Author Emily Giffin Is Very Sorry For Hating On Meghan Markle

In honor of Archie Mountbatten-Windsor’s first birthday yesterday, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry released a video of her reading the book Duck! Rabbit! to Archie.  It was a cute moment that raised a little money for Save The Children UK and showed us that Archie is a normal, ordinary baby who sometimes can’t be bothered to wear pants. Although, author Emily Giffin didn’t think it was cute and responded with a mixed bag of yucks, ews, how dare theys, and that hand motion where you stick a finger down your throat and pretend to gag. But she’s sorry about that now.

Emily Giffin is the author of Something Borrowed (which was turned into a movie that came out in 2011), and subsequent books with marriage-related titles and pastel covers.

According to Us Weekly, Emily took to her Instagram after Meghan and Harry posted Archie’s birthday video, and accused Meghan of all manner of things, including, but not limited to, stealing the focus away from Archie, violating Archie’s privacy, being fake, not putting pants on Archie, not letting Harry read the story instead, not looking maternal, and being a bad actress. Emily posted her thoughts on her own personal Instagram to her 85,600 followers, then went to an account called @what.meghan.wants to leave some hate in their comments. Emily Giffin’s Instagram is private, but here’s some screenshots via Jezebel and Kaitlin Menza:

Many people on social media have called Emily out for going in on Meghan, especially considering it was just a harmless video of a mom reading her baby a story on his birthday. This isn’t Emily’s first time showing that she’s really invested in all things Meghan Markle. She posted this comment in response to an article about the double standard between how the press treats Duchess Kate and Meghan.

After all of the hate that Emily got, she took it upon herself to do some damage control. Emily posted an Instagram post explaining that she used to love Meghan, but that she hated the way Meghan and Harry quit their jobs as senior royals in January. Emily also swears she’s not one of those racist Meghan-haters, and apologized for dragging Meghan so harshly.

“I enjoy following celebrities and analyzing them with my readers. I post dozens of IG stories a day in a very honest, unfiltered way, as if I’m confiding directly with close friends. Further, I’m very interested in the British monarchy. I always have been. See the link in my bio for an essay I wrote in the days before Meghan and Harry wed. To be clear, I absolutely loved that a biracial, American woman was marrying into the Royal Family. It seemed a wonderful, happy thing for everyone. I celebrated their wedding by hosting a gathering here at my home and posting many, many photos. Further, I was appalled by any signs of racism against her.

Over recent months my feelings about BOTH Harry and Meghan changed. But I can say from the bottom of my heart that my criticism of Meghan has never had anything to do with her race. Further, I understood why she wanted to leave the monarchy and carve out her own path. I do, however, find fault with the way BOTH she and Harry handled things, and those feelings bled over in later posts, including the ones today.

I can see how some of my posts may have felt mean-spirited, and could be construed as having racial undertones. It was not my intent, but I understand that intent and impact are two very different things. And I am truly sorry for that negative impact.”

That’s a lot of words to say: Help, I think I’m about to get dumped by my publisher!

Emily swore that her hatred of the Sussexes is directed at BOTH Meghan and Harry. But all of her hate about Archie’s birthday video was directed at Meghan.

So basically, Emily probably isn’t making any new fans with that sad attempt at an apology. Well, that’s not true. Her social media accounts are currently set to private, but we might get a clue about the status of her fandom if she updates her Twitter bio. It currently reads: “Mother, author, royal watcher.” Soon, it’ll probably read: “Mother, author, person who won’t stop getting DMs from Thomas and Samantha Markle telling me how much they loved my latest novel.
