A Gayelle Love Story

Phyllis Lyon, 84, and Del Martin, 87, plan to be among the first gay and gayelle couples to be legally married in San Francisco, CA at 5pm today. They have waited 55 years. Damn! 55 years of the same coochie? It must be true love.

When they first fell in love, they were fired from their jobs, risked being arrested and sent to electroshock therapy. They founded a social club for gayelles in San Francisco in 1955.

This will be their second time down the aisle. They married in 2004 when the mayor of San Francisco started issuing marriage licenses to gay couples. The wedding picture of them holding each other was soon seen worldwide. The Supreme Court eventually voided all the licenses and killed the fun.

The clerk's office plans to stay open late today, so Phyllis and Del might not be the first gayelle couple married in the city. They don't seem to mind. Phyllis told AP, "We get along well. And we love each other."

Congrats to these two hot gayelle memaws! At least they know what they're getting into on their sexy wedding night. I still can't believe they've been together 55 years! I hope they put some hot sauce on the chocha from time to time to keep it spicy!

Thanks Dalia & Cheni Ali

There's just a certain irony that seems to be lost on you what with you being the lone (and vaguely evasive) outsider who has to defend herself against a majority and plea for tolerance.

Now you have just a small taste of what it's like to be these women.

Madame S: ditto.
It makes me uncomfortable to know that some people are so consumed with worrying other peoples' sexual preferences. Creepy, really.

and another one (though there are several more)...

Funny that people like Bossy state that they "disagree" with gay marriage.

And her name's Bossy? Hmmm, imagine that

I'm not judging these women. I'm not saying anything mean-spirited about them. I'm not jumping on a moral high horse nor am I saying I'm better than them. I've also not been rude to any of you and yet quite a few of you are taking subtle jabs at me. All I had commented was that my opinion differs from the rest of you and that rather than get into a huge argument about it I would leave it at that. In no way am I preventing same-sex marriages nor am I consumed with worrying about it. I'm not out protesting, I'm not doing anything malicious. I'm entitled to my opinion and I'm being respectful to those who don't share my opinion.

My username has nothing to do with what I'm saying, obviously many people on dlisted have interesting names and mine is just that--a name. I've not been trying to push anything on you guys at all. Though, on the contrary, I've been reading all of your comments and rather than belittling you by saying that you have "little" and "feeble" thoughts, as I've been told all in reference to my first, respectfully stated and brief comment, I've actually taken them as your own views--neither better or worse than mine.

By saying that I'm so wrong to have my own thoughts and that yours are the correct ones, really, you're the ones on high horses. I would hope that we could all blog our thoughts while still being mature and respectful of others. This is dlisted, not perezhilton.

Kudos to Viva la Lohan for so eloquently stating that:

you are entitled to your opinion, (hopefully) nobody will give you shit for that, as long as you present it with respect for other opinions. It could get boring if we all just sat around and circle-jerked each other, all having the same ideas and morals. Have at it.

P.S. Sorry for the long post. It didn't feel as if it would take so much space.

to kiwi kim...

after my cousin (who was gay) died of AIDS I volunteered at an AIDS outreach program.

I learned a lot about AIDS and the extra legal complications it has for unmarried couples (peewee herman's lawyer sister did the seminar).

they did lots of things including visiting clients, raising money for apartments they subsidize for clients.

I know AIDS isn't only gays. but some gays are estranged from their families and really need help.

I am straight as well. but I thought this was best for me since there were many different "jobs".

I usually did (free) office work after I left my paying job. the money they saved by using me instead of hiring someone could have bought food or some medicine for a client.

kiwikim, these sweet ladies put many hetero couples to shame for that matter by longevity alone! It should humble many people who think that hating on people for their choice of adult, same-sex partnership is some sort of prurient, evil things.

