Kylie Jenner Threw A Handmaid’s Tale-Themed Birthday Party

Kylie Jenner must have gotten jealous of  Kylie Skin getting dragged up and down the internet, and decided she wanted a bunch of bad attention for herself. Well, she got it, and all she had to do was decide that The Handmaid’s Tale would be a fun LOL-worthy theme for her friend’s birthday party.

A Handmaid’s Tale, the book, and its recently-adapted TV series, The Handmaid’s Tale, is about a dystopian future where women have no bodily autonomy, and many are forced by rape to make babies. In current-day America, multiple states have successfully passed extremely restrictive anti-abortion laws. So basically, there are some very awkward, shitty similarities between the two. But I guess all Kylie saw was an excuse to get drunk and wear a hat that looks like an unrolled condom.

Kylie threw a 22nd birthday party for her childhood friend Stassie Karanikolaou on Saturday night, and leaned in hard to the theme. Kylie and friends, like Sofia Richie above, wore red handmaid capes and dresses, adopted handmaid-style names signifying who they “belong” to (like Sofia being Ofscott, for her boyfriend Scott Disick), and addressing all the men as “Commander” while acting subservient. Hired staff were dressed as “Marthas” (servants), and party drinks inspired by the show, like “Under His Eye Tequila.” What, no Aunt Lydia’s Knockout Punch? Come on Kylie, if you’re going to joke about a show centered around oppression and abuse, at least go all the way.

Kylie claimed in her Instagram stories that she chose the theme, because The Handmaid’s Tale was her favorite TV show ever. What her friend Stassie’s favorite TV show is, is irrelevant, apparently.

A lot of people thought what Kylie did was beyond tone-deaf, and they let her have it online.

Kylie is a high school equivalency graduate that lives in a billion-dollar bubble, so you’ll have to cut her some slack if she’d not able to see that her party was in the poorest of taste. And maybe she doesn’t take it so seriously because it doesn’t look that strange and shocking to her. It’s a TV show about a group of women who all look and dress the same, who lived in a closed-off society with other rich people, whose only hope of maintaining relevancy and power is to keep spawning. Am I still talking about The Handmaids Tale? I’m not sure. Under her Botoxed eye!
