R.I.P. Cyd Charisse

And here's some sad news..... Movie star and dancer, Cyd Charisse, passed away today at the age of 86. Her publicist said she was admitted to Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles yesterday after she suffered an apparent heart attack.

She was born Tula Ellice Finklea on March 8, 1921. She starred in such films as "Ziegfeld Follies," "Singin' in the Rain," "The Band Wagon," "Brigadoon" and "Silk Stockings." Band Wagon was always one of my favorites. You should definitely NetFlix it if you haven't seen it.

She is survived by her husband of almost 60 years, Tony Martin, and her 2 children.

Rest in peace, Cyd.....

Gorgeous Cyd was one of the last class acts around. Very sad.

Tula Ellice Finklea has replaced "Amanda Hugandkiss" as my new favorite drag name.

I'm with Stockbroker as well. I was born in the wrong decade. While I appreciate a lot of our modern conveniences and advances in medicine, when it comes to the people who populate the planet today....not so much.

R.I.P. Miss Charisse.

PCA: Thank you for saying that. AND...I absolutely LOVE-LOVE-LOVE your avie! Rojo Caliente is the hotness.

PSL: Thanks, love. You're so awesome for remembering that. xoxoxo It's been a tough year; I also lost my favorite aunt (she was a great-aunt) a month ago. I think I would have liked to have been born in the early 1930s so that I would have been a teen in the late 40s and 20-something in the 50s. I love the fashions from that era!

hey radio, I remember you had lost your Grandad recently...I am sorry for your loss.

I was born 20 years too late, IMO. I would have loved to have been born in 1950.

Rip, Cyd. At the risk of sounding like Gay Claken..My mom would let me stay home on certain days, when their would be a "really good" afternoon movie..Just ignore this if you aren't old enough to remember those. Cyd was always one of those "special" days. Thanks for the memories, Lady.

What a classy lady and it's lovely to hear that she was married for so many years. I'm with Stockbroker - I too feel like I was born in the wrong era.

I just found that that my great-uncle passed away today at the age of 82 of colon cancer. He was a WWII vet who was reported killed in action before he turned up 7 months later, having spent that time in a Japanese prison camp. He refused for all these years to discuss his experiences during the war. He was awarded a Purple Heart and went on to become a bank president after the war. He was the youngest and last of his siblings, as my grandfather passed away only 4 months ago. The "greatest generation" will be completely gone soon, and it's a shame because they truly exemplified class, dignity, and true beauty.

A class act all the way. None of the dancers of today can capture the elegance, sophistication, and femininity as she did.

Sad news indeed. She was an amazing dancer (rent "Singin' in the Rain" or "Silk Stockings" if you don't believe me), absolutely gorgeous, and a very classy lady (so unlike the sluts, er, stars of today).

Rest in peace, Cyd.

tallulah's picture

I'm so sad. I adored Ms. Charisse. She, Rita Hayworth, Vera-Ellen, Eleanor Powell, Ann Miller, Ginger Rogers....They all had beauty, grace and were classy. Their dancing had a dreamy quality to it. If you haven't seen any of these lovely ladies films do yourself a favor and see them.

Rest in Peace Cyd!....GOTTA DANCE!!!!!

She was very, very beautiful.

Cyd was so beautiful in Brigadoon with Gene Kelly. Married for 60 years, yowsa! A record in Hollyweird!

I saw her and her husband at a Florida dinner theater in the 1970s (shut up, my grandparents took me) and she was lovely. Had that wonderful tall dancer's body even in her 50s.

Astaire's favorite dancing partner was actually Rita Hayworth...even though he was paired more times with Ginger Rogers. Rita was considered the best dancer in Hollywood...Ginger and Cyd were close seconds.

Madam Pince's picture

Not only a hot dancer but a fine lady and normal-sized. If a starlet had her body now, she'd be considered fat, which is total shit.

Thanks for all the class you contributed to life, Cyd. You'll be sorely missed.

Oh, dear. One of my favorite films starring Cyd Charisse is "Brigadoon". Video, DVD. Got it. Love it.

If you've seen any of her movies, she definitely deserves "Hot Slut" status. In "An American in Paris" she set the screen on fire!
