And We're Off!
Earlier, I posted about how Clint Eastwood said Spike Lee needs too "shut his face" after Spike said he was pissed off that Clint didn't feature any African American soldiers in a couple of his war movies.
Spike has responded to ABC News! Spike said, "First of all, the man is not my father and we're not on a plantation either."
Escandalo! You better duck. Clint is going to throw his caramel squares at Spike.
He went on to say, "He's a great director. He makes his films, I make my films. The thing about it though, I didn't personally attack him. And a comment like 'a guy like that should shut his face' -- come on Clint, come on. He sounds like an angry old man right there."
Angry old man? Yup, that sounds like Clint. What's Spike's point?
"If he wishes, I could assemble African-American men who fought at Iwo Jima and I'd like him to tell these guys that what they did was insignificant and they did not exist. I'm not making this up. I know history. I'm a student of history. And I know the history of Hollywood and its omission of the one million African-American men and women who contributed to WWII. Not everything was John Wayne, baby." YES! That's the way I like, Spike. Nice and dirty.
Spike finished with, "In his vision of Iwo Jima, Negro soldiers did not exist. Simple as that. I have a different version."
Seriously, these two parrots need to stop squawking and start brawling! If they don't want to take part in an oiled up cage fight, they can do a good old-fashioned dance off! I bet you Clint can make that ass clap like we were at the opera.

Let me guess. You prolly laughed histerically and manically in the "Nigger Storage Scene".
Oh and talent is a matter of opinion.
You're very funny. The Kings of Comedy is just a title and doesnt imply that the three comedians featured are any better than your favorite comedians. Yes, whites can be kings too.
I think your post is an example that hate and bigotry still exists.

Spike rightly said that there were African Americans in the regiments the films are about and he wanted to know why not one black man was portrayed. I think that's an honest beef. No one is calling Eastwood a racist, simply calling him to task on an artistic choice that was made. That's the nature of the beast when you pick the arts. People are allowed to be called out on their choices. Lee had to answer many a critic, Eastwood's turn now.

If Eastwood's movie was a chronicle of the entire war, then yes, that point would be valid. It's not. His movie is about those iconic photographs, and the people were in them. The newsreel journalists that were responsible for taking those photographs turned their cameras away from all the black and Hispanic soldiers who were there. That is totally not Eastwood's fault. Trying to impose today's standards on a period piece would be re-writing history.
Movie, not documentary. Movie.

Hi Kizzy. I was trying to specify to biglebowski what Spike said and meant. I dont agree with what Spike said in a historical context since there was segregation in those times. However, I do agree that minorities are under-represented in Hollywood and that maybe Spike could have sited a better example.

Because it doesn't pertain to the story Eastwood was telling. You are right about most people seemingly getting their history lessons from movies. If they forget that a movie is telling a story, and is not a completely factual account, that's their own ignorance showing, and not something the director should be blamed for.

The problem is the whole Negro caste system(if you will) was an after affect of the opressive slave mentality that whites imposed on blacks during the slave trade that has trickle down into our culture's subconcous fabric.
You are definitely correct about it being a problem amongst our race, but I dont think nepotism is the right word for it. This is something that we are still trying to overcome as a race. On the same vein, Hollywood's standard of beauty doesnt help our intra-racial issues either, but you have to ask yourself who sets these standards?
You are right again about this being ridiculous. I cant say Spike was thinking when made this statement in lieu of the historical context of the second world war, but your statement about us being one race, is philosophical and utopian at best. As much as I'd like to say that we are all one race, the fact of the matter is, the people who feel this way are in the minority and usually arent minorities.

And I'm really sorry all that happened. I'm sorry society was not open minded enough then to recognize what thebiglebowski so eloquently stated--we are all the same race, just different colors. I do pray for the day when we can look at each other and no longer see color as a difference, and that women are as capable as men. Nobody here is disputing the fact that racism still exists. It just simply does not apply to the story that was detailed in Eastwood's film. For Spike to insinuate it was a racial move on Eastwood's part, is wrong. It wasn't. The Native American aspect was brought up because one of the flag-raisers was a Native American. Eastwood cast a Native American to play his part.

It's unfortunate that Spike had to get underhanded by calling Clint an angry old man and peppering his comments with inciting words like plantation because it takes away from the legitimate point which is unfortunately most people now get their 'history lessons' from mainstream movies. The fact is they put tremendous effort in trying to make movies as 'real' as possible through historically accurate costumes, people learning new accents etc so the question is why wouldn't we represent a group of people in this 'depiction of history' who we know for a fact were contributors and have historically have had their contributions marginalized.
i dont get this, because it makes no sense. theres a difference between taking pride in you heritage and dragging this country down because of it. get over it man. it didnt happen to you, did it?? it happened to your grandfather, your great grandfather. you want to live in this country and complain about how you got here. you werent a slave.. neither was your father, or your father's father...slavery has not existed in this country since 1867, and i'm sure someone will correct me on the date, but where do you get off being pissed off? it wasnt done to you. i didnt do it to you. my father, my grandfather, my great grandfather didnt even do it to you. in fact in michigan, we didnt even use slaves. we were manufacturers. that's how we beat the souths ass. you act like it was done to you, like you just came from a slave ship when the truth is, you were born into liberty and there's always prejudice, no matter if you're skin is black, blue, yellow, or green. you can stutter, you can limp, you can be too tall, to short, anything...stop fucking whining

