Christina Aguilera Is Glad Lady Gaga Is Zapping Away The R. Kelly Version Of “Do What U Want”

It’s awards season, Lady Gaga just lost the Golden Globe she thought she had a lock on to Glenn Close, and Mother Monster is taking off her gloves to hopefully win an Oscar! Lifetime has everyone finally issuing major mea culpas (and mea culpas for their mea culpas) for agreeing to work with R. Kelly in the past after they came out with the documentary Surviving R. Kelly. Gaga was just one of those people. She didn’t take part in the documentary – but she finally issued a statement saying she’s sorry and will pull Do What U Want, the song she did with him. And Christina Aguilera, who replaced R. Kelly as Gaga’s duet partner in one version of the song, is elated.

Gaga announced yesterday that she’s removing the R. Kelly version of Do What U Want from all streaming services considering all the ongoing furor post-Lifetime documentary about what a fucking sicko R. Kelly is. Gaga said that version of her song came at a time when she was kind of a mess and purposefully trying to stoke the controversy flames (um, is that phase actually over?). Lesser people (ME! ME! ME!) think Gaga is just trying to clean up that image in time to win a Best Actress Oscar for A Star Is Born, but Xtina is a firm believer in Gaga and is standing by her side:

“This is a reminder of women sticking together — and not letting a man take ownership of a great song/moment.”

R. Kelly’s lawyer denied on CBS this morning any wrongdoing by his client and said women in the documentary who said they were victims were “ruining a talented musician’s career.” This is also a reminder that, with R. Kelly’s version of the song off Spotify, Christina’s Gaga duet will be the one to rack up future streams. I’m sure that also wasn’t driving her sisterhood bonding. Here’s her whole ‘gram about it:

Cool to see the version of this song I did with @ladygaga on the charts again — this is a reminder of women sticking together— and not letting a man take ownership of a great song/ moment… And if anything the message of this song remains that although you may have had my body, you will never have my heart, my voice my life or my mind. Being a survivor of past predators myself, these lines spoke to me, which is why I did the song. I embrace all survivors of sexual and domestic violence and abuse holding a special place in my heart, and you @ladygaga, for doing the right thing! ?

I did completely forget Christina holding Gaga to her bosom (like my mom has to do to me anytime I want Chick-fil-A on a Sunday) during their performance of the song on The Voice was FAR better than Gaga’s Terry Richardson-directed dumpster fire of a music video with R. Kelly.
