I’m going to assume when Rihanna sang the freelancers anthem Bitch Better Have My Money back in 2016, she never thought she’d be belting out those words to her very own father. However, greed will turn even the closet family members into your archenemy, and in today’s epic battle Rih Rih is suing her messy father Ronald Fenty for misusing the Fenty brand name for his own financial gain.
TMZ reports that in 2017, Ronald was probably sitting at home when it finally dawned on him that he, too, has the last name Fenty so he started a talent development company called Fenty Entertainment which was a big mistake. And here’s why. You see, Rihanna owns the trademark on the name Fenty and she’s been using it for many of her business ventures, including the super successful Fenty Beauty line of cosmetics. Meanwhile Daddy Ronald (which sounds like a great name for a pimp by the way) and another business partner must have forgotten to erase the paper trail leading back to their greedy asses, because they lied about being Rihanna’s reps and through Fenty Entertainment, attempted to book her for 15 shows throughout Latin America in December 2017, totaling around $15 million.
And if that wasn’t bad enough, Daddy Ronald also attempted to file a trademark with the Fenty name to partner with resort boutique hotels. But the truly sad part of this story is that while Ronald was off being the Fenty family’s version of Joanne The Scammer, Rihanna was completely clueless about what was going on. She took action immediately after finding out about Daddy Ronald’s schemes.
She says she’s sent multiple cease and desist letters to her father, ordering him to stop capitalizing off of her Fenty trademarks, but says he’s ignored them and continued to make money off of Fenty Entertainment.
She’s asking a judge to place an injunction on her dad using the name Fenty … and, of course, for damages.
Can you imagine how awkward it must be to have to sue your own father over the name he gave you? I mean, she’s 100% right to do so but that has to be really weird. Like, they’ll be at the trial and the judge will ask Ronald to state his name. He’ll probably have to look over at her for permission to say Fenty because if not she may tack on another lawsuit for not honoring the cease and desist order.
