Earlier, I posted about how Clint Eastwood said Spike Lee needs too "shut his face" after Spike said he was pissed off that Clint didn't feature any African American soldiers in a couple of his war movies.
Spike has responded to ABC News! Spike said, "First of all, the man is not my father and we're not on a plantation either."
Escandalo! You better duck. Clint is going to throw his caramel squares at Spike.
He went on to say, "He's a great director. He makes his films, I make my films. The thing about it though, I didn't personally attack him. And a comment like 'a guy like that should shut his face' -- come on Clint, come on. He sounds like an angry old man right there."
Angry old man? Yup, that sounds like Clint. What's Spike's point?
"If he wishes, I could assemble African-American men who fought at Iwo Jima and I'd like him to tell these guys that what they did was insignificant and they did not exist. I'm not making this up. I know history. I'm a student of history. And I know the history of Hollywood and its omission of the one million African-American men and women who contributed to WWII. Not everything was John Wayne, baby." YES! That's the way I like, Spike. Nice and dirty.
Spike finished with, "In his vision of Iwo Jima, Negro soldiers did not exist. Simple as that. I have a different version."

What does having Morgan Freeman in your movie have to do with this? The ISSUE (according to Spike) is about not having blacks represented in an ACTUAL historical moment they actively participated in. Not some FICTIONAL western or boxing movie.
I back Clint on this, he told it from a certain perspective as was his right to do so. We all know there are many perspectives (white, black, Jewish, Asian, etc etc)from which to look at WWII.
And Spike's most profitable movie was The Last Man, which made nearly 90 million. Nothing to sniff at.

WORD. I don't think the point that there were actually African Americans in the war is being lost, it's just that in the context of the film, it's not given a special spotlight. Such were those times, shameful as it may be. Since the film is set in a time before Civil Rights, wouldn't Clint have been forcing today's standards on yesterday's history if he did spotlight their efforts?

As a black woman, I don't have a problem with Clint Eastwood and the way he casts or produces his films. He has probably given more work to Forrest Whittaker and Morgan Freeman than Spike has.

I agree completely...Spike always uses the least tactful methods to proclaim/shine light on legitimate and important (racially sensitive) issues...it's unfortunate that happens because then we get the masses dismissing the point completely because of his douchebag tactics.
