Dionne Warwick Doesn’t Think That Beyonce Is An Icon Yet, And Of Course The Beyhive Came For Her

Seen above getting her slappin’ hand ready for any Beyhivers who want to get the stingers slapped off of them by coming after her, Dionne Warwick told zero lies when she said that there are no new musical icons and not even Beyonce has reached that status yet. I should say that Dionne wasn’t totally telling the truth when she said that a musical artiste of today has yet to be crowned an icon for the ages. I mean, has Cousin Dionne’s ears felt the sweet humping of Jan Terri yet?

Essence did a video interview with 78-year-old Dionne about her new album She’s Back, which is a perfect name, because she’s back in every way including telling young tricks what’s what. Dionne was asked if any songs from today’s youngins are “classics.” While your local oldies and classics radio station is making you check into Shady Pines by playing shit like “Genie In A Bottle,” Dionne doesn’t think any of today’s artists have yodeled out a classic yet. Dionne says she isn’t throwing shade, but then she threw a little shade by saying that the fetuses who have been in the game for 20 years are probably surprised that they’re still in the game and not doing the rumba for a check on Dancing with the Has-Beens.

“I don’t know if 10 years from now, anybody can actually sing the songs of our babies today. That’s not, as you guys say, ‘throwing shade,’ it’s looking at it with reality.

When you speak of folks who have been in the industry, recording for as long as I have, and my peers, these babies, and that’s what I call them, who are approaching maybe 20 years, maybe, which is kind of amusing to me cause I’m certain that none of them thought they would even last that long. But since they have, when they get into the 50/60 year range, that’s when you can start saying that maybe there’s a classic hidden somewhere amongst them. But at this moment, I don’t see it. I just don’t. I certain appreciate the fact that the youngsters are doing it. I mean, they are doing it.”

Dionne then brought up Beyonce, and she pretty much only had nice things to say about the Queen Bee God of the Beyhive. But Dionne did add that Beyonce hasn’t joined the ranks of icons and it’ll be a while.

“I have an admiration for Beyoncé Knows. Carter, now. Watching her grow has been quite refreshing. It’s wonderful to see how she’s been able to create what and who she wanted to be and who she is. Very proud of that. I really am. Now sustaining and become the icon like Gladys Knight, or Patti LaBelle, or Johnny Mathis, or Frank Sinatra, or Sammy Davis Jr. is? I doubt that. I really do. I love her to death and you  know I can appreciate her talent. But that iconic status that I just mentioned before? Those names? It’s a long road.”

What Dionne said wasn’t even negative and wouldn’t even make the cut in a Got 2B Real episode, but if you don’t use your tongue to fully lick the places where Beysus has stepped, the Beyhive will issue an attack on you. And some did, so Dionne’s Twitter account later tried to clear things up by blaming it on Essence even though there’s video of her saying those words.

“What I said is in quotes. What @Essence said is not. It takes a long time to reach and achieve iconic status. That’s not to say that Beyoncé isn’t well on her way. She is a gifted performer. That was a reach from Essence.”

That tweet was later deleted. But Entertainment Tonight interviewed Dionne, and she once again said that it takes 50 or 60 years to achieve icon status.

Dionne’s Twitter page is fairly active (she’s got an Instagram page, but even though it’s “approved by Dionne Warwick” it’s not verified and has been quiet since 2015), but I refuse to believe she’s the one doing the tweeting. So I don’t think that tweet came from her. Twitter hasn’t been around long enough to reach icon status in the communications game, so Dionne doesn’t bother with it. I doubt she even knows what the Beyhive is, let alone that those young hussies are trying to come for her. If the Beyhive really wants Dionne to know how they feel, they need to fax her a page full of bee emojis or call her “old and irrelevant” in a certified letter. Even then, she’d ignore their hate like it was a notice from the IRS. Don’t try it with the number-getting, hussy-destroying warrior empress.
