There are going to be a lot of lonely abandoned razors on store shelves and empty wax salons this month, because there’s a new movement taking place in 2019 and that movement is titled Januhairy. Yup, that’s right, take out a permanent marker and cross out January from your calendars because that shit is so last year. This new movement is designed to empower women to stop shaving their body hair as a statement that you can still be sexy even if your legs are furrier than Chewbacca in a bear skin rug.
Contrary to what you may be thinking, this movement was created by UK drama student Laura Jackson and not by a woman named Jan who became insulted when a friend said to her in passing “Jan, you hairy.” Taking a tip from Movember (that shit in November when don’t shave their faces), Laura states that the idea of Januhairy grew from all the inner feels she received after she stopped shaving for an upcoming role. After constructing an Instagram page dedicated to the movement she posted a quick introduction.
In an effort to spread her message Laura has created a Crowdfunding page where the proceeds will go to the body-positivity organization Body Gossip, which teaches the importance of people presenting the best versions of themselves through Arts & Education. So far the movement has many people tossing their razors into the trash and literally letting their hair down to participate in the Januhairy extravaganza.
This isn’t necessarily a new concept as a few celebrities such as Madonna and her daughter Lourdes have both been celebrating the positivity of their body hair for years.Take for instance this post from New Year’s Eve 2017.
If Laura needs a spokesperson maybe she should reach out to Madge and Lil’ Madge because I’m sure they’d be down to participate. And you know what? I think I’ll join in on this movement as well. Mainly because I already don’t shave my legs or pits so in all honesty I should probably be suing Laura instead for copying my look.
