Earlier, I posted about how Clint Eastwood said Spike Lee needs too "shut his face" after Spike said he was pissed off that Clint didn't feature any African American soldiers in a couple of his war movies.
Spike has responded to ABC News! Spike said, "First of all, the man is not my father and we're not on a plantation either."
Escandalo! You better duck. Clint is going to throw his caramel squares at Spike.
He went on to say, "He's a great director. He makes his films, I make my films. The thing about it though, I didn't personally attack him. And a comment like 'a guy like that should shut his face' -- come on Clint, come on. He sounds like an angry old man right there."
Angry old man? Yup, that sounds like Clint. What's Spike's point?
"If he wishes, I could assemble African-American men who fought at Iwo Jima and I'd like him to tell these guys that what they did was insignificant and they did not exist. I'm not making this up. I know history. I'm a student of history. And I know the history of Hollywood and its omission of the one million African-American men and women who contributed to WWII. Not everything was John Wayne, baby." YES! That's the way I like, Spike. Nice and dirty.
Spike finished with, "In his vision of Iwo Jima, Negro soldiers did not exist. Simple as that. I have a different version."
Seriously, these two parrots need to stop squawking and start brawling! If they don't want to take part in an oiled up cage fight, they can do a good old-fashioned dance off! I bet you Clint can make that ass clap like we were at the opera.

bl- Eastwood has a big ego - all directors have big egos - how do you think they survive in hollyweird? So Black directors aren't supposed to have big egos. Eastwood choice to have no Black actors in his war films is historically inaccurate - that is all Spike Lee is saying. So the the big white director can't take some criticism? If Eastwood was telling some quiet, personal story about a soldier in war - well that is another thing. But he set out to make a Hollywood version of a history - so he is open to criticism, just as Oliver Stone has been criticized, and other directors. Eastwood is an entertaining fillmmaker - but no one should be on a pedestal - no one (well maybe me).
There is no doubt Spike is right that minorities are under-represented in the media. He could have just said that. Instead he uses a bad example to illustrate his point. And use the controversy to bring attention to the movie he has coming out soon.

No excuse dude :). Im sure you saw Citizen Cane, or Raging Bull or the Blues Brothers. For the true Spike Lee experience, I recommend Do the Right Thing. It's highlight's different racial perspectives and will suprise the fuck out of you. Malcom X is a damn good film too. Check these out and tell me they aren't hits :)

Well I don't know about the American army but there was only one battalion in Canada's during WWII that were black and they didn't see as much action as white soldiers due to prejudices, by and large they did ditch digging and saw little real action until late in the war when people weren't enlisting (which is the reason why they were allowed in, low enlistment). This was due to the prejudices of the time, and I'm sure it was very similar situation in the United States, if not more so due to legal segregation at the time in many states.
I agree that there needs to be a more multicultural representation on the big and small screen, however that won't change while the majority of the US population remains as Caucasians, which at this point it is.
And don't forget Girl 8 - Spike's best bomb.
I agree with Spike. Minorities, in general, are underrepresented in the media.

Um, The Inside Man, The 25th Hour, Malcolm X(oldies tho)...Jungle Fever, Do the Right Thing. If you are talking about hits in term of movie quality, then these are defintiely hits. Just read any critics reviews. If you are talking about hits in terms of ticket sales, there are plenty of hits at the box office that are just plain 'ol stoopid. I thought No Country for Old Men, ending was terrible. The movie seemed incomplete. But this movie won a shit load of awards. So, the term "hits" is a matter of opinion.
Spike Lee is a poignant director. But he will never win an Oscar, if you think that's what's supposed to equate success in the cinematic circle. I think Clint Eastwood is a great director as well. Both directors have two different syles of cinema. So to compare films is difficult and is a matter of taste. I prefer Spike Lee to Clint because I can relate more to the sociological context of Spike's films.
We all know that minorities have never been represented well in Hollywood. Fuck, it's a KNOWN fact. What suprises me is the comtempt that people have about the subject when someone finally has the guts to say so. White films comprise the majority of the films that are green-lighted, so I dont think reverse racism could ever be a valid argument.

PS. I can believe that due to prejudice blacks in WWII were not photographed, but that does not lead to the conclusion that photographs containing whites really contained blacks.
It bears mentioning that the US army integrated long before the rest of the country did, though WWII was early days on that one.

Since when can't one filmmaker bitch about another filmmaker? And since when can't someone point out the historic inaccuracy of a film? Isn't that what civil society is about? Dialogue?
Eastwood started off as a mediocre director - and improved as his experience improved. Eastwood is a very influential, powerful man in Hollywood (partly because he shoots on time and on budget) - so he's been able parley that into more and more films - and more and more films. (apparently he is also quite nasty to "underlings".)
Spike Lee is a loud mouth - but so fucking what? Does that mean he should shut-up? I think the point is to speak truth to power.
And by the way - Spike Lee sued SpikeTV b/c back in the 90s, Spike had started a company based on his name, selling merchandise - and I believe there was an effort to create video-game/media brand using his name.

And btw, there was one movie made about blacks in WWII called The Tuskegee Airmen, almost exclusively black, but that was due to the social customs of that era. I wonder what Spike would have said if someone complained about that movie like he complained about Clint's movie.

i guess i take tremendous issue with the whole spike lee running his mouth thing because we are not in the 1800's and before, and african americans were not the only people treated badly by whites. american indians were treated abominably, starved, driven from thier lands, killed. why doesnt mr. lee, if he truly is just sticking up for underdogs, get upset about that? i'm quite certain there were also American Indians that probably fought in the war. Thanks, Mrs K. That was cool. My dad was a Marine in WWII who fought his way up the South Pacific to Tokyo Bay in the last year of the war (so he missed Iwo Jima). He never mentioned any black Marines and none of his pix show any, but that's far from conclusive, I guess.
