According To The BAFTA Nominations, Everybody Loves “The Favourite”

Nominations for the Pinky’s Up Oscars, aka the BAFTA Awards, were announced in London today and The Gagabot 3000 is one more step closer to achieving its goal of total global domination. Lady Gaga was nominated for the 99th Leading Actress out of a room filled with 100 Leading Actresses for A Star Is Born. Joining her are Glenn Close (#98 for The Wife), Melissa McCarthy (#97 for Can You Ever Forgive Me), Olivia Coleman (#96 for The Favourite), and Viola Davis (#95 for Widows). It’s kind of crazy that the Tea & Crumpets Oscars only has one British person nominated in this category. Maybe they have an exchange program with the Fully Loaded Fries Oscars, since we always seem to nominate entire villages full of British actors for our little award show comes up.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Favourite was the most nominated picture of the year with 12 nominations.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ dark comedy came away with 12 nominations, shortlisted in most of the main categories, significantly ahead of Bohemian Rhapsody, First Man, Roma and A Star Is Born, which each received seven nominations. Elsewhere, a broad spread of love was shown by BAFTA’s 6,500 voting members across a range of titles, with most films considered to be part of the awards race getting at least one nomination. Vice landed six, BlacKkKlansman five, and Cold War and Green Book four. Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Mary Poppins Returns, Mary Queen of Scots and Stan & Ollie all received three each.

If Bohemian Rhapsody somehow manages to win Outstanding British Film, things could get super awkward because Bryan Singer, the movie’s disgraced director, is named in the nomination alongside producer Graham King and screenwriter Anthony McCarten. Given the cold shoulder Bryan received when BR won the GG for Best Drama, the BAFTA’s might bring some of the high drama we were missing from the Golden Globes. Fingers crossed!