Thanks, but let's face it. I'll be lucky if I do anything that makes the world a better place like these ladies have. Who knows what difference the opportunity to marry will make to the young gay men and women growing up? Maybe gay adolescent men will stop having the highest suicide rate? It's probably hard to understand why this is so important to me since I'm not gay. But I want that dream, you know? That dream of a fair country, where it really is true that all men are created equal, that people haven't died in wars just for resources. I want our ideals to matter. I want what they fucking told me in the history books when I was growing up god damn it!

I'm reading over the Lyon-Martub web site and they've been treating the people that supposedly humanitarian doctors have refused to treat for years because they are Crissy Crockers and what not. I think I need to send them some money. Maybe I could cut (more) corners this week.

in more gay news... I saw george takai & fiance talking about their september wedding. he got asked about brangelina's statement that they wouldn't get married until everyone could. he said they have fans all over the country and gays can't get married in all of them. he jokingly added that states should legalize gay marriage to prevent brangelina from living in sin. hehe this was preview of a show on cnn.

lizzieb's picture

Well done them. In the UK we've had gay marriage for years and the only consequence (aside from the obvious important human rights issue) is I've had a lot more weddings to go to. The first one, the couple had been together for 30 years. Lovely. The world keeps turning here in England so I guess in a while this will not be news. I hope so. Good luck ladies!

What would 2 80 something year old women need to register for? They have been together for 55 friggen years, I'm sure they have everything they need.

Because they fought their entire life for it. Because there is supposed to be something in America called the Constitution which guarantees equality before the law. Because they know they are an example of courage. Because every adult should have the right to choose who they enter into legal contracts with, who they leave their property to, who they bestow their life insurance or health insurance benefits upon.
You won't ever understand what freedom is until you loose it. I feel really sorry for you. But I guess you also won't ever have to know what discrimination is either. In that way you are damned lucky.

THANK FUCKING GOD we're finally getting the America we were told existed...equality before the law, all men are created equal, and all that other bullshit we supposedly already had with the constitution that they keep saying we have to go off to war to fight for. God Bless these two lovely ladies and their tenacity to keep fighting for what is right. There would be no goodness in the world if there weren't people like this willing to keep fighting for it.

And FYI- gays could get married in New Zealand years ago. We were also the first country to allow women to vote. Not America. If the dumb fucks in the US Supreme Court reverse the California court, gay and gayelles are welcome here.

PS-FUCK NEW YORK, for not doing what was right on this issue last year.

Aw, so sweet. It sucks that they have to be judged by anybody.

I have yet to understand why this hasn't been legal earlier....and permanent. As a religious person, I have no issue with this. The people that do seem to cherry pick their way through the bible to suit their needs. All I seem to hear is that it is "wrong" yet they conduct their lives in total disregard for the book they hold in such high regard. One of the most profound couples I have ever met was a neighbor couple growing up. They had both been in "traditional" marriages and had children. They were both miserable. They got divorced and managed to find true love in each other. I thought Ollie and Stefan (Swedish couple) were incredible. They were together for over 36 years when Ollie passed away. The pain was beyond description for Stefan after loosing his life partner. To add insult to injury, there was no protection for Stefan with regard to pension/life insurance. Even though Ollie had left his entire fortune to Stefan, the insurance/pension company at the time did not "recognize" their relationship and granted the over $3mm to Ollie's disgusting children who hadn't seen him since divorcing their mother and to the grandchildren who had NEVER seen him. For those people who would stand in judgement of a gay/gayelle couple because of religious reasons, I ask you this....doesn't the bible state "only God can judge?". Just curious.

"Suffice it to say that my opinion greatly differs from the majority here."

I would hope this topic might give you some pause then. Suffice it to say that these Marriage Affirmation Acts designed to masquerade as Gay Jim Crow legislation and are tailor-made to abridge gay rights in general. Employment, housing opportunity, military service, wills, power of attorney, adoption, child custody, health care proxies, medical directives, joint bank accounts, insurance, et al. are just as much in contention.

When you put real faces like those of these two ladies and take into account that the self-styled Moral Arbiters of the nation long for the days of sodomy laws being reenacted and the dismantling of the A.C.L.U., it's a little tougher to be openly draconian and facile about telling people they don't count.