Well then, since Spike is educated enough to observe the inaccuracies that Clint made while making a movie that is predominantly historical in content, how the fuck is he wrong? The majority here is obviously white and no ability to identify with reality. You people act as if racism still doesn't exist. Ask yourself this, who benefits from racism? Damn sure isn't this blackman. Who has benefitted from the suffering that all minorities have endured in this country? When I was in school, my teacher didn't teach me that there was a place called Liberia, where ex-slaves went after so-called slavery was ended. My point is you white people like to lie & use smoke & mirrors to fool people, always trying to distort the truth. Think "we too dumb" to see through your bullshit. Couple of you even had the audacity to mention the American Indians. Great!! Remember what you did to them? How you committed genocide against that race of people?? The same history that Clint got his facts from tells that story. What Spike Lee is saying is give us our fucking 40Acres & the mule that you promised and never delivered. Fine, I'll say it.
THERE ARE NO PHOTOGRAPHS OF AFRICAN AMERICAN SOLDIERS PARTICIPATING IN WWII DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE NEWSREEL JOURNALISTS TURNED THEIR CAMERAS AWAY FROM THEM WHEN THEY WERE TAKING THEIR ICONIC PHOTOGRAPHS.
Since the premise of Clint's film is based upon those iconic photographs, he can hardly be blamed for that, can he?

Yes, Clint is an angry old man, but Spike has GOT to get a fucking hint and realize that his race relations bullshit, however pertinent it may still be, is just tired and off-putting at this point. Seriously, let someone else speak for your race for a change - someone who won't throw around the "I know this, I've studied this" Tom Cruise crap. Sure Spike, I'm sure you're an ace historian. Yes, there were black soldiers in World War II, and they deserve to be acknowledged, and perhaps Clint could've thrown in a few token "Negro" extras in the background to please the Spike Lees of the world (seriously? "Negro"? Is that a word most black people even use anymore?). They're both self-important douches, but at least Clint Eastwood is still making decent movies.
- Yes we still say Negro. I try and say it at least once a day.It makes my teeth whiter. It's usually used in a candid context.
- Oh and Spike Lee has made a decent film if you count The Inside Man as recent('06 I believe). He's a bit more conrotversial than Clint, so Im sure he has a limited studio-base to work with.

It was mentioned earlier, about the documentary featured on PBS, that director went back and catalogued the stories of Hispanics who participated, due to pressure from Hispanic groups.
I don't think anyone is trying to negate the contribution of Hispanics or blacks, but when you do a period piece, you have to keep in mind the way it was then. Not that it's right, of course it wasn't. But that's how it was. When you make a film based on an iconic photograph, and those that comprised the subject of that photograph, and there weren't any photographs of blacks and Hispanics taken then, it's not right to blame Eastwood for that. It's a movie, not a documentary. It's just that neither Hispanics nor blacks were pertinent to the story that Clint was telling. Not that they weren't there, or that they didn't contribute, they just simply were not included in photographs.

Right. Blacks and whites are the only ones who contributed to U.S. history. Because that's exactly what everyone here has been saying, right? Except I didn't see it any where on this forum. And thanks for calling us "typical". You might as well go stand next to Spike.
this shouldnt even be a issue. spike lee should not be attacking a director for not depicting blacks the way he wants, he should be going to him in brotherhood and saying lets work togoether
my point is my friends that this whole thing is ridiculous. spike lee is wrong for making such statements when so many african americans have worked so hard. we're not two sepeerate races people. we're the same race, different colors. it's human nature to pick on anyone that we think dumber, scarred inadequete. we pick on the kid with the stutter, we pick on the kid with one leg shorter than the other...but i'm sure.. that African americans never pick on thier own kind. and that is what you want us to believe. that you're victims. a long time ago, yeah. not now. you never picked on anyone in school? as far as i know, even during civil war times there was different classes of african americans. the house servants and the field workers, and the house servants thought the field worker were beneath them...so hmmmm, i guess that's nepotism within you're own race, is it not???

Ouch!
Although I feel for you cuz having psoriasis sucks, you can't compare that to the plight that African Americans have had in the history of the US. There is treatment for many ailments, but no treatments for being black, or hispanic, or indian, or asian for that matter. I'm sure your psoriasis got better or you grew tougher skin. I rather be called a leper than a nigger any day. You can cover your ailments but not your skin color. You can't justify that comparison.
Also, Spike didnt say that that Clint's film should have at least ONE story-line that evolved around a black character, he said there should have been at least ONE black soldier in the film, whether in the back-ground or extras.

Spike needs to go make his own film about WWII. Where does he get off dictating what other filmmakers should make? Granted, minorities are underrepresented in film, but do something about it, don't whine about it. That was a cheap shot, and, quite frankly, I'm surprised Eastwood fell for it.

Everyone can take some criticism. And I am sure Eastwood will take plenty of criticism when his next movie - The biopic of Nelson Mandela - comes out. Pretty ironic that Spike chooses Eastwood as a target. Clint actually seems to like us black folks. Go pick on Woody Allen.

Well I don't know about the American army but there was only one battalion in Canada's during WWII that were black and they didn't see as much action as white soldiers due to prejudices, by and large they did ditch digging and saw little real action until late in the war when people weren't enlisting (which is the reason why they were allowed in, low enlistment). This was due to the prejudices of the time, and I'm sure it was very similar situation in the United States, if not more so due to legal segregation at the time in many states.
-Good point. I dont think Spike was thinking when he said this, considering the segregation in the armed forces during this time period. Later US wars should be a different story after the 50's.
I agree that there needs to be a more multicultural representation on the big and small screen, however that won't change while the majority of the US population remains as Caucasians, which at this point it is.
- This wont be for long. Hispanics are due to be the majority in 2020 according to the US consensus.
And don't forget Girl 8 - Spike's best bomb.
