Kevin Hart Will Host The 2019 Oscars

December 5, 2018 / Posted by:

It was just yesterday that The Hollywood Reporter said that nobody wants to host the Oscars on February 24, 2019. Clearly there’s someone brave enough to take one for the team and accept what THR called the “least wanted job in Hollywood,” and it’s Kevin Hart.

During THR’s story yesterday on no one wanting the gig, they suggested that Kevin Hart might be right for the job because he’s “funny without being tasteless.” The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences must agree. Kevin made the announcement on Instagram:

For years I have been asked if I would ever Host the Oscars and my answer was always the same…I said that it would be the opportunity of a lifetime for me as a comedian and that it will happen when it’s suppose to. I am so happy to say that the day has finally come for me to host the Oscars. I am blown away simply because this has been a goal on my list for a long time….To be able to join the legendary list of host that have graced that stage is unbelievable. I know my mom is smiling from ear to ear right now. I want to thank my family/friends/fans for supporting me & riding with me all this time….I will be sure to make this years Oscars a special one. I appreciate the @TheAcademy for the opportunity ….now it’s time to rise to the occasion #Oscars

This will be Kevin’s first time hosting the show. Note to Oscars security: be on the lookout for an older man in sweatpants trying to pass himself off as a seat filler. Although Kevin has presented in the past, so it won’t be a totally weird experience for him to look into the audience and see the Oscars’ unofficial female mascot (Meryl Streep) staring back at him.

The only downside for Kevin Hart is that he won’t get as much hosting time as other hosts previous to him. The Hollywood Reporter points out that the Academy has sworn that the show, which usually lasts until the end of tax season, absolutely won’t run over three hours next year. They plan on keeping it tight by announcing the nominees of six to eight categories during commercial breaks, and airing bits of their acceptance speeches through the show.  I guess that’s one way to save time. But I hope that’s all they’re doing. Because if I’m going to watch an Oscars hosted by Kevin Hart, I at least want a 5-minute bit where he and his best social media friend The Rock roast each other up for their respective sizes.
