Ceramic ballerina slippers!

Last month, BuzzFeed posted a list titled: If You’re A Woman Between The Ages Of 35-44, Then These 38 Things Will Be A Warm Nostalgia Hug. It could’ve also been titled: If You’re A Gay Man Between The Ages Of 35-44, Then These 38 Things Are Shit You Wanted As A Child But Your Closed-Minded Parents Wouldn’t Dare Get You Girls Stuff! One of the things on the list that truly transported me back to the 80s was a pair of exquisitely artistic ceramic ballerina shoes that three out of four girls had hanging in their bedroom at the time. True fact. It seems like in the 1980s, if you were a girl, your bedroom wall magically shit up a pair of ceramic ballerina shoes as soon as you turned 12.

My sister and I shared a bedroom up until I was around 7 when my mom had an extra bedroom illegally built in our garage and banished me there. (If only I knew it was illegal then. I could’ve narc’d on them, sending them to prison, and the entire house would’ve been mine!) So that’s when my sister did her room up as she wanted, and that’s when the classic ceramic ballerina slippers went up on her wall. They were right next to that iconic poster of some rat-chewed ballet slippers over piss yellow tights covered with moth-eaten leg warmers.

I have no idea what happened to my sister’s classic ceramic ballerina slippers. They were an important part of her bedroom for many years until she left for college, and I moved into that room and took over. I either kept them up, donated them to the Louvre (who obviously wanted all of the ceramic ballerina slipper wall art from the 80s and 90s), or I broke them years and years before by trying them on to play “White Nights.” Definitely the third.
