Pepper Pal!

Oh, the 1980s, the fucked-up era of foolery when nobody called 911 on a dog named “Peeper Pal” whose eyes light up all creepy-like whenever a child hugged him while falling asleep. Evil bitch didn’t even try to hide the fact that he was a not-so-secret agent working for PedoBear. No, no, Peeper Pal was a gold-hearted (or polyester fluff-hearted if you want to get scientific about it) guardian whose eyes lit up and opened wide whenever a child hugged him while falling asleep, because he wanted to keep a lookout for evil and danger. Yeah, that’s it!

Peeper Pal was made by Galoob and came out at the very end of the 80s in 1989. It was a line of plushie puppy friends in pajamas whose cracked out eyes lit up whenever they were hugged. The commercial, which may or may not have starred Chrissie Seaver from Growing Pains, was also a thing of nightmares thanks to the jingle which featured these lyrics: “Pepper Pals, I got my eye on you…. I like what happens when I hold you tight.” This is like the kid version of Every Breath You Take.

I don’t know what’s scarier: being a child and waking up to find Peeper Pal staring at you in the middle of the night. Or being a parent and walking in to find that your child is now an 80-year-old grandma because waking up to Pepper Pal staring at them aged them 75 years.
