I agree and should have added that into my post. If they are heavy from a metabolic disorder, thyroid problem or something else that is a medical reason, they have my full sympathy. And there are plenty of people out there who suffer with this.

If it's a matter of just repeatedly hitting up KFC because they want to and don't give a flip about their health, then I can't feel much for them. Sure, I cave and get a little regular hamburger (no Big Macs - I'm talking the kind that come with Happy Meals) from McD's once in awhile, but it's all about moderation. You can't eat that garbage every day or your arteries will turn into cement.

And what's the thing with calling the kid "James Wilkie'? Why not just James, or Jim or Jimmy or Jamie or something. Is that the new trendy thing, to call him James Wilkie like they wouldn't know who he was otherwise?

Smokers deserve to be taxed extra, and so do alcoholics and fat people. Seriously, they're all sucking the system dry in their later years thanks to their emphysema, COPD, cirrhosis, and diabetes. I'd rather have my tax dollars pay for health services for the VA than for obese loads and nasty smokers who induce their own health problems. The more you are potentially going to take from the pot, the more you should be taxed for willful habits that ruin your health.

Smokers ARE taxed quite heavily! I know here in Texas, taxes from cigs goes towards the DOT for building and reparing roads. I mean I'm a smoker, and don't try to make up 'excuses' or in denial....I enjoy smoking like someone enjoys a drink or beer. I've known a number of people with this condition, and that just isn't true.

Addictions are self-induced and I can understand having no sympathy for those. But the rise of obesity has much more to do with the way food is produced nowadays, as well as the totally screwed up USDA pyramid they are pushing now (thanks to agribusiness lobbying). It has less to do with binge eating than people seem to think.

I wish your opinion about smoking were true, because it sounds pretty clever. Unfortunately, there are people who will occassionally smoke a cigarette around friends (like maybe once every 5-6 months?). That's what I do. I know, next it's heroine.

I feel honoured that he feels he can come talk to me...I just wish I could do something...anything!

His mom is a controling, suspicious, manipulative type - she's raising him on his own (I've seen no evidence of a 'dad' type), and thus there is no man around to say, "We're getting the boy's hair cut".

I have told him however, that when he gets a bit older and bigger, he will be able to get a part time job, get more freedom, have his own $. I said, "what would you do with your very first paycheque in a few years?" He said, "...and it's all my own money?" I replied, "yup, all yours, except for what the government pockets..." He looked at me with a funny 'you should know' look and said, "get my hair cut, what do you think?!" He's become preoccupied with his hair and being bullied for it...he's a smart and sweet kid, and he's suffering on so many levels because of his obtuse controling mom.

I have a neighbour who refuses to let her little boy get his extremely long hair cut (he's in gr. 7 now) because he's getting bullied. She won't let him! He cries about it, because he's getting picked on because he *does* look a little girly with all that hair. Poor kid, I don't know what to say/do...it's just bad all around.

He's suffering cuz the kids won't accept that he's different. If they'd just get over it, it wouldn't matter. Why does he have to conform? For me, that's weird.

I get all the other stuff, tho - the mom should be sensitive and move him to an environment where he CAN be accepted and if she can't do that then she should just cut his hair. But it bothers me that bullying is just accepted. Bullying is the symptom of not feeling good inside and that's not cool. I would give him the $ in a heartbeat, but I'm afraid of the consequences. Any kind of 'trouble' involving a crazy rabid mother and a kid could endanger my teaching license. She is the type that would call the cops on me or start causing me all sorts of BS for giving her kid $ and directing him to the barber.

I have tried to hint, cajole, suggest, and actually say, "You need to get his hair cut" but she always ignores my words or says, "he'll be glad he has his hair when he's older." It's like she wants him to be someone he isn't. The little guy asked me this week, "M., is it true that if you join the army they cut your hair?" I replied with a yes, and he said, "I'm going to join the army as soon as I can then!" I reminded him that he told me recently his dream was to be an archetect, and he said, "I do want to be an archetect, but my mom would never let me cut my hair, so I'll let the army do it."

She talks to me about his problems because I'm a teacher, but she doesn't want any of my advice. As a Gr. 7 & 8 teacher, I know it's FUCKING ROUGH for them at that age, anyone different is eaten for breakfast.

LOVE IT!!!! LOL I have heard all of the "harry" jokes. But thats a new one. LOL It is actually my first and middle name. Most people think it is my real name since i used it for my name doing club promotions. Kinda my club name i guess. Actually boring now that i think for it.
