Pharrell Williams Sent Donald Trump A Cease & Desist For Playing “Happy” At Rallies

I just assumed a rally where Donald Trump was at played the highly overlooked Tiffany Trump single “Like A Bird” to rev up his crowd, but I guess even Trump supporters enjoy a Top 40 hit. Trump for some reason felt it was okay to do one of his rallies after the horrific synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh…and play Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” because of course he did. Pharrell has responded with a legal “GTFO.

The Guardian says “Happy” was played at Trump rally in Indiana just hours after the attack in Pittsburgh. Pharrell’s lawyer Howard King sent a very stern letter to the president to tell him to quit that shit:

“Pharrell has not, and will not, grant you permission to publicly perform or otherwise broadcast or disseminate any of his music. On the day of the mass murder of 11 human beings at the hands of a deranged ‘nationalist’, you played his song Happy to a crowd at a political event in Indiana. There was nothing ‘happy’ about the tragedy inflicted upon our country on Saturday and no permission was granted for your use of this song for this purpose.”

Trump has royally fucked up his handling of the tragedy, including acting pretty flippant and cracking jokes at the rallies that should have been cancelled in the first place. He said he was having a bad hair day, which must be a joke since I assumed they were all bad. I was also a little surprised that he played Pharrell, but it sounds like he has a laundry list of artists he’s pissed off in the past:

“Other musicians who have forbidden Trump to use their music include Adele, Neil Young, the Rolling Stones and Queen. REM’s Michael Stipe said in 2015: ‘Do not use our music or my voice for your moronic charade of a campaign.’”

Ha! I probably would need some emotional Adele music and a red wine to make it through one of those things, but Donald better watch out. At the rate he’s going, the only music option he’ll have left is hiring Scott Baio to sing Mariah Carey covers. Eh, I’d actually probably go see that.
