Earlier, I posted about how Clint Eastwood said Spike Lee needs too "shut his face" after Spike said he was pissed off that Clint didn't feature any African American soldiers in a couple of his war movies.
Spike has responded to ABC News! Spike said, "First of all, the man is not my father and we're not on a plantation either."
Escandalo! You better duck. Clint is going to throw his caramel squares at Spike.
He went on to say, "He's a great director. He makes his films, I make my films. The thing about it though, I didn't personally attack him. And a comment like 'a guy like that should shut his face' -- come on Clint, come on. He sounds like an angry old man right there."
Angry old man? Yup, that sounds like Clint. What's Spike's point?
"If he wishes, I could assemble African-American men who fought at Iwo Jima and I'd like him to tell these guys that what they did was insignificant and they did not exist. I'm not making this up. I know history. I'm a student of history. And I know the history of Hollywood and its omission of the one million African-American men and women who contributed to WWII. Not everything was John Wayne, baby." YES! That's the way I like, Spike. Nice and dirty.
Spike finished with, "In his vision of Iwo Jima, Negro soldiers did not exist. Simple as that. I have a different version."
Seriously, these two parrots need to stop squawking and start brawling! If they don't want to take part in an oiled up cage fight, they can do a good old-fashioned dance off! I bet you Clint can make that ass clap like we were at the opera.

Excellent point. Spike Lee is, after all, thee most important Black filmmaker of all time...well, besides Oscar Micheaux, and would best suited for the task. He's certainly more relevant, in film history (as in I didn't watch any Clint films in my Film History classes in school, but we did get into some Spike), than Clint Eastwood, a two-bit spaghetti western pepaw-turned director. Spike should slap the Polident out of Clint's face and film THAT!

In the war - white, black, native, asian, latino - etc. fought and died side-by-side, even if the battalions were black or white or asian or native. That is war - sorry to shake up the little theory here. When you are in war - you fight together, even if your unit is segregated. The generals may send in a black segregated unit - but right next to it will be a white unit - and guess what, they will be working together. And many of the black marines at iwo jima were engineers, so they were preparing the site for the other marines - probably standing side-by-side with them - not over on the black side of the battlefield. Jeeesh.
Spike Lee isn't saying one of the guys who lifted the set-up shot of putting up the flag was black - he is saying blacks were at Iwo Jima - and that should've been depicted in the film - not as one of the men who lifted the flag - but as fighting at Iwo Jima. Do you get the distinction?

Sorry, Spike, but the Marine Corps was SEGREGATED in 1945; African-Americans served in defense battalions and supply units, not infantry regiments, which is what Flags of Our Fathers depicts. I don't think there were any African-Americans in the Japanese Army, so don't expect to see them in Letters from Iwo Jima, either. Eastwood did his research for both films, and would have depicted African-American Marines if they were part of the story.
As for Miracle of St. Anna, well, I have read it, and it contains many RIDICULOUS historical inaccuracies, indicating that the author (who is also writing the screenplay for the movie) did little or no research. Looks like Lee has not done any either, or he would have picked a better book to make a movie out of. His criticism of Eastwood is just plain childish.

Spike Lee isn't saying tell a story about a specific Black Marine - he's saying there were Black Marines in Iwo Jima - and there were no visible Black actors in Eastwood's film. The photo was a device into the bigger story of Iwo Jima - into America at War. Using the specific to tell the universal - to reveal bigger truths. If we assume there is a propaganda element to war films - even if it is anti-war or pro-war, or just to promote a fuzzy feeling about America - then Eastwood could very easily include the reality of Black presence at Iwo Jima. By leaving out the reality of many Black Marines, Navy, etc at Iwo Jima is disingenuous at best.
