywood hubris and lack of originality!
It's like how a few years ago they were talking about doing an American version of AbFab with Roseanne Barr. I'm glad they didn't.
But correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the ladies who play Kath & Kim in the AU version are consultants for the show? This may help this ship from capsizing altogether.
Plus, I must admit a soft spot for Selma Blair--she's hot, she's trashy, and she was married to a son of Frank Zappa. She's gotta be okay, right? maybe? I dunno...
^^^
EAT SHIT AND LIVE!
Why do they have to take a show that is funny for its observations and realism and gloss it over?! It's so frustrating!! Will there be incidental music to punctuate and canned laughter to tell us when to laugh? What a load of shit!

Yeah, but you seem to forget we gave the world Seinfeld, Cheers, Sex and the City, Arrested Development, I Love Lucy, 30 Rock, MASH, All in the Family, Frasier, Freaks & Geeks... I could go on and on.
Everybody makes mistakes.. for every UK Office, there's Benny Hill or some equally back schlock.
The problem with America is that we always have to re-do foreign TV shows, instead of just showing the originals on network TV here, like other countries do with our shows.

Kim and Kath is a hysterical show. I can't believe they are going to ruin it. Sorry Americans but on the average you just can't translate shows very well. The original Office is sheer brilliance. The US version is all friendly and goofy. It's good but does not even come close to the original.
And that is what they'll do to this show. They'll take the heart of it out and stick in a laugh track.
But what can you expect from a country where it's television industry and viewers like/honour Two and Half Men and According to Jim. Sigh.

joeschmoe - Little Britain USA will be on HBO in September but in this case Matt and David will still be on it. Although I don't think all of people will get the characters, especially Vicki as it takes some time to adapt to how fast she talks.
Selma Blair still isn't fat enough to play Kim and her outfits aren't as outrageous either. I think Kim actually tops Eddie from Ab Fab on the craziest skinny girl outfits.
This show is going to BLOW.

Father Ted is FANTASTIC! American's just don't get the British (In this case Irish) sense of humor at times, which is a shame.
